Not that I'm against them (as long as I can choose to use them or not) but subtitles in Spanish only!

I'm getting hard-of-hearing and rather than turn the volume up too loud, I like subtitles.

I prefer mine though in English and have found a few titles with only Spanish.

I recently purchased I Love Lucy - The Movie and no English subtitles - just Spanish.

Please give us a choice!

I hate it when you're trying to figure out what someone said and theres no subtitles at all. It seems like alot of dvds doesn't even come with them.

One thing you can try is CC. A lot of DVDs have that even if they don't have English sub-titles.

Which can't be passed through a progressive scan DVD player for some reason.

I too rely on subtitles quite often, both for late night viewing and just because I have trouble understanding dialog sometimes.

Maybe we can get up a petition and send to the major studios?

Count me in for a petition to demand ENGLISH subtitles on everything which is released. While most movies are good about this - many TV series don't give a darn about it - one which quickly comes to mind is "The King of Queens".

They can, you just need to run audio cables(red and white) to the TV. If you're running optical to a receiver, the TV never gets the captioning.

Adding subtitles to every episode of a TV show adds substantial expense, kind of like uncompressed sound. Warner actually got rid of all their TV subtitles for a while, and now they are consistent with English subtitles. I assume enough people complained to get them back. I'm definitely a fan for late-night viewing.

I recently bought a movie called Smile Pretty and it just released August 2009. There is no subtitles at all English or Spanish. And the audio is English only, but since its a good movie, it doesnt matter. I have a movie that I bought and on the menu it just says "PLAY MOVIE", It's called 'An American Summer.' I bought an Anna Faris movie called "Lovers Lane" and it just has "Play Movie" "Trailer" and "Contact" on the menu. No Subtitles. This happens with movies sometimes.

Not sure what you mean, unless you're referring to broadcast advertising.

Those all appear to be released by smaller companies (First Look is the only one I've heard of). The majors tend to be more reliable about subtitiling.

On my system, I have to hook the player to the TV using component video (it usually goes HDMI thru the receiver) and then set the player to 480i in order to get the captions. REALLY wish someone would put a built-in closed caption decoder into a good-quality Blu-Ray player (some Blu-Rays actually have standard captions, including 50 First Dates and The Simpsons Movie, but again you can only see them if you play them in 480i).

If you really want captioning technology to advance, get the AARP riled up.

I've complained before about Bluray players not passing CC. That and not having chapter bookmarks. When you upgrade from something like DVD, how do you not take such simple little concepts and port them over?

Well they do, you just have to set them to 480i and hook them up via component (though I'm not sure if all TVs will decode captions through that, otherwise you may have to use standard or S-Video) to see them. It'd be a lot easier if the retards who designed HDMI had taken captions into consideration when they designed the damn thing (they said basically "we didn't know" when this issue came up) or if they had a built-in decoder on every player that could just display them over the picture. Most PC software players can do that, so it probably isn't too difficult.

English is my wife's second language so she sometimes has a problem understanding certain words, especially when accents are very thick,(especially English accents), or if people are talking really fast. We always put on English subtitles if a DVD provides them, and when they don't it it very frustrating. Anchor Bay is notorious for never including subtitles on any of their releases.

I understand when bargain DVDs (think Mill Creek) don't have subtitles; they really need to keep costs down. But when movies and TV seasons from full-price lines fail to include English subtitles (and at least Spanish), that's just inexcusable. This should be a standard feature on any first run DVD.

I also think companies should have at least one person watch the film with subtitles, or have a program for error checking, since I've run across movies where they get screwed up.

Troma is pretty good about messing up subs. You get maybe halfway through a movie and then you start seeing the words along with time stamps. The first Toxic Avenger out of the Tox Box immediately comes to mind.

Add me to that petition as well. I sometimes miss dialog, and sometimes I can't have the dvd up as loud as I would want.
I just started watching Odyssey 5, which doesn't appear to be mixed really well (vocals are low, effects are high) and has no English subtitles - instead it has Portuguese and Japanese. Pardon me for being provincial, but is there really that much of a demand for Japanese subtitles?

I do run optical from my DVD (via component) player to the receiver, and no audio directly to the TV - someone is saying if i run regular red/white audio cables to the TV as well, I'll get captions? The captions are contained in the audio stream?

I also wish Netflix streaming over Xbox would offer captions/subtitles. I think I'd get more out of them than if it offered multichannel sound.

My wife likes it. I wish there were more Japanese subs instead of stuff for Portugal and Thailand.
