Re: Subtitles complaint
I'm with you on that. I have a PS3 and disappointed that there is no subtitles/captions on streaming movie except foreign film. I'm hard of hearings and alway use subtitles/captions on movie I watch on tv. Hopefully, Netflix can find some software that would allow to use them on streamng movie.

Doable but I don't see it happening anytime soon.

Netflix is slowly starting to put captions on their streaming service- a few episodes of "Lost" have it.
It does NOT matter how you have the audio hooked up to get the closed-caption signal from a DVD player or other device- the signal is in the VIDEO. On standard NTSC it was in the vertical interval; I'm not quite sure how they do it on Blu-Ray, I didn't think it would even be possible to put them there but as I've seen on a few titles, it is. (Captions on digital TV broadcasts work differently, which is why TVs have a separate control for analog and digital captions- I haven't seen the digital captions decode anything from a source other than a broadcast; the Blu-Ray captions show up when Analog Captions are turned on.)

Count me in for Japanese.
This is more for Bluray, but you know what I hate? On many Blurays, Japanese subtitle options are HIDDEN! If your BD player language option is set to Japanese, Japanese options appear, but when on any other language option, Japanese is not accessible. Of course it's not listed on the box, and for some reason, many studios want to hide Japanese options from people. It's really bizarre, and I've ONLY seen this for Japanese options.

Re: Subtitles complaint
been watching my Dallas dvds and every season they seem to have different Subs. One will have English, French and Spanish, the next just Spanish and then the next just French. So annoying

Re: Subtitles complaint
I own the oppo 83 blu ray player. one of the great things that they player can do is change the level of the subtitles in the movie or under it. its a very nice feature.

Blu-Rays movies are getting better and better with subtitles or SDH. Sony and its branch (Columbia Pictures, Classic Sony, etc…) have the best SDH out there which shows CC-like – black background with white text.
There are some I Love Lucy DVDs that do not include CC in DVD. A co-worker of mine tried to sell me all her husband’s DVD (he passed away) and I looked at I Love Lucy boxes and it showed no CC or English subtitles. Really, there are several DVDs out there that do not provide any CC or subtitles such as Hell Kitchen (UK version), several documentary shows such as World at War, History Channels, and few others that do not included CC or subtitle. But on TV, they showed CC.
Better to look in the back of the case before you buy it.

Re: Subtitles complaint
I just killed my DVD player, or at least wounded it....
I was having issues with watching a DVD without subs or CCs, and apparently the issue is outputting progressive scan via component.
So I turned off progressive scan on my DVD player. [Panasonic FK65, going via component to my Onkyo HTiB receiver, thence to the TV's AV4 which is 480p/1080i].
So AV4's display was all scrambled. I dug out the DVD player remote [the Harmony is awesome for regular use, but for the setup type things you do once a year, I go to the original], and went to AV3, and connected the SVideo from the DVD player directly to the TV's AV3. Voila, closed captions - and not a bad picture - and I still have multichannel audio through the receiver.
However, for most DVD content, I still plan on using AV4-and when I went back to AV4, the picture is all scrambled, and that's after I turned Progressive via Component back on.
I'm pretty sure this used to work, having both component and Svideo outputting at the same time, unless I misremember. Any suggestions on what to look at first?
