Cold War films count, right? I watched Torn Curtain and Topaz early this morning for the MYOC Challenge, so I'll "cheat" and throw them on the History Challenge list too if they do.

Checklist is up. It's in the second post of the List Thread. You can get there by clicking here and then going to post #2.

So what did everyone choose as their first title?
Unless you count the mini Memorial Day war marathon I did yesterday, I'm starting my Western month by finally watching a few of my John Wayne titles. BD of The Searchers in right now.

I started with "Unforgiven" on Blu-Ray! Gonna mix-n-match for the rest of the day. I'm a big Clint Eastwood fan, so I will try to watch every Western he has done.

I'd planned on something like Quest for Fire but I ended up popping in a cheesy TV movie about the Challenger Space Shuttle. Peter Boyle is running around yelling about O Rings.

Originally I had only planned to watch Westerns, but I went through my (lengthy) Netflix queue and moved a few war and biography films up to watch this month.

I watched The Deer Hunter last night. I had never seen it before, but I knew it had something to do with Vietnam, so I figured Memorial Day would be a good time to watch it.
I'm somewhat embarrassed to admit that I haven't been keeping up on the threads and didn't even know this challenge existed until this morning!
For westerns, I am looking forward to watching The Man With No Name Trilogy on Blu-Ray that I have on pre-order.
The link for the historical movies is amazing! I have quite a few titles that are on that list.
War movies are one genre that I don't pick up very much, but this will be a good opportunity to watch Apocalypse Now again and also check out Band of Brothers for the first time.

But I have a stack of westerns so high I'll probably only watch a third of them at best, really looking forward to my TV time this month, been putting these off way too long. The Searchers was fantastic.

So it looks like I'll be starting with both John Wayne and Jimmy Stewart. For some reason, I have an unwatched copy of The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. I guess I must've watched it on TCM the last time I saw it, because I don't think it's been more than a couple of years since I last watched it.

My goals for this challenge are as follows:
1) Watch many movies from my "unwatched" pile (Braveheart, Platoon, etc)
2) Watch the rest of The Pacific episode on my DVR.
3) Get to many movies that I've never seen (The Deer Hunter, Flags Of Our Fathers, Letters From Iwo Jima, etc).
I just started a new, manual labor job. We shall see if I can keep up or at least stay in the game.

Re: June 2010 History Film Challenge Discussion Thread
Your post prompted me to finalize my goals. I'm ahead this year on my 1 movie per day schedule, but behind in my TV seasons goal, so I'm going to concentrate slightly more on TV sets.
I'm going to try to watch 31 films, and 31 discs of TV seasons.
19 of the 31 TV discs will be the Deadwood set, not sure what the others will be, but maybe I'll start on the Wild Wild West set.

question: would the new Robin Hood count since Ridley Scott placed his story in a historical true time line setting but added the mythical title character?

Oh, that reminds me, I had a financial bomb set aside for the Exploitation Challenge that I never got to. I found a rare bootleg of Inchon with Sir Laurence Olivier as MacArthur. Should be perfect.

Re: June 2010 History Film Challenge Discussion Thread
I think pretty much all the Challenges have counted them. Watching a commentary track takes the same amount of time and effort as watching the film, so should count the same imo. And people who have already seen the film but not the commentary could use this as a good opportunity to learn something, and take part in the Challenge.

Re: June 2010 History Film Challenge Discussion Thread
Go ahead and mark them on your list. It's well established, I think, that everyone wants commentaries on these challenges. Since we're talking about movies like Apocalypse Now, Good the Bad and the Ugly, Gone With The Wind, Lawrence of Arabia, etc., I don't think it really matters about how many films are in the final counts. This is more a fun challenge before Sci Fi and an opportunity to relax and watch some real quality films in some genres that might otherwise get overlooked.

How do Band of Brothers, Generation Kill and John Adams count? Are they considered mini-series so each episode counts as one entry or does it take multiple episodes for one entry? I don't have HBO, so I've never seen any of them, but I own all three and hope to use this challenge to watch all three.
