I have a Joss Whedon shelf that has the Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Serenity and Dr. Horrible dvds and random merchandise on it. I would have Dollhouse if it didn't syphilitic donkey dick.

Everything I have is alphabetical, separated by format: "DVD" , "VHS" (slim), TV Seasons & Multiple-features, and a shelf and a half for the new/unwatched stuff. Not buying any movie in 2010 yet, makes it easy for me to clear that unwatched/new-stuff shelf.

Re: Do you have a favorites shelf?
My shelves are organized by genre (SF, comedy, musicals, etc.) more than anything else, although I do have all my Disney/Pixar stuff together. Nothing's alphabetized, but movie series (Star Trek, etc.) are organized by release.
My biggest problem is where to put movies that are cross-genre.
Nah, not really.

Most of my stuff is alphabetical also, but I do have a shelf of all my slasher films and slasher films are my favorite types of movies so I guess so.

Re: Do you have a favorites shelf?
I have four different bookcases with DVDs on them.
- #1: Alphabetical DVDs, none of which are "favorites".
- #2: My exploitation case, with my favorites displayed. Titles include: Street Law, Heroin Busters, The Big Racket (a Castellari trio), and then a couple other Blue Underground releases.
- #3: My "action" case, with Segal/Van Dame/Schwarzenegger/Stallone favorites displayed. Titles include: Universal Soldier, Above the Law, Total Recall, Running Man, Tango & Cash, Cobra.
- #4: My true "favorites" case, with three different shelves. My "modern" directorial films, including all of the stuff by Tarantino, Coen Brothers, and Cronenberg. Second shelf is De Niro stuff. Third shelf is my criterion/foreign films. Yojimbo, Amores Perros, and some John Woo stuff is displayed.

Yeah, I do the genre thing as well, as best I can. Collection is a bit of mess honestly considering how small it is but re-arranging stuff and then re-arranging the same stuff two days later is kind of part of the fun for me, so I don't worry about it.

I have a separate shelf for my music DVDs. Other than that, I alphabetize my TV and movie DVDs together from A-Z.
On a side note, I treat any title beginning with "The Adventures Of" or "The New Adventures Of" the same as those beginning with "A", "An", and "The". For example, I place "The Adventures Of Buckaroo Banzai" under Bu... and "The New Adventures Of Batman" under Ba... with my other Batman DVDs.
Oh, yeah. I also place "Challenge Of The Superfriends" under Su... with the rest of the Superfriends.

I have a virtual favorites shelf. I've done the thing we can't talk about here to a few dozen of my favorites so I can access them instantly from any of the PCs on my home network.

I didn't used too, but about 6 months ago I moved into a much smaller apartment with a larger amount of people that I had been living in previously which forced me to store about 90% of my collection in the living room. So now I keep all my "prized" DVDs and my favorite movies with the blu-rays in my bedroom.

Re: Do you have a favorites shelf?
nah, no "favorites" section. but not because of any alphabetization.
my collection is arranged rather esoterically. very loosely by genre, but honestly there's no real rhyme or reason to it
i would never be able to pick just a select few films for a "favorites" shelf anyway
