Re: Universal Vault Series (Amazon.com exclusives)

And did you see this disclaimer on Amazon?

This disc is expected to play back in DVD Video \"play only\" devices, and may not play in other DVD devices, including recorders and PC drives.

Re: Universal Vault Series (Amazon.com exclusives)

Just to clarify, the danger in DVD-Rs is not the amount of playback. Like any optical disc format, playback shouldn't effect the disc at all. It's simply that DVD-Rs traditionally don't sport the longevity of replicated (pressed) discs because of the inks used to create them.

To assume that DVD-Rs are of lesser quality without knowing the manufacturer/process, though, isn't really justified. There are companies that make archival-grade DVD-Rs rated to last 100 years (versus the standard 20 or less). I would bet that these archival DVD-Rs give the cheap replicated discs used by Mill Creek a run for their money.

Unfortunately, there's no way to tell until you start to witness artifacting, skipping and other issues. The danger is that sometimes by the time the DVD is breaking down, it'll already be too late to back it up.

Re: Universal Vault Series (Amazon.com exclusives)

I have never had a problem with DVD-R's both studio made or burned otherwise...to worry about something that may happen is just silly. If you like a film enough to want it then buy it if you're just a DVD collecting whore with no real love of the film then don't bother and why are you complaining anyway. I bet the majority of these DVD-r discs will out live you and out live the format. My only beef is the price point...should be no more than $10-12. I mean the glory days of DVD collecting are over, let's all just deal wth it. I would still rather have obscure titles available this way then only streaming or download and have to burn it on my shitty home burner. What the studios have is much better.

IDK, I got Stick and it was pretty good; no pixelation, skips or missing scenes, frames, etc. I might have ordered Blue Collar if I saw it before I ordered but I will wait to see what new titles they will add. They need their own site like Warner though.

Spoken like somebody who hasn't been keeping track of the failure rate of Warner Archive burns. It's not some amazing exception to get a bad disc. No big deal because they'll happily send you a new one...as long as you watch it within 30 days and tell them. If you're one of these guys with a big backlog, that could be a problem. Is anybody really concerned about not watching their pressed discs within 30 days to make sure they got a good one?

With pressed discs, I have no worries. I have played 5000+ discs in my life and have never had a problem.

But if I ever buy any of these burned discs, I will be checking them right away.

I have a question, what do the disc on these pressed disc look like? Do they have any kind of artwork or are they just blank?

I bought Dragnet. I think it had color on the disk itself. But the transfer was just ok.

Re: Universal Vault Series (Amazon.com exclusives)

I've got close to 100 Warner Archive discs. I've found the failure rate to be around 1 in 10. Usually the problem is it won't load at all, so I always check by putting it in the player as soon as I receive it. If I see the menu then I assume it will play. WB has been very good at sending replacements with no hassles, within the stated 30 days. I have a huge backlog, and I have noticed some slight pixelation/freezing on Archive discs when viewing the full movie after the 30 days that I might have tried to return otherwise. This might bump the failure rate to 1 in 5.

Re: Universal Vault Series (Amazon.com exclusives)

I just received my first Universal DVD-R disc (RESURRECTION with Ellen Burstyn). No menu, the movie just starts playing. That's fine. But 16 minutes in, it starts pixelating and soon totally freezes. Not too good a track record so far. I have a bunch of the Warners Archives discs and haven't had a problem with any. The first Universal disc I receive is junk. Maybe that's why there have been no new titles announced yet. I'll ask for a return/replacement just this once and hopefully will get lucky next time. If the replacemnt is crap as well, I'll just get a refund and stick with Warners from now on.

Re: Universal Vault Series (Amazon.com exclusives)

I was thinking about getting some of the Warner titles, but now I'm having second thoughts.

It doesn't make any sense to have this kind of failure rates for burned discs... unless they're using the cheapest DVD-R media that's available.

I've lost track of the number of DVD-R discs (home video and such) I've burned... all without a single failure due to bad media (as far as I could tell). I have had discs not play in an older DVD player but play just fine in a newer one, a BR player, and my PC.

Re: Universal Vault Series (Amazon.com exclusives)

FWIW, regarding burned media and as I mentioned in another thread, I bought five Warner Archive titles during their recent 5 for $55 sale.

I've watched all but one, and so far PQ has been decent. I'm satisfied with them.

It is indeed anamorphic. The two past Amazon "Exclusives" (Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog - when it first came out before it received a wide release, and Jeremiah Season 2), both seemed not be on burned media, however this one is definitely a burned disc. I was unable to play it on my laptop dvdrw, but works on the desktop dvdrw at my work.

Anwyays, it is 1.85:1 anamorphic. Only has Dolby 2.0, no 5.1. Single layer disc. No menu.
DVD Player at home brought up the standard FBI warning, then right into the movie.
No subtitles. VLC shows there are four sets of CC but none seemed to work.

I did notice while playing it in VLC here at work, it was interlaced.

I don't have my old disc anymore, and I honestly don't remember how it looked, but ..it looks pretty good to me..

Some quick shots (sorry if I picked shitty scenes..I just randomly clicked a couple times and took a shot)

ah..well .. i just thought i'd mention it.. i don't know what the reasoning or logic is between the createspace items apparently not being on burned discs .. but whatever.. and to update my previous post..on a bronx tale (on the burned media from amazon) .. it did end up working on my laptop when i ended up finding a firmware update for my drive, so it appears to work (at least in two drives i tried) despite the packaging saying it may not..

Just got the copy of Bronx Tale today. It is indeed interlaced. I'm VERY unhappy with the picture quality. Looks heavily compressed. Looks just like a 700mb avi file.

I'm surprised they didn't do Terror in the Aisles. I thought that had a minor cult following.

Re: Universal Vault Series (Amazon.com exclusives)

Just received news of more releases in the Universal Vault series from the Amazon CreateSpace newsletter today. If this has already been brought up in another thread, my apologies. I think some of these have been out for a few weeks already. At least one (Kid Stays In The Picture) was previously available as a "regular" DVD, so perhaps that's a sign that a lot of previously-available titles will ultimately make their way into services like this?

https://www.createspace.com/Special/...21&utm_id=5756

Encompassing a variety of genres and decades of motion-picture history, the new releases include:

* Bluebeard's Eighth Wife (1938), a classic screwball comedy starring Claudette Colbert and Gary Cooper
* Cool as Ice (1991), starring Vanilla Ice in his motion-picture debut
* Crackers (1984), with Donald Sutherland, Sean Penn, Jack Warden and Christine Baranski
* Here Come the Waves (1944), a musical comedy with the inimitable Bing Crosby and Betty Hutton
* It Ain't Hay (1943), a rare early film from comedy legends Bud Abbott and Lou Costello
* The Kid Stays in the Picture (2002), a documentary following the rise and fall of legendary Hollywood producer Robert Evans
* McHale's Navy (1964), a comedy inspired by the popular TV series with Ernest Borgnine and Tim Conway
* The Other Side of the Mountain (1975), starring Marilyn Hassett and Beau Bridges
* The Other Side of the Mountain Part II (1978), with Marilyn Hassett and continuing the inspirational story of a critically injured world-class skier
* The Public Eye (1992), starring Joe Pesci, Barbara Hershey and Stanley Tucci
* Scott Joplin (1977), with Billy Dee Williams, Art Carney and Clifton Davis
* The Secret War of Harry Frigg (1968), a rare comedy featuring Paul Newman
* Sometimes a Great Notion (1971), Paul Newman's directorial debut, also showcasing Henry Fonda and Lee Remick
* Waikiki Holiday (1937), with Bing Crosby, Bob Burns and Martha Raye
* We're Not Dressing (1934), a classic musical comedy starring Bing Crosby and Carole Lombard along with the incomparable George Burns and Gracie Allen
