DVD = the new VHS
Was there ever a movie released on VHS that had some type of making-of after the credits? I could have sworn some VHS movies had that. |

Re: The Final Destination SD-We get cheated again!!!
hmm. I find this thread fascinating. Blu-ray owners view they are being 'shafted' by not getting the special features ported from the SD versions. Now SD owners seem to have similar feelings about not getting special features ported from the BD versions.
Whenever new technology in introduced, these challenges always crop up. 1) do we limit special stuff only to the new technology, as a 'bonus' for using the new technology and as an incentive to move people off the old? 2) do we ensure both formats have exactly the same content until the old format is officially pronounced 'dead?" If you think about it, if special stuff is only on one format then that involves additional expense to the consumer. If the special is only on SD, then the BD folks will have to buy both the SD and BD disc to get everything. If the special is only on the BD, then the SD folks will have to invest in a BD player to get everything. From my opinion, and that is all that it is folks, is that I think it makes sense to have 'special stuff' only on the new format. otherwise, there is even less incentive for people to invest in the new format. Blu-ray is really a strange beast, imho. The players can play both SD and BD, but it's really not being marketed like this. In reality, there is no reason why all SD players shouldn't be recalled from the stores and only BD players would be available to the public. Seriously - what is the harm in this? You can get BD players as low as $100 now..It IS a new format, and actually I was pleasantly surprised to find out it can play the old format as well. Yet people are still viewing this whole thing as "I just invested $$$ dollars over xxx years for my SD collection - if people think I am going to re-buy/upgrade all of these to BD they are crazy.' Of course, that is not needed. Perhaps the real issue is that despite Blu-ray's success, the studios are still on the fence in this matter. Not sure where to really invest in. So they play both sides, so to speak, but are not even doing this consistently. I speak, btw, as a SD owner who has not invested in Blu-ray yet. (my reason is that my HT equipment is so old that none of has HDMI or even optical connections, so I would have to invest in new projectors, receivers, etc. which I am not ready to do right now. Otherwise, I would have jumped all over this already). But I do understand why studios would put more stuff into BD than SD. And I personally don't feel cheated anymore when special cuts of film were only available on DVD and not VHS. Some may feel that comparison is not valid, but BD is - being marketed at least - as the new technology that -logically - should replace SDs over time. Thank you for listening. |
Re: The Final Destination SD-We get cheated again!!!
I consider myself more pro-SD, if one had to choose, but buy a lot of BD as well. I'm also a bit of a special features junkie.
But I would never expect SD to have the same amount of special features as BD. In fact, even if I was all SD and anti-BD, I would still expect the BD to have more 'stuff'. We all expected DVD to have a lot more content than VHS, and it just seems natural to have the same with BD. |
Re: The Final Destination SD-We get cheated again!!!
Ideally, I think if it's:
1) Technically possible for an extra to function on DVD (obviously, features relying on Blu-ray interactivity would be exempt) 2) That an extra can be included on a disc without compromising the video quality of the main feature 3) And, to be nice to the studio, if it doesn't require an additional expense on their part (another disc or whatever to accommodate a small amount of material) ...then those sorts of extras should be on both the DVD and the BD. "Couldn't make it work" or "Couldn't make it fit" -- I don't have a problem there, but witholding from DVD just for the sake of withholding...? I do think that's annoying. I don't think the VHS analogy really works because VHS is designed for linear play...it's not built to accommodate extras. It's not the DVD isn't capable in a lot of these cases. I do admittedly buy virtually everything on Blu-ray, though. I'd also like for the most recent version of a release to be "definitive" and include as many extras from earlier editions as possible, and I definitely find it frustrating when a Blu-ray release loses extras from the DVD. |

In what way? I understand the arguments for and against DVDs and Blu-Ray discs. What I don't understand is the condescending tone some people adopt during those discussions.
In this particular case, DVD buyers received the film in 2D as well as 3D and got some deleted scenes. It's not like it was barebones, like many Blu-rays that have been released while the SD counterparts are loaded. I think one of the main reasons why many Blu-ray supporters would get so angry that extras were dropped on the Blu-ray is because it's not a good idea to provide less extras to people when you are trying to get them to buy into a new format. Even if it's just a couple of featurettes, like in this case, it makes sense to give a little bit more to the people who are often spending more for the movie and who have invested more money into upgrading their equipment as well. |

exactly! paid 2 bucks to see this drunk at a 2nd-run theater and it was quite possibly the worst thing i've ever seen in a theater. things did look up when we started watching the film as an unintentional comedy though. it amazes me people would run out on release days and buy this for repeated viewing. hell, wait 2 months and get it for $2 at blockbuster if you must. |

Re: The Final Destination SD-We get cheated again!!!
also, the bluray edition includes not only the extras, but the standard dvd as well!! so of you are really that desperate for the extras why not get that
version for just about the same price and should you ever decide to go blu in the distant future you will already own the blu version! |

The only real issue I ever had with blu-ray movies not having the same special features as the dvd is Spider-Man. You have the main company pushing this new technology and then put out an overpriced product that has zero special features on the first two movies. To top it off, a $50 msrp for the third movie? Things like that made me think they were going to kill off the format themselves. Thank god things changed. |
Re: The Final Destination SD-We get cheated again!!!
I think the word "future proof" needs to be retired. It's retarded and makes no sense.

Re: The Final Destination SD-We get cheated again!!!
Blu-ray should always have more extra content than standard DVD. Don't like it, buy a Blu-ray player... No excuses.

And while not every company makes BD players, today, that is true - I suspect most of the major companies have BD players, and smaller ones will follow suit quickly. i think BD is here to stay. I went into Best Buy and was surprised that I had to really look to find the SD movies - there were rows and rows of blu-rays. I really don't understand the resistance from a PLAYER perspective. It can play SD and BD, you can get them for $100. No need to get rid of any of your collection. As I said, if my system wasn't so darn old (and thus expensive to accomodate HDMI/optical technology) I would be all over this already. But the next time I need a player, it definitely will be a BD. It's a shame, really, in my opinion. Moving to Blu-ray should have been the most easy, non-controversial, non-emotional upgrade of technology that I have seen over the last 10 years. Instead, there have been format wars, misunderstanding and resistance. |
Re: The Final Destination SD-We get cheated again!!!
I had thought about returning my unopened SD version to Best Buy and pay (hopefully) the $3 difference between the prices, but since I live about 40 miles from the nearest location, I went ahead and opened The Final Destination 3D.
I couldn't wait to view it! |

Mr. Peepers. I humbly disagree. Panasonic releaded their first portable BD player over a year ago. It's a matter of time until all other companies follow suit. Doubt they are the only ones now. I watch movies on portable players at least 3 times a week. I have a bunch of Blu-ray movies. I'm not some DVD apologist. I'm just someone that thinks removing all DVD players from store shelves now is insane. When prices on BD get lower, great. Now, no. edit: Plus you have to consider laptop and desktop drives. Those prices are still way too high. Eventually prices will lower and things will work out. Forcing it on consumers and talking every company into throwing away a product they make money on is still crazy. |

Re: The Final Destination SD-We get cheated again!!!
I think I understand now why this is the first of the franchise that did not get the same treatment on DVD as the others. Aside from some of the grislier moments, this has the feel of something you would see on Syfy. Just average acting, not particularly epic story, and some of the poorest CGI rendering I've seen in a major motion picture.
Still, it is part of the Final Destination series, which I do love, and we did get that really nice lenticular cover, along with a 3D version and glasses to view it. A decent overall package, and I'm glad to have it. Hopefully, it will be the last, unless someone dreams up a truly fresh idea and executes it with the same intrigue as the original had. --THX |

My exact thought watching the film was "wow where this far into the series at this point huh" watching the truly horrible CGI and incredibly bland acting/story. I also have to say the deaths are not as "interesting" as they have been in the past Spoiler:

Re: The Final Destination SD-We get cheated again!!!
You know what's hilarious about this thread is that I'll bet this same conversation was going on 10 years ago about DVDs over VHS. Everyone will adapt. Technology will always change, there is nothing we can do about it. Blu-Ray is taking over DVD, it's going to happen since everything is going HD now. By the time BD has it's chance something else new will come around and replace it. It will happen.
