I don't lend DVDs or BDs out to anyone, as I have seen how other people take care of things and how careless they are towards stuff....

True story: My wife originally felt different than me towards this subject, and let one of her friends borrow her first couple of seasons of "Sex And The City"....after keeping them way too long (we're talking months here), her friend finally returned them, and the cases were all broken and the discs were visibly scratched and scuffed, FAR from the pristine shape they left in....needless to say, my wife learned her lesson the hard way and now agrees with my philosophy when it comes to lending fragile things!

Luckily, I have not been returned DVDs in that bad condition. I am pretty careful who I lend out to, though, except not in this case, when I should have been.

Anyway, she texted me this morning and told me she found the missing disc. Now how it's held up without a case for weeks should be a different story...

Oh, BTW, I accidentally destroyed your copy of Action Comics #1. I'll give you the $.10 you originally paid for it 70 years ago.


EDIT: Sorry, how rude of me. I just checked dollartimes.com, and due to inflation, that would be equivalent to $1.50 in today's dollars. What kind of a friend would I be if I didn't give you the equivalent of what you paid for it?

It doesn't matter how cheap the set can be had. Replacing something I already paid for because someone else fucked up just doesn't feel right.

Right now I'm missing disc 1 of Veronica Mars that I lent a friend. I could have re-bought the whole season at Target a few weeks ago for $8, but that's still too high for a purchase I shouldn't have to make. I'm not losing sleep over it though, I'll just wait it out until he stumbles onto it in another case of his.

Stop lending this person stuff until she returns the missing disc or buys a new one.

On this point, I agree. However, the OP's point about the drop in price was presented in the context of whether he should ask the bad borrower to replace the disc, or replace his original cost. In that light, he is not taking on any added expense--the guilty party is.

Simple common courtesy. Unfortunately, like common sense, it isnt all that common anymore.

Seems pretty basic to me as well, and something that I learned long ago.

Another thing that I learned way back in kindergarten, was how to share. Each time this topic comes up, I am constantly amazed by the number of people that refuse to let anyone borrow any of their dvds. Maybe they dont have friends or perhaps they have trust issues I dont know. I am pretty anal about my dvds, and I absolutely hate when I get a scratch on any of my discs, But I lend stuff out all the time.

My knee-jerk answer would be that your friend needs to replace the DVD, not pay you it's value from a few years ago. Thus ebay would work and would (should) be cheaper. But of course she found the disk so it's a moot point.

You'd just have to begin collecting something cheaper, like canned goods. Then you could refuse starving orphans entry to the "canned goods room" for fear they might dent your collection of creamed corn. Problem solved!

A similar thing happened to me. I let my friend borrow my Sin City deluxe edition. He ended up stepping on the case and crushing it. He offered me the discs back as they were unharmed. I told him I want the $35 I originally paid for it. He has yet to pay me and this was well over a year ago.

I would be very wary of loaning dvds out. Blu-ray's I wouldnt mind since they don't get scratched the way dvds do. Especially, I would never loan out things that are out of print or expensive or both. Take, for instance, my complete series set of The Beastmaster. They put out the set but then the company lost the rights or just gave them up, so they recalled the set. Fortunately, a few sets got out to Best Buys stores, which is where I found mine. I will never lend that to anyone, because if it got scratched, lost, or broke, the sets are over 100 dollars on ebay. I only payed 37 dollars. My brother often lets his movies lay around, sometimes not always in the cases. So, he can't borrow anything of mine.

I don't lend anything to anyone. IT's mainly because I have a bit of OCD and can't stand seeing an empty space in my organized shelves, but also because no matter how nice your friedns are, most of them don't give a shit about your property because it's not theirs.
