Re: How Many Unwatched DVD's do you own?
I have over 700 dvds, and probably only watched 20% of em. I love being buried in content. A lot of my stuff is tv shows which takes a long time to finish. Some examples:
Cheers S4-11
Star Trek Voyager S1-S7
Complete Andy Griffith
Mash Martinis Collection
Stargate S1-S11
The Wire S1-S5
NCIS S1-S6
24 S1-S7
King of Queens S1-S9
Plus all the Perry Mason, Gunsmoke, and Rawhide seasons.
So far this year, I managed to complete all seasons of The Shield, Lost and most of Prison Break.

I don't think I can count that high... I'm terrible! I'd say probably more than half of my DVD's are still sealed, especially TV series. I am good about watching TV series that I've never seen but always wanted to, but when I buy a show that I've already seen on TV, I never seem to watch them. I probably shouldn't buy them then. I've stopped buying The Office because of this, and really shouldn't buy The Simpsons, but those become SOOO cheap eventually that I cave...

Those of with more than 5 or so, or if you want to track them, please step this way to the unwatched movie pile thread...
http://forum.dvdtalk.com/dvd-talk/56...mber-09-a.html
Those threads help me a lot. Of course, I had Friday night to myself, so what do I do - instead of watching something off the unwatched list, I watched something I have watched before-Starship Troopers. I was just in the mood for it.

To answer the original question, 298 unwatched movies out of 1175 total. About 25% of my collection.

Hundreds of them. However, I carefully research each title before I buy it so none are truly blind buys.
Why acquire so many when I haven’t watched the ones I have? Simple. I think we’re heading towards the end of physical media releases. Many of the titles that I really want to have are obscure films from the thirties and forties, particularly classic comedies. I’ve been buying like crazy to stay ahead of the OOP curve and it’s amazing how many titles have gone away already. I seriously doubt that many of them will ever make it to BR or any other physical format. If they are ever released again, it will likely be in the form of over-priced, under-featured burn-on-demand titles. More likely, I think the future of media is a DRM-crippled, semi-“ownership” pay-per-view type system. While there may be an increasingly limited window in which to buy those titles before they go out of print, I have years and decades ahead to enjoy them at my leisure.

As for the question of the thread, it looks like I have 489 unwatched titles with 70 of those being multi episode TV sets. Of the rest, I'd say at least 50 of those are Bd's/HD DVDs. Between all the sales in the last few weeks, I've added about another 40 titles.
Even at the rate of watching 1 new thing a night, it would still take more than a year and a half to get through my unwatched pile- and that rate is way beyond what I'm capable of. I'm only averaging about 4 or 5 movies a week, and there are quite a few I would like to re-watch at the moment.

Re: How Many Unwatched DVD's do you own?
Well, due to a huge splurge at big lots, combined with tons of box sets for holidays, plus the occassional "what? You mean this is only ....? Grab!" I have about 70.
And it finally happened. Guess it was meant to be. Some of these unwatched stuff is over a year old. Just too much to go through, and I tend to watch things based on my mood, not when I bought it.
Just finished getting through the 23rd disc of the Get Smart time life series. (which I think i got from buy.com?). Anyway, disc 24 were the last 7 episodes of season 5 (disc 25 was a supplement disc).
And - there was no disc 24. I had two disc 25s! I checked. Yup. same content on both!
I doubt I could find the receipt if I had to, and it probably is past any warranty period anyhow.
Who knows what other problems lurk in my unwatched pile? Missing discs? Discs that won't play?
actually, considering how long it takes me to go through this stuff, I feel blessed that I have only had one dupe disc - and that was for the weakest episodes of the weakest season.. And I found the supplement discs sometimes to be more entertaining than the episodes themselves. And I bought the entire set for under $60.. can't really complain. Unless I ever want to sell it..
there is a risk in waiting too long to check things out...
Thanks for listening..

^ I've mentioned this before in the forum, but it may be of benefit to you.
Several years ago, I received the first season of The Andy Griffith Show as a Christmas gift. Didn't get around to watching it until months later and noticed the same problem you described--multiples of one of the discs, while missing another.
Knowing it would be nearly impossible to resolve this at a local store with an outdated receipt (which I didn't have, but could have spent time trying to track down), I contacted the makers of the set. I left a phone message or two that wasn't returned and then wrote a letter describing my problem which included pictures of the multiple discs. A short time later a package was left on my doorstep containing a brand new set to replace the defective one. No note was enclosed or request to send in the incorrect set. Needless to say, I was happy.

Re: How Many Unwatched DVD's do you own?
Many of us have bigger viewing appetites than there are hours in the day.
And we have to work fulltime to pay for these collections. Which means that the time we need to watch the DVDs we acquire is spent actually working to pay for them. If we had enough time to watch all this stuff, it means we wouldn't be working, which means we wouldn't have the money and, hence, we wouldn't have the collections. In that case, of course, we'd just Netflix everything or go to the public library and borrow DVDs. Which begs the question of why I don't do that in the first place. Well, because 90% of what I buy happens to be R2 or R3 DVDs and are not available from Netflix nor are they found at the local library.

Right on Ash!
I have great love flim and tv and that the main reason I buy (when there is a sale) and if don't watch them right away I will someday.
I have over 100 or more unwatched dvd's but I have so much going on these last few years it makes hard to catch-up on those titles.
I have more than one hobby (30 years of collecting sports cards, sports jerseys and alot of misc..)

Right now only about 20...that is probably the closest I have been to "caught up" in two years.
Amazing how many movies one can watch when home sick with the flu for almost two weeks.

i have around 130 unwatched, but i like having access to the films when i feel like watching them, so that number will continue to grow, as i average way to many DVDs a month. but like what was previously stated the kind of DVDs i mostly buy are kung fu, horror, film noir, and asian cinema - there is not a good chance some of these titles will be issued on blu-ray BUT there is a good chance they will go out of print.

In a thread like this somewhere, someone came up with a response I will never forget, and which I couldn't help flashing on as I was driving home from Barnes and Nobel the other night-
It's not so much that I'm buying all these movies as that I think I'm buying the extra time to watch all these movies.

Probably more than I want to admit. But for actual movies probably less than 100 of the 1300 I own. For my complete dvd/blu collection including tv seasons, wrestling etc probably around 300.

I've been trying to buy less, and have been working hard to watch my unwatched films, but still own perhaps 1,000 unwatched films.
I have a goal of one unwatched film per day (which I've averaged for over a year and a half now) , so if I get my blind buying under control maybe I'll "catch up" in four or five years.

Also, when I make trips to Chinatown to buy new Asian DVDs, I often over-buy because I never know how long particular titles will be available. Things go out of print so fast. When the Shaw Bros. R3 DVDs from Celestial were coming out, I bought every martial arts one. Now when I go to those stores, I pick up some of the non-action Shaw titles, e.g. the Chinese opera ones or the musicals and comedies. Plus things I originally got on VCD just to sample and now want to upgrade to DVD. Once those disappear, you'll never find them again. E.g. I bought TEMPTRESS OF A THOUSAND FACES on VCD (I believe that was the only format they sold it on) and then it disappeared for all time. Great movie, BTW.
And sometimes the U.S. releases of Shaw titles represent considerable upgrades from the Celestial releases (usually in the sound mix) or have special features I want. So I get those as well.
Now Fortune Star is releasing its Legendary Collection titles of Golden Harvest titles from the 1970s, many of which have either never been available or only been available in in poor-quality English dubs (e.g. WHEN TAEKWONDO STRIKES, aka STING OF THE DRAGON MASTERS) or bootlegs (BEACH OF THE WAR GODS). So, being an Angela Mao fan, I buy up every title of hers that comes out, plus anything with Jimmy Wang Yu, Cheng Pei Pei and Nora Miao. So the unwatched pile keeps growing.
If my obsessions were more mainstream and easily satisfied by rentals, I wouldn't have this problem. But they're not.
