It's simple really. It keeps up demand.

I understand it's "supposed" to keep up demand for the cartoons.

What I don't understand is why they would rather throw away sales for the sake of "keeping up demand".

If I were to look for "The Complete Goofy" I'd have to drop $100+ to buy it from a 2nd hand seller, or pirate the discs. In both cases Disney gets zip because they "wanted to keep up demand".

Actually, I just joined the Movie Club and I feel stiffed by that. I wanted some of their exclusives like "A Mom for Christmas" and figured I'd get in and get out. I need to buy four more DVDs for 19.99 each and I figure no problem. After making my picks I go to my cart and see that everything was discounted an additional $5, making them 14.99 instead and not counting toward my membership requirement. The more I looked for altnernate titles the more frustrated I got. The choices are slim in what counts in fulfilling the agreement. What a rip.

And it is annoying to pay $75 to be a member in D23 just to buy stuff. I hate all this exclusive stuff, but it's all marketing.

And that proves that demand is kept up there. If people don't want to pay high prices due to the high demand of a title being in the vault, they'd be smart to buy it during the time it's out since things only come out once in a while.

The other option for your complete goofy is to wait many years for it to be released again. Supply and demand at it's finest.

I believe there is an option to take off the discount so they will count toward fulfillment. You might look in the Disney thread in the Clubs Forum.

Re: Walt Disney Treasures - 54-Disc Premium Collection

I have 14 of the older tins and was thinking about selling them on Ebay but most of the titles aren't selling for very much. Most go for between $10-$30 with Goofy being the most expensive starting at $50. I also checked Amazon and they have a lot of the titles available for relatively low prices as well.

With anything that sells for insane prices on Ebay and Amazon.com, if somebody is patient enough they can find a good copy for sale for a reasonable price. Sometimes it takes a while to wait, but if somebody checks the sale listings regularly they may be surprised.

I can go and get Looney Tunes collections whenever I please, and some of those contain some really classic stuff, and I cherish those just as much as my Disney Tins.

The quality of the cartoons should be the indicator of the demand, not 2nd hand prices, and certainly not when Disney says the DVD should be "available".

This thing looks absolutely phenomenal if you haven't bought a whole bunch up to this point.

I'm debating on it. I just wish Costco would do what they did in the past and package the sets together, minus the tins, into a box set. They did it once and I figured they'd do it again.

Re: Walt Disney Treasures - 54-Disc Premium Collection

I've been collecting these things from the beginning and managed to find them all at retail (or less), with the exception of CHRONOLOGICAL DONALD, VOL 3. Never saw it in any store, nor was it available through the DMC. I refuse to pay $100 for this one item from a scalper on ebay. This has left such a sour taste in my mouth and almost makes me want to stop purchasing them. Why would that one set be produced less than any of the others? Heck, I still see some of the sets that are way older than that one in Costco, Best Buy, etc. Really makes me mad!!

BTW.. if anyone on the boards here could help me out with that set, feel free to drop me a PM!!

Re: Walt Disney Treasures - 54-Disc Premium Collection

If you look at Amazon.com Marketplace and take a glance at the prices of "new" sets of these then the price through the 23 club is pretty good, even including the $75 membership fee. I mean, I could never rationalize getting this set, but if there is even a minor craving in you to own it then here is a list of what these sets would cost "new" from Amazon.com Marketplace. Only thing you'd be missing is those tin cases, which look like hell anyway after a few years in a humid climate.

Done. I couldn't help myself, and had to buy it. Will be putting the 6 treasures I do have on Ebay. Those who are interested in this be warned though, you must pay California sales tax (10%) on both the membership AND the treasures set, plus shipping charges. It comes out to almost a $100.00 extra bucks. Will make my wife give it to me for a birthday/holiday gift. Have to justify it somehow! I can't wait to get this thing!!

If something popular is OOP for 5 years and then re-released with a lot of hype, they probably sell more in the first week of the re-release than they would've over the 5 years it was OOP.

That is very flawed thinking. Everything would be OOP if they followed your business example. What Disney has been doing is affecting them more than us. They clearly don't understand the simple laws of supply and demand and one of the reasons piracy exist is because Disney is not supplying enough for the constant demand in many of their products, including films. These moratorium bullshit is costing them millions.

To one degree or another, they all do it. Stuff that's new at some point stops being produced and what's left over is it. If it's popular it goes away and then there's high prices, if it's not or they just produced more than was needed, it sits on shelves or in a warehouse for an online store.

"one of the reasons piracy exist is because Disney is not supplying enough for the constant demand in many of their products, including films. These moratorium bullshit is costing them millions." is wrong, IMO for a couple reasons.

The first is that anyone that bought a bootleg version because they didn't want to buy a legit version, which isn't hard to do in the first place, are going to buy the film when it comes out again just to replace the bootleg.

Second, them causing piracy by putting stuff in the vault makes no sense. By that logic, all the films that could be readily bought at a store now wouldn't have bootlegs being sold, which is not the case at all.

Both products, whether they're available in the stores or stuck in a vault have bootlegs being sold all over.

In fact by putting stuff in the vault, and announcing it ahead of time, like with 101 Dalmatians, is going to push the people, like me, that didn't buy it when it first came out to track it down before it disappears simply because if they/I decide I want it later, I won't be able to find it.

I live in Florida and had to pay the California sales tax, so it looks like it doesn't matter where you live: Oregon, Florida, or Anywhere U.S.A., 10% sales tax for this item. Pretty weird.

I did it just now and didn't have to pay sales tax.

My mistake guys. I just called Disney and I was looking at the shipping charges to Florida which are about $50.00 which is about 10%. I was charged Florida sales tax at 7.5% so it does matter which state you're in after all.

There was an ad on the site saying shipping was only $5 if you used the code SHIPTODAY

Re: Walt Disney Treasures - 54-Disc Premium Collection

Well, CRAP, I even talked myself into it. Ordered it yesterday --- and Thank you very much for the SHIPTODAY discount code - that saved me a quick $70.00. So, the final price was $74.99 for D23 Charter Membership, $499.99 for the DVD Set and $4.95 for shipping for a TOTAL PRICE of $579.93. I was going to have it shipped directly here to Japan, but that was a whopping $199.99, so I had it shipped to a friend in Oregon and he will ship it on to me for a heck of a lot less than $199.99. And, of course there was no sales tax seeing as the selling point was Oregon.

On a side note - has anybody else who lives abroad noticed that many stores are really ripping us off on international shipping these days? The prices they charge are not even in the same ballpark as what the actual charges are! Maybe I should start a rant in one of the forums, but which one?

Re: Walt Disney Treasures - 54-Disc Premium Collection

This thread reminded me that I really should be picking these old animation tins up. I had only bought Oswald and Donald vol. 3 new previously (as I felt the release of Oswald was pretty huge). I picked up a mint Mickey Mouse in B&W vol. 2 a near-mint Mickey Mouse in Color vol. 1, both for $19.99 at the used DVD store. I'll probably pick one or two up per paycheck (or as I locate the few really hard to find ones I want).
