Has anyone lost the "thrill" of collecting?

For about 6 years, I had been collecting DVDs. I had quite a lot and was running out of room. It seemed (as many people here) the collecting part was more important than watching the movies. There are only so many movies that I like enough and will watch over and over, and I really only have an attention span to watch TV shows on DVD. Anyways, I started to sell mine off...and eventually got to the point where I sold almost everything. I don't have a desire to go blu or even start collecting again...has this happened to anyone else? Maybe it is just this economy, where I realize I am sitting on a lot of money with some of the DVDs I had. IT also seemed that many times when I felt like watching something, I couldn't even find anything in my library that I ever felt like watching, I guess you always want to watch what you don't have, ha.

Re: Has anyone lost the "thrill" of collecting?

Yeah the tactics smajor studios have been pulling have seriously diminished my enthusiasm for collecting DVD's
Some studios still know how to take care of their customers for the most part, Weinstein Co. , Sony PIctures Classics, etc. and I appreciate them for it but most of the big ones like WB pull some repugnant shit with the Blu-ray exclusives and whatnot.

Re: Has anyone lost the "thrill" of collecting?

Naahh...I haven't lost the thrill, as it was always about the movies and the extra features that showed the behind the scenes stuff that made me love the medium. Still love a well made DVD, and I'm glad that I own what I do (about 1500 DVD's). Steelbooks have become a passion for the movies that I love (I won't chase packaging for the sake of it), and make for a very cool display item, as I've stored about 1100 or so of the regular amaray cases, and just kept the discs stored in some larger CD/DVD carrying cases.

Short answer, I was all about collecting movies not DVD's and I don't think that will stop anytime soon.

Yep not because of studios and whatnot but lack of films that I want to see this year

I don't collect, never have, I love film & still do. Blu-Ray has completely rejuvenated my buying habits & have made watching films I love more fun than ever.

Have I lost the "thrill" of collecting? No,
Have I slowed down my collecting? You bet. I still look forward to Tuesdays. some more than others. Havent gone Blue yet, although I do own a couple Blue rays.
Used to be, every tuesday I would get a stack of dvds. Now I hardly buy more than 1 at a time.

Unfortunately no. I love watching movies and TV shows and will continue to buy them.

Re: Has anyone lost the "thrill" of collecting?

I still get excited when a new TV season comes out on DVD/Blu-Ray, since I don't watch any during their run on cable. I no longer blind buy movies, so I know what i'm getting myself into these days.

Between the lack of extras, boring packaging, and the fact that almost every back catalog movie is already out on DVD, the thrill is kinda gone, but I still love movies/tv shows.

It's not like your sitting on a gold mine with your DVD's and TV on DVD.

Re: Has anyone lost the "thrill" of collecting?

I wouldn't say the thrill is gone. Last month I spent way too much money on on stuff I had been holding off on for the right price. Thanks to the Criterion 50% off and AnimEigo $13/live action sales I decided to bite the bullet and fill in some of my collection holes. I was thrilled to finally have done it.

Tuesdays, unlike for many here on this site, have never been a concern with me. My tastes don't lie within the next biggest blockbuster releases or getting smaller releases immediately. That has improved over time however. I'm more about establishing "must owns" for my collection, how to get them for the best price and finally filling those holes. It's still fun to do. And for the non-essentials I just use Netflix now. So the disappointment of bad buying decisions has been minimized.

But I still enjoy walking down the aisles at the local Newbury Comics, Best Buy, Target, Walmart bins ..etc. just to see what's been released or what is on sale. But it's gone from blindly collecting films to collecting ideas - just window shopping.

Re: Has anyone lost the "thrill" of collecting?

Sort of. I really don't buy hardly anything these days. I got a PS3 about a year ago, but I'm really limiting myself to re-buying just my all-time favorites on Blu-ray. With the PS3, the only DVDs I buy anymore are TV shows. But I've also started selling off movies in my collection that I haven't had the urge to watch in several years. Over the past 5 years, I've gone from a collection of almost 700 to just over 400.

Re: Has anyone lost the "thrill" of collecting?

The thrill is still there (I got the chills when my F for Fake and Simon of the Desert Criterions arrived the other day), but space and economic issues have slowed my buying. Someone mentioned here that every catalog title is on DVD, but there are still thousands of films that have never made it to the format. My love of movies will never fade, so I will still be buying them or watching them until I drop dead.

Re: Has anyone lost the "thrill" of collecting?

I ended up selling the majority of my collection. I really only keep the stuff that I really love. I had way too many movies and tv shows that are okay to check on when I catch them on cable, but I will never pull them out on dvd to watch. I hurt my back and was laid up for nearly two weeks and went through my collection and watched a lot of stuff and realized I really didn't need to have so much crap in my collection.

Re: Has anyone lost the "thrill" of collecting?

When I was in my teens and early twenties, I got a little carried away with my VHS collection of a sbout 300 titles.

With DVD I decided to only buy the titles I really liked. It's too easy to get caught up in buying what's new, rather than what's good.

I found I had bought a lot of excellent, award-winning films but they weren't necessarily titles I want to watch over and over.

With DVD being so cheap it's also difficult to not get carried away.

I know there are some collectors who have 3000 different titles. I don't know about you, but I don't think I'll have 6000 spare hours in my lifetime to watch them!

I suppose the same can be said for a book collection. You're never going to really read any of them again but it's nice knowing you have them.

Re: Has anyone lost the "thrill" of collecting?

For me, the thrill is finding deals, rare-ish versions, and the "right" version for a good price. I rarely buy on Tuesdays, though I did pick up Watchmen DC on its release day.

It's more fun for me to blind buy something that interests me at $2, or finding a fairly-priced rare-ish movie that I don't own, like La Femme Nikita for $17.

I like being able to watch whatever I want to watch when I watch, without some advertiser forcing me to watch an advertisment for something I have absolutely no interest in watching, and without some newscaster telling me the woes of the world when I leave the real world behind after finishing my supper.

Re: Has anyone lost the "thrill" of collecting?

I lost the thrill years ago. DVD was ridiculously exciting to me when I was in middle school/high school when I got my first player. The big thing for me was waiting for my catalog titles hitting it for the first time. I remember when Special Editions used to mean something, and I'd just be jazzed just to get some of my obscure 80s favorites to be in their OAR.

Then multiple releases of the same film started coming out, other priorities took place, and meh. I haven't collected in years. I've picked up titles here and there but I haven't bought a DVD day-and-date since Simpsons Season 11 last Fall. I'm just not in to it anymore.

Re: Has anyone lost the "thrill" of collecting?

I've lost the thrill, over the last year or so. I don't know why, I guess because my attitudes have changed towards special features and stuff. I've been collecting for 10 years now, and when I first started all the behind the scenes stuff was awesome, now I don't watch special features anymore, and that is what excited me about collecting.

I agree. The older films whose special edition I was interested in have already been released with the exception of a couple of titles (Halloween II, The Road Warrior to name a couple).

There really isn't much our there to buy except new release titles whose extras I really don't have much interest in. I don't really need to see a "making-of" doc about how they used CGI effects.

Blu-ray isn't offering anything that the DVD hasn't already done.

Re: Has anyone lost the "thrill" of collecting?

I just started collecting recelty so reading all these comments was sort of helpful
*do not buy stupid crap just because it's cheap*
well, i've been buying criterions mostly and don't have huge collection yet
around 200ish I think. (only around 20ish criterions so far tho)

thrill is there for me, since I'm new.. i'm out looking for bargain dvds, especially
the ones I always wanted or would like to have.
oddly,, out of all my 200ish dvds/blurays I don't have some of the must have or
really popular titles..(ex. starwars.. ) I have one harry potter dvd but my mom
bought that not me.. Lord of the rings could use an update but waiting on
bluray.. (HURRRY THE HELL UP PETER JACKSON)

it's great when i'm hunting for some titles and find good bargain for it..
I live in Canada and dvds are alot more expensive here than U.S..

Re: Has anyone lost the "thrill" of collecting?

The Lord of the Rings (Theatrical Cuts) don't hit until this November.

As for the question posed in this thread: No. I am not sick of collecting, and there is still a thrill to it. Granted, I no longer get the same kind of thrill in blind buying stuff since a decent amount of what I purchased that way was crap. Since I love films, and live for them, I doubt I will ever truly tire of collecting though since it's about building a library to reflect my passion and love for cinema - it is not about owning lots of DVD's, or reaching top numbers or having something impressive to show off to others, etc. - it's all about having the right titles in my collection because I need them to be there. Because I love them, and will cherish them. Any true film lover will understand what I mean by saying that.

I still buy whatever I like to watch repeatedly.

The thrill is in viewing films, not plastic cases on shelves

Re: Has anyone lost the "thrill" of collecting?

I haven't lost the thrill of being a collector in general, but I have for the most part for DVDs. It started with becoming a student again and having an extremely limited source of funds. Then I started to get a few things here and there, and realized that my attention span much like yours rarely had the patience for a two-hour film. I slowly admitted to myself that my passion and love for movies and television in general have gone much to the wayside. But my love for music has gained much ground, and my collecting tendencies gained strength in the area of CDs. In fact, even though I'm better left just dropping the DVD collecting rather than trading it up for another hobby, I'm pondering starting to collect vinyl. If that ever starts, I'm sure I'll be quite the poor and manic man.
