ME! ME! ME!
The studios have murdered this hobby for me. I love movies and all the extras, but studios are so damn awful about taking care of their base that I have basically stopped buying DVDs. All of this effort they put forth to get people to re-buy movies they already have is ridiculous.
Plus I used to justify buying DVDs instead of renting because it cost $5 to rent a DVD back in the day. Today I go to Redbox and rent it for a buck.

I love them, and will always collect them. I have I don't know how many thousands now, and there isn't anything that I don't have that I want. But I work at home, and all I do is watch dvds. I'd like to have a library of all of the greatest films ever made, and the time to study and enjoy them.
I am disappointed that the new releases have slowed to a crawl though. I used to see 8 or 9 new things each week that I wanted to add. Now I'm lucky if it's one. But we've got The African Queen on the near horizon, and the promise of The Magnificent Ambersons soon, so I'm here for the duration!

For me, it's always been more about building a library of film specific to my tastes - and while that may be similar to collecting, it's different enough where it has less to do about he acquisition of the discs and more to do with the content of the the discs.
And while I don't buy nearly as much as I used to, it's still fun, as my love for movies has not abated since I started my "library" more than 10 years ago.

I just got married/moving in with my wife as well. But she knew going into it to NEVER even think of telling me what to do with my movies. That would have been a deal breaker right there. We got a 2 bedroom condo. So to make me and her happy I converted the spare bedroom into my movie library. So now if she doesn't want to look at my movies all she has to do it shut a door. I've also explained her that when we are ready for a kid we need to move into a 3 bedroom house. There is no way the kid is getting my movie room.

My wife and I have a smal one bedroom apartment and we really don't have any room for my thousands of DVDs, but she knows that it is my passion, (second to her of course), and hobby so she tolerates it. I promised her that when we have the money to move into a bigger place, we will convert one room into my library so they will be out of the way and she will not have to look at them.
I still haven't lost the thrill of collecting because there is always something interesting or obscure that is released that gets me excited (ie:The Columbia Film Noir, William Castle, New Hollywood & Toho sets, Criterion titles, etc.).

Re: Has anyone lost the "thrill" of collecting?
For about 6 years, I had been collecting DVDs. I had quite a lot and was running out of room. It seemed (as many people here) the collecting part was more important than watching the movies. There are only so many movies that I like enough and will watch over and over, and I really only have an attention span to watch TV shows on DVD. Anyways, I started to sell mine off...and eventually got to the point where I sold almost everything. I don't have a desire to go blu or even start collecting again...has this happened to anyone else? Maybe it is just this economy, where I realize I am sitting on a lot of money with some of the DVDs I had. IT also seemed that many times when I felt like watching something, I couldn't even find anything in my library that I ever felt like watching, I guess you always want to watch what you don't have, ha.
Now I rent everything and see it before I buy. I also no longer buy DVD's regardless of the price. I only buy Blu-ray and only collectable films.

Being a movie lover I'll never stop adding to my collection.
I do think that I've gotten away from upgrading discs that I already own with rare exceptions, things like the Godfather Trilogy, for example - I watched Parts I and II over the last few days and it certainly had me pining for the remasters! My son is watching the last release of "Hoosiers" as I type this; discs like that make me happy that I do still enjoy the thrill of adding to the archives

I'm not as obsessesed with the hobby as once before. I see $$$ when I look at my collection these days. Find an OOP title, flip it on Ebay. This helps support my addiction to cheap movies($2) at the pawn shop. So rather then spending $15.99 for the new release I just wait a few months and get it for $2.
So to answer you question, the thrill of the FIND is still there by I am not obssessed with collecting. In fact my collection has dropped in size considerably. Now my CDs on the other hand.............................................
Oh, and Blu-Ray can kiss my....well. I'm not buying that format. I know NO ONE who has that format. I'll stick with DVDs. OF course that won;t stop them from pimping everytime I throw in a DVD.

I don't think I've lost the "thrill", but certainly don't have the $$ to spend as I used to.
All the gimmicky marketing the studios and retailers are doing bothers me a lot at the moment.

Nope, haven't lost the "thrill" of collecting. But then again I collect the content not the packaging. My collection is essentially "complete". There's nothing on my wishlist that is currently available. Just a handful (TV shows) that are yet-to-be released (bootlegs or legits).
I'm simply enjoying my collection at this stage.
