They must have heard I just got the R2 version from Amazon.co.uk a few months ago. Still haven't watched it. Fortunately, it was cheap with a favorable exchange rate. I don't think I'll double-dip unless this has some really good extras.

Jokes about the designer being kicked in the balls aside, at least it sorta matches the lettering for the Anchor Bay releases.

While I'm happy the dvd is being released and will buy it. I definitely would say the cover is still no match for the theatrical poster art which is awesome.

Agreed, cover art is awful but I will definitely be picking this up as it was the movie that got me in to the Phantasm series to begin with.

Oh definitely, this was one of my Top 5 most wanted on dvd, and I couldn't be more happy that it's finally getting released (as I stated in the other thread )

Even if the poster is better, am I the only one who feels like they purposefully designed it to match the look of the Anchor Bay DVDs?

I don't care if it doesn't have extras, unremastered sound or (supposedly) ame cover art. Being on DVD in R1 at all is better than nothing.

I agree with you about it looking like the AB releases. I like it and applaud Universal's effort here. However, I am a little bummed about the lack of extras but am glad that I can FINALLY complete my collection.

I picked up a bootleg copy of the movie about 4 or so years ago, and even that has slightly more special features than this looks to have. It's a 2 disc set - disc 1 is the feature film in Anamorphic Widescreen, Dolby 2.0 and has the theatrical trailer and photo gallery of poster art and such. Disc 2 is an uncut "work print" of the film. Also, the cover art matches the original movie poster art. I paid less than $20 with shipping for it then, but, I'll still pick this up in a heartbeat now that it's finally getting a legit R1 release.

I'm just surprised Anchor Bay isn't putting it out. I thought one of the hold-ups was that they were waiting to acquire the R1 rights to release it?

It could be a misprint, since the film was released theatrically in stereo(as well as on VHS and laserdisc). However mono audio itself, if that is the original mix of an album or movie is not 'bad' at all and can sound excellent in my opinion.

Even though I already have the R2 sphere set, I'll likely pick this up because R1 DVDs always look/sound better.

Ahh, the hand.

A three-foot-wide cardboard version of that hand has been perched atop a shelf here (and in previous homes) for the better part of 20 years now (sitting the other way around, it looks like it's casting an evil spell over my place). I was lucky (or perhaps stupid) enough to get dibs on the original theater standee from this film back in 1988 due to a relative being a projectionist at the various local theatres in my old home city. Damned thing had to nine feet tall, because it fit snug from floor to ceiling once I got it in the house and reassembled (what a chore that was!). The hand, the ball, and blades and the drill bit (and possibly Angus Scrimm) were all die-cut pieces that produced a cool 3-D diorama effect. I never planned on keeping it for long, and once the conversation-piece novelty wore off, I got rid of most of it, except the ball, its components and the hand. Today, all that remains is the hand. What was I thinking . . .

Back on topic, I also have the R2 Sphere set, which has excellent extras for PHANTASM II, so this new R1 version is a no go. Like that old standee, though, I kept the ball and blades of the R2 set and threw away all the cardboard!
