I always thought sunrise on the 1st of where ever you happen to be should be the cut-off.

Re: Summer Sci-Fi Challenge 09 - Discussion Thread

The challenge has been a good excuse to finally watch my copy of The Prisoner. I'd only seen the first episode before, and while I enjoyed that and had heard good things about the series I'm still finding it to be much better than I expected.

for the most part, MST3K's 'Manhunt in Space' was a hideous painful movie, but the homosexual innuendos were soooooo hilarious.

I've seen like 2 episodes and really enjoyed them. Have considered buying the complete set each time I see a sale, but have held off so far.
I loved it, but it's almost a guilty pleasure. There are some good thinkers and some heart fealt episodes, but mostly it's just fun light sci-fi. The final 2 seasons are OK, but it's more like a different show at that point. I'm not a huge Atlantis fan, it gave me my Stargate fix, but like SG-1, the longer these shows go on, the more things start to make less sense.

You just watched that also? That one started out decent but didn't take long to go downhill. I finished the box sets I have and moved onto watching all the ones I haven't seen at random.

I liked it when they referenced the speaking short during Earth vs the Spider towards the end when they were yelling.

Can I get a ruling on The Animatrix? Count as 1 movie or as 90 minutes of shorts?

I don't see the difference. Doesn't 90 minutes of shorts count as one movie anyway? Well, 92 minutes, technically. According to the rules on the first page, 23 minutes of shorts counts as one 30-minute show, and four 30-minute shows count as one movie.

I hope I'm understanding that correctly, since that's the way I did it the other day when I watched a bunch of Superman cartoons.

Re: Summer Sci-Fi Challenge 09 - Discussion Thread

I already made my personal goal of 31 a few days ago, but I'm going to make a last ditch effort to try and see a few more things tonight. Even though I made my personal goal I'm a bit disappointed that I didn't find the time to watch more movies for the challenge, but instead watched tons of TV. Oh well, there's always next year. I've still had fun doing this so I'll definitely participate again.

Good job, it took me a last minute viewing of E.T. tonight to reach my conservative goal of 19. I really wish I had demolished my goal though

Exactly, either way it counts as 1.

And if anyone watches a bunch of cartoon shorts, you can just sum up the title and not name every single one. Watch 23 minutes or so of Superman cartoons and just call it Superman cartoons or something unless you really want to do them separately.

I missed a few days of viewing and am not even going to catch up to my number for last year. I also have a 30 minute show in my tv temp area I'm not going to be able to do anything with.

We can start discussions for next year now if anyone wants to. I'd really like some ideas on guidelines for determining what is and isn't sci-fi unless the imdb, allmovie and voting the other stuff works for people, which I think does.

I also don't care about fantasy and I'm tossing it to the side because I'm a big jerk and there's enough sci-fi stuff to watch for this challenge. If enough people want it, we can run a fantasy challenge at the same time but I'll be surprised if it's popular enough. So if you want fantasy in some form, speak now with your ideas.

first challenge for me, and a bit disappointing as i might barely break the "one-a-day" mark of 31 for the entire month. shoot i thought i might get close to 50! i guess its harder than it looks and i salute everyone who made the effort!

on a side note, i didnt miss gabbo, did i?

Thanks Mister Peepers for another successful Sci-Fi challenge.

I ended up at 82 after going out of town the last week of the month.

I managed to hit both of my goals: finish Stargate commentaries and surpass last year's mark. Good challenge everyone!

Thanks Mister Peepers, great Challenge!

Even though I quit watching with 10+ days to go, I had tons of fun, and made most of my goals.

Thanks to all of you for the recommendations, answers to my queries, nice lists, and good discussion this last month.

Re: Summer Sci-Fi Challenge 09 - Discussion Thread

I finished at a fairly pathetic 48. I had planned to get through Stargate SG-1 again, but I just couldn't get into it. At least I got to all my Blade Runner cuts.

Thanks for running this, Mister Peeps!

Re: Summer Sci-Fi Challenge 09 - Discussion Thread

Well, that's it for me! It's a nice excuse to work through unwatched movies. I tried a bunch of Netflix "Watch Instantly" movies, since I figured out how to stream them to my HDTV through my PS3. It's kind of silly (or rather, I'm sure its all about who pays them) that the PS3 doesn't do it naturally, forcing 3rd party developers to come up with stuff.

I should enjoy my movie watching time while it lasts, because this Fall is going to be very bad for me work-wise. Especially October

Re: Summer Sci-Fi Challenge 09 - Discussion Thread

Thanks for running this challenge, Mister Peepers.

I discovered it was definitely a challenge to break the century mark on this contest although I really enjoyed it. TV shows made up the vast majority of my viewing and next year I plan to watch more movies. I had to watch BSG because due to my work schedule I was never able to see any of the season 4 episodes when they aired; the season 4.5 BD is on its way to me now. I can hardly wait; can't believe I've managed to avoid spoilers all this time. I'll probably end up buying the whole thing on Blu eventually. I was barely able to resist the price on DD for the sale.

Done, with a whopping 17. I was hoping to get through all my Twilight Zone sets, but I only got through season one and part of two before other things ate my leisure time.

Thanks Mister Peepers. I was pleasantly surprised to hit over the 100 mark. It helped having a week off work though!

Re: Summer Sci-Fi Challenge 09 - Discussion Thread

I put off watching "Eagle Eye" (saved on my DVR) because I didn't want it to take time away from building my sci-fi count. And I finally get around to watching it and ... duh, it's a sci-fi movie. I don't remember any of the ads mentioning that.
