Haven't found any specs yet for that particular release though.

yes, there's an actual print ad in said issue of Rue Morgue - although I'd wait to hear if any supplements appear on the Dimensions release of the film before buying the Canadian edition.

I'm assuming that's for the U.S release?

Curious to see how the Canadian disc stacks up. Mostly because I'd like to get this film next week as opposed to next month :)

Porting this over from the international forum for those that are interested:

Canadian dvd:
5.1 French Audio, 2.0 French Audio
English Subtitles
1.85:1 Anamorphic Widescreen
Extras: 3 French Trailers...that's it, not a thing more

Image, sound, and subtitles seem fine, just disappointed that the hour and a half documentary isn't on here.

Heads up for anyone wanting to get this for cheap. Wherehouse.com has it for $13.99, but if you use the code WHBIGAPRIL you can get it for $11.19 w/free shipping. I wasn't charged tax either (maybe bc I paid w/credit??). The coupon expires on Thursday so hopefully you guys see this before then.

Side note...Johnny Got His Gun (review) is the same price and releases the same day. Both for $22.38

Word of warning if you plan on subscribing to RM. The mags are often late and sometimes you get double issues. That doesn't sound like a bad thing, but unless you email them and inform them the double issue counts towards your subscription. Other than that it sure beats going to the store and trying to find it. Great mag.
Any word if the Uk Blu ray is region free?

the UK BR will most likely be region B coded - but don't quote me on that.

That sounds crappy.

I was thinking about subscribing to their magazine, but my local Borders gets their issues on time.

Has anybody seen Laugier's first film "Saint Ange"? If so, how was it?

One of the best parts of this DVD release, is the director's intro to the film. He films it in front of his DVD collection, I think it's the first time I've ever seen anyone's DVD collection on a DVD before. It's a nice set up.

Watched it too long ago to offer any detailed thoughts. From what I can recall, I found it satisfying enough, maybe nothing special but still a decent viewing. If you can accept it for what it is, more a low-key ghost story as opposed to action/horror and gore, you should be okay. I'd likely grade it a little higher than the generally unimpressive reception it received from critics and audiences. Actually, SAINT ANGE isn't too far a reach from a film that arrived later yet received much greater fanfare and acclaim - THE ORPHANAGE.

Re: Martyrs (R1)---04/28/09

but the film merged alot of subgenres into one: ghost, torture porn, revenge, and well... I'm not giving away the ending. It's nowhere as gory as say 'Inside' which is more of a roller coaster of film, but Martyrs really was a movie that sets itself apart from other 'horror' films.

i wonder, how are the subtitles? Because i know for "Inside", they used dubtitles, and since its the same company releasing it

subtitles didn't match the dubbing at all. seemed geuine, but how come the dubbing isn't close to the subtitles? why can't the dubbing correspond to the English subtitles for the French track? wouldn't that be easier and make more sense? i dunno...

anyway, what the hell was this movie about? didn't hate it and was transfixed. had not idea where it was going and not sure i knew where it went ultimately. thought it would be much simpler story, but it was dense and otherwordly which i'm not that big on, but i didn't hate it at all and so which the BBV copy which listed the 1-hour making of on case had it. featureless of course. i heard the making-of explained more which i would have loved.

I don't know if anyone here visits Twitch from time to time, but they posted an excellent link to the artists that did this film's soundtrack (Seppuku Paradigm). They are apparently offering it for free download for anyone that's interested.

Here's the direct link:

Just finished it and I LOVED it! as far as insight
Spoiler:
I believe what the ppl wanted was to find out what happened after death. So the tortured victims were just part of an experiment.

Hope that helped.

Spoiler:
and Anna saw what it was like and explained it to Madamouiselle. Mdm was going to explain it to everyone, but then she thought that the vision would probably be different for everyone and thus that wouldn't be hers or the rest of the groups because of what they have done.

so she was so striken with the horrors of her/their acts she killed herself and would probably have been damned to hell?

maybe?

Well, here's what I got from that...

Spoiler:
I think that Mademouiselle found what Anna said to be so incredible that she chose to kill herself at that very moment because she needed to experience true death to attain what they were searching for. Being selfish, she decided to not share it with the rest of the group.

My take on it was
Spoiler:
Anna was wanting that type of reaction (suicide) so she told her whatever would influence her to take that action...at that point the only possible way for her to get revenge

After watching Martyrs, is anyone surprised that Laugier is remaking Hellraiser? It seems like Hellraiser has been very influential to him, so it looks to be a perfect fit.

BTW...did anyone else pre-order this through Wherehouse.com? I placed my order 4/18 and still haven't gotten it yet.

that is a very good take. didn't even think of the
Spoiler:
last revenge angle
that could have been Anna's very motivation.

it does seem a very good fit. almost too good, meaning the comparisons now that i think about it are indeed very similar. but, if he makes it similar i am not sure it would find a mainstream audience. i know true horror fans should definitely make "Martyrs" a must, but if the same vein is sought for HR, he might polarize its existing fanbase and leave them with WTF? thoughts. i am not a fan of the original anyway, so given my enjoyment for "Martyrs" i would have renewed interest in the "Hellraiser" hopefully reinvention because of Laugier.

wow! Cameron's review is up http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/37123/martyrs-unrated/ and while i respect the review i just think he missed the point.

this is a movie that stays with you as it has me since watching it over the weekend. it festers and gets under the skin and is so much more than your Saws or Hostels.

yes, there are two parts, but they are equally compelling when you stop and realize what the 1st shock half has to do with the 2nd. just missed the point of the movie i think, but no disrespect.

it is and will be a very ploarizing movie and easy to understand how you can not like a movie like this. and i do agree that the use of the definition of "martyr" wasn't anything beguiling to me.
