Looks like Canada will be getting Martyrs a month before the States.

Mostly because I'd like to get this film next week as opposed to next month :) |
Re: Martyrs (R1)---04/28/09
^ yes, the specs are for the US release.

Re: Martyrs (R1)---04/28/09
Porting this over from the international forum for those that are interested:
Canadian dvd: 5.1 French Audio, 2.0 French Audio English Subtitles 1.85:1 Anamorphic Widescreen Extras: 3 French Trailers...that's it, not a thing more Image, sound, and subtitles seem fine, just disappointed that the hour and a half documentary isn't on here. |
Re: Martyrs (R1)---04/28/09
Heads up for anyone wanting to get this for cheap. Wherehouse.com has it for $13.99, but if you use the code WHBIGAPRIL you can get it for $11.19 w/free shipping. I wasn't charged tax either (maybe bc I paid w/credit??). The coupon expires on Thursday so hopefully you guys see this before then.
Side note...Johnny Got His Gun (review) is the same price and releases the same day. Both for $22.38 |
Re: Martyrs (R1)---04/28/09
Word of warning if you plan on subscribing to RM. The mags are often late and sometimes you get double issues. That doesn't sound like a bad thing, but unless you email them and inform them the double issue counts towards your subscription. Other than that it sure beats going to the store and trying to find it. Great mag.
Any word if the Uk Blu ray is region free? |

I was thinking about subscribing to their magazine, but my local Borders gets their issues on time. |

Re: Martyrs (R1)---04/28/09
Has anybody seen Laugier's first film "Saint Ange"? If so, how was it?
|
Re: Martyrs (R1)---04/28/09
One of the best parts of this DVD release, is the director's intro to the film. He films it in front of his DVD collection, I think it's the first time I've ever seen anyone's DVD collection on a DVD before. It's a nice set up.

Re: Martyrs (R1)---04/28/09
but the film merged alot of subgenres into one: ghost, torture porn, revenge, and well... I'm not giving away the ending. It's nowhere as gory as say 'Inside' which is more of a roller coaster of film, but Martyrs really was a movie that sets itself apart from other 'horror' films.

Re: Martyrs (R1)---04/28/09
i wonder, how are the subtitles? Because i know for "Inside", they used dubtitles, and since its the same company releasing it

anyway, what the hell was this movie about? didn't hate it and was transfixed. had not idea where it was going and not sure i knew where it went ultimately. thought it would be much simpler story, but it was dense and otherwordly which i'm not that big on, but i didn't hate it at all and so which the BBV copy which listed the 1-hour making of on case had it. featureless of course. i heard the making-of explained more which i would have loved. |
Re: Martyrs (R1)---04/28/09
I don't know if anyone here visits Twitch from time to time, but they posted an excellent link to the artists that did this film's soundtrack (Seppuku Paradigm). They are apparently offering it for free download for anyone that's interested.
Here's the direct link: http://seppukuparadigm.com/martyrs/index.html |

Re: Martyrs (R1)---04/28/09
My take on it was
Spoiler:
After watching Martyrs, is anyone surprised that Laugier is remaking Hellraiser? It seems like Hellraiser has been very influential to him, so it looks to be a perfect fit. BTW...did anyone else pre-order this through Wherehouse.com? I placed my order 4/18 and still haven't gotten it yet. |

Re: Martyrs (R1)---04/28/09
wow! Cameron's review is up http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/37123/martyrs-unrated/ and while i respect the review i just think he missed the point.
this is a movie that stays with you as it has me since watching it over the weekend. it festers and gets under the skin and is so much more than your Saws or Hostels. yes, there are two parts, but they are equally compelling when you stop and realize what the 1st shock half has to do with the 2nd. just missed the point of the movie i think, but no disrespect. it is and will be a very ploarizing movie and easy to understand how you can not like a movie like this. and i do agree that the use of the definition of "martyr" wasn't anything beguiling to me. |
