They've already been mentioned, but Dexter's Lab and NYPD Blue are my picks.

This is an excerpt from the webpage below: "One of the tragedies of ridiculous music licensing practices has been that TV shows that involved great music can no longer be seen -- because when they were first aired, there was no aftermarket, and so no rights were cleared with the music owners. Clearing all that music for a DVD release is apparently too difficult, leading to an overall loss to society and culture." Read more here: http://techdirt.com/articles/20090117/0537253446.shtml |

Re: Most successful tv show to be shunned on DVD?
For unreleased shows, definitely Wonder Years. I hope the music rights can be straightened out. Miami Vice probably used the most music in it's episodes and they were able to get those out.
As far as discontinuing seasons, King of The Hill stopping at Season 6 of 12 is a sin. |

Just the same ones others have mentioned. The Wonder Years, Batman, Family Matters.
FM surprises me; I could have sworn that WB was planning on releasing Season 1 along with Perfect Strangers. We got PS, but no FM... |

Yeah, thirtysomething is what immediately came to mind for me, too.
I've never seen a single episode of the series before and I'm really curious to check it out so I've been waiting. I remember my mother watching it years ago when I was too younger to "get it" and since we have more or less the same taste, I'm curious to see it, especially after all these years. |
Re: Most successful tv show to be shunned on DVD?
It's gotta be The Wonder Years. I've been waiting for years for a complete series release.

Really.... with all the crap that they put out on dvd, you'd think a full release of one of the best tv shows ever would be a no brainer. |
Re: Most successful tv show to be shunned on DVD?
I'd like to watch Unhappily Ever After again.

Re: Most successful tv show to be shunned on DVD?
Wasn't there talk of Bionic Woman coming out when the remake was airing? Or was that just smoke. Obviously that would have been a prime window of opportunity.
And I echo the question of L.A. Law since I wouldn't think there'd be music rights involved. |
Re: Most successful tv show to be shunned on DVD?
The reasons for The Six Million Dollar Man And The Bionic Woman DvD is 2.
1: Dimension Films owns the rights to BIONIC in general! 2: Universal Pictures owns the footage of the shows. and whole alot money is holding up the DvD's ever coming out in USA. |

Re: Most successful tv show to be shunned on DVD?
"Thirtysomething" and "The Bionic Woman" were the two that came to mind immediately.
I have heard that the music rights for "Thirtysomething" will cost MGM a fortune...hey, if they can release all the seasons of "Moonlighting", they can certainly release "Thirtysomething" - the known reason for "Moonlighting" taking so long was the music rights as well. Thanks for the heads up on "The Bionic Woman". It always seems to be Universal is the culprit with such things...just loved that show when i was a little kid (along with "Six Million Dollar Man"). A third one is "A Year in the Life" from NBC in the early 90's or late 80's...it even won best Drama at the Emmy's it's first year on the air, but it never found an audience. Sarah Jessica Parker was in it, and that girl who was the lead in "Can't Buy Me Love" opposite Patrick Dempsey was also in it...I had a super old VHS of one of the episodes that won't track on any VCR anymore...how did we ever put up with video tapes back in the day?? |
