For those interested, I have been slowly compiling a list of exploitation films available for various studios. I can post that list on one of those Goggle spreadsheets and we can all contribute. If you would like to of course.

Believe it or not...no it is. A simple search through the review database, did the trick. I mean there are plenty I don't know, but I got a shit ton in the sheet now.

Also of note, that some of the films on the list currently don't fit the exploitation genre. What I did was this...I grabbed all the films listed in the review DB here at DVD Talk and added them in the sheet. Gradually, I was cutting them down (in another sheet), but that became difficult since the definition seems to varied. So at the present moment, I left all the films in there.

I also haven't gone through the major studios (Sony, MGM, Fox...and such) yet, hopefully other members can help me at there.

Well you can basically go through Blue Underground's entire catalog and add it. Almost everything they've released is some form of exploitation.

There's also Mondo Macabro. Not really grindhouse, but more foreign exploitation. I've only seen a small handful, but it was damn entertaining stuff.

They probably figured it would be good to unload the remaining stock of the Kung Fu Theater set (which came out in 2007) bundled with their newer Rarescope 10-pack.

I do recall CHINESE HERCULES being the only Widescreen title in the KFT portion of the Best Buy set, at least according to the back of the box. I'd imagine the Rarescopes are presented in various ratios.

Thanks, Brian. I just saw it at the local Best Buy. They had quite a few copies. The cover is really similar to the link you posted. I also saw the individual Flicks with Kicks and Rarescope sets there.

The FLICKS WITH KICKS set is comprised of Rarescope features previously released as individual discs. All the extras, if available, were ported over. I'm hoping they did the same with this latest 10-pack. The KFT set indeed seems like a cagey way to get rid of leftovers by bundling it with the new Rarescope set.

I just picked up Legends Of: KUNG FU - 10 movies for 9.99 at my local exchange. I feel like I got ripped off because I just saw you can purchase it for 7-8 dollars on Amazon brand new. Sigh....

Does anyone have this set? Is it a keeper for having payed 10 bucks?

I don't have that set, but I have ten similar packs from the same series and period- "The Dead Walk", "Ancient Evil", "What It Is, What It Was", "Tales Of Terror" and so on. The print quality on these is always mixed and almost always full frame, but if you go in just intent on just watching the films as films, to say you saw them, you should have some fun. Brentwood released quite a few of these 10-movie sets several years ago, then a few 20-movie sets before BCI became the brand name and they went legit, more or less, leaving future 50-movie, 100-movie and 250 movie packs to companies like Treeline and Mill Creek. Interestingly, I recently picked up 8 of the Mill Creek 50-movie packs in the Deep Discount BOGO after calculating that there was very little overlap with the older Brentwood sets. That's a lot of public domain grindhouse goodness!

Just watched Blood Of The Dragon.... Amazing!!! Why am I just getting around to watching these type of movies? The music,dialogue and action is brilliant even compared to today's movies...

Can you recommend any of the 20. 50. 100. 250 movie sets?

First up below are the Brentwood 10 Packs I've picked up (and after a fair bit of research on each). Some might still be available first-run, though I suspect some might be OOP by now. Prices have never really shot up as far as I know, so they should be pretty cheap to score through Amazon Marketplace. These all have that same "10 Movies" badge that's on your Kung Fu set:



WHAT IT IS, WHAT IT WAS (great Blaxploitation collection with gems like Velvet Smooth, The Black Gestapo, The Black Six and at least THREE Fred Williamson movies)
THE DEAD WALK (horror from the mid 30's to the early 60's; plus an episode of "The Veil" with each film )
ATTACK OF THE MONSTERS (mostly Corman and Corman-style 50's sci-fi cheapies; some real gems)
TEN NIGHTS OF TERROR (horror, mostly 60's/70's U.S. & Euro, one TV movie, plus a print of Herk Harvey's Carnival of Souls that I'm certain is lifted directly from the Criterion disc!)
FRIGHT NIGHT (nice companion to the above; more U.S. & Euro stuff from the 70's, with a couple from the 60's, including Kill Baby Kill. Also includes Pieces, though I'm sure the new Special Edition is much better)
TALES OF TERROR (60's to 80's horror, again a mix of U.S. and Euro)
THE FINAL FRONTIER (selection of sci-fi cheapies from the early 50's, and the early 60's, mostly U.S., but one from Japan, Warning From Space)
ANCIENT EVIL (horrors with supernatural or psycho bents, like Horror Express, The Sadist [another great print], The Killing Kind, etc.. I seem to recall this one also has a couple of late-era regional video cheapies in the mix, but not certain. I do recall they were laughably bad, thus watchable)
DEADTIME STORIES (More Euro and U.S. horror, mostly 70's, but also includes the legendarily strange and stupid Night Train to Terror, which is almost worth the price of the set in itself )

SPACE QUEST (very good cross-section of indie and no-budget sci fi, mostly from the late 60's to late 80's, including some Italian imports like War of the Planets.

This 4-pack from Alpha is quite nice, as it includes a longer version of THE MANSTER that I've found nowhere else:

(this looks to be in a cardboard slipsleeve. The one I got came in a faux leather hardbox that Alpha was using to bundle various slimcase discs into a few years ago, and which was only $10 compared to this newer set. Weird)


Got these Mill Creek 50 Packs during the recent BOGO at Deep Discount. Had to do a fair bit of cross-referencing with the above sets, but discovered remarkably little duplication, as I mentioned. The deal worked out to about $8.29 per 50-movie set, and DD usually runs it more than once a year. Nice.

There will be those who gripe about the quality of the film prints and transfers in these sets, and basically, they're right! But part of the joy of these collections is that the prints are pretty much in the condition they were in when they were playing the grindhouse circuit, so while Tarantino and Rodriguez spent millions "scratching up" their movies and "dropping" reels here and there, the prints in these boxes give you the effect for less than one dollar per. Not bad. Sure, some of the titles have been revisited by better labels in more respectful special editions (like Pieces, Carnival of Souls, The Night Evelyn Came Out of the Grave, etc.), and those are always worth getting, but many of these films will never get such treatment, even if they deserve it, and sets like these will probably remain the only way to see them for all time as there's just not enough interest in restoring them (in part due to the availability of these sets and the sometimes supposedly "fuzzy" copyright issues that these companies took advantage of.

I'm sure someday we'll see Blu-ray sets of these with the same dodgy image quality, only with 10 or 20 movies on one disc. That'd be cool, too.
