Re: Billboard 2008 Top DVD Sales

Thank you very much for this info!
I was trying to find this out on their website but they wanted me to sign up and pay. I glad to see THE GODFATHER reissue didn't sell on dvd. MAybe studios will stop all this double dipping.

I'm not a subscriber, either. This chart data is currently available for free. Also, remember that The Godfather restoration DVDs came out in late September. Very few of the top 40 titles came out as late as they did. While we're at it, the re-releases weren't quite a double dip, as they really did take great pains to boost the quality of the transfers for that release. I would say a true double-dip would be the Star Wars DVDs, where the same nine discs keep getting circulated.

Re: Billboard 2008 Top DVD Sales

I own 16 of the 40, all of which I purchased on HD DVD or Blu-ray.

And I've watched 5 of those since purchasing them.

Um... Jeez.

Re: Billboard 2008 Top DVD Sales

Although moderately interesting, I'm not exactly sure what use this list has. Since very few DVDs that came out toward the end of the year are on here, it is really not a list of "movies released in 2008 that were the most popular," which I think would be a more interesting list. Given this format, it seems likely that Batman The Dark Knight will be #1 next year, but it's not even mentioned on this list.

Bolding is mine. That was the big glaring omission that I saw on this list. This is due to a late release, obviously. Thats why I don't put much credence in lists like that, for that reason. Some surprises on this list though. I would have thought Transformers would be much higher, and I am Legend would be lower. Of the 40 listed, I own 14 and have bought 17. I am would like to see sales data for the first week of release of these dvd's. Wonder what a top 40 list of just first week sales would be like.

That would be something that would have more meaning imo. I'd like to see it too. Some of these were out most of the year and didn't Transforms come out in '07? I Am Legend was out in Feb. of 08. So those dvds have had months to sell. But first week sales would be an indication I would like to see, as you said.

Of the list, I own 17.

I suppose that I should be proud that I don't own every single disc on that list. I own 12 of them.

Obviously this list has no credibility as reflecting full 2008 numbers. That means it has no credibility at all.

I own 14 of those. Glad to see 3:10 to Yuma ranked, if only to say the Western genre is still kicking somewhat.

I guarantee you the Dark Knight sold more last year then the Kingdom. The whole list is invalid if it is supposed to be for the whole year.

Traditionally fall releases sell more the following year than the year released. This goes back decades with album releases. Some of the biggest selling albums of all time, released in the fall were the top sellers the following year. Same with top 40 singles. A new single released in Nov. would start at the bottom and move up, making the top ten or #1 in jan. and ruling the charts for jan. and feb. Titanic hit theaters on Christmas '97. Did it make more in just that one week than a summer blockbuster that had been out for months?
The Dark Knight will continue to sell steadily day after day through '09 and likely sell way more this year than it did between release day and 12/31.
