Goes naturally for me since I collect different stuff (books, CDs, comics etc.) and I've an avid movie lover since I was kid .

I do it somewhat naturally having come from a long line of pack rats... er, collectors.

My DVD collecting pretty much mirrors why I collect records and CDs. Once I discovered the joy of owning your own music rather than be a slave to the radio I started to collect records and moved to CDs when they took over. Like music, I collect DVDs so that I can watch what I want, when I want, without the interruptions of commercials or the annoyance of rude movie "patrons".

They are just such a small purchase that you never really think how much a DVD or two a week that you will probably watch once. I have at least gotten away from buying most new release DVDs (Dark Knight being my lone purchase on release date last year) but still buy many DVDs.

A $5 DVD a week still equals almost $300 a year with tax. And of course I rarely stick to $5 a week on DVDs.

I don't drink or smoke so that frees up even more money to spend.

My family wasn't too fond of the whores and blow ... this is a hobby that everybody can enjoy.

Mostly because I'm too lazy to go to the rental store or too moody for Netflix. I mean with respect to the latter, who the hell knows if a film you rented 3-4 days ago will fit the bill by the time it arrives!

I used to dig Gutwrencher's responses to threads such as this, but since his input has disappeared ..... simply, I enjoy having a library of films within walking distance, period. With over 800 DVDs or so I only consider myself a casual movie fan (as strange as that may be to say), but I enjoy experiencing them with others as well as the fact that it's become an outlet in life. It's really my only hobby so I have accepted the expense of it.

Why do you know this, because $.39/day can save some child in Africa or something? I never get that mentality. If you can't afford clothes for work, or food for you or any family, then really ..... there's no need for justification.

I collect dvds because that way Ive always got the movies available in case I feel like watching a certain one. I also collect them b/c I like the idea of being able to display my collection as it might look at a video store.

That always was a problem! Especially before I invented the wheel!!

I enjoy movies, so I collect them. Same thing with video games, and in the past with baseball cards, comics, etc.
I went through a phase a few years ago where I bought pretty much any and every DVD I could, just to build up a huge collection. Not to mention I had to have the "Special" Edition of everything - I would buy dog turds if they came in shiny holographic packaging. Talk about a waste of money.
I eventually wised up and sold off the majority of my collection.
Now I only buy movies that I enjoy watching, and know I will watch them more than once. I also buy the standard edition of everything unless I get a good deal on a "Special" edition, considering I generally don't watch through all the features anyway.

For the love of film. There are some movies out there that have never been in the movies, but you blind buy and come up with a gem. Movies are an escape. To be able to watch a movie when you want from your own collection.

Agreed. Other than being just a movie dork, it's nice that I have the films around whenever I want to watch them.

We all are tempted by ... stuff. I've never considered my DVDs a collection though. To me, collecting is something tangible and has rarity. Like coins or old movie posters. This is the digital world where having a bunch of zeros and ones on a silver platter (even in a tin case) is just ... stuff. Eventually my film library will just be on a hard disc (or the like) like my music now is.
