In regards to the music, I always thought the violins at the beginning of the whole chase scene (that arial shot with the convoy and helicopter) always reminds me of that scene in Heat with the arial shot when the camera goes down to the precious metals heist.

I never thought about that until you said, but now that you mention it I can definitely see some similarities.

Yeah, that was my first thought when I saw the movie.

Nolan has said many times that Heat was a huge inspiration for TDK, so I wouldn't be at all surprised if it's purposefully referential.

The thing is I love that scene in Heat, so I'm happy with it!

they did this on one of the A&E or one of those channels specials. the villians of Batman and Hamill had a nice inclusion.

Yeah, the DVD transfer was pretty bad. I was a little shocked by how much artifacts I saw. I'd expect that kind of treatment on something like Fred Clause, but TDK? What a shame.

The 1-disc version duplicates the first disc from the 2-disc version. Sorry, but there aren't any "better" copies out there than the rest, they are all the same.

The black levels look too compressed. There isn't enough shadow detail. Dark scenes appear muddy and blotchy, dark objects disappear against dark backgrounds. It's a mess. It appeared as badly on Pay-Per-View.

I was watching the Special Edition of Batman Returns and impressed how much better the picture looked.

It's gotta be the t.v. that has something to do with it.
Like DARK KNIGHT looks as good as any average movie on my t.v., but the new DIRTY HARRY boxset didn't look all that good to me. With colors looking too bright in some scenes. But everybody here said it looks great and better than the 1st boxset. Not to me.

I think you have to be a real expert on video quality to notice. When everyone started talking about how awful the quality was, I really thought it was going to look barely a step above VHS, but since I know so little about artifacting, shadowing, etc., I really didn't notice anything, and thought the movie looked fine. Perhaps if I watched it side-by-side with the blu-ray, I'd notice better.

agreed. i mean, i can certainly see the difference when comparing it to the blu-ray, but i thought it looked fine and completely watchable on my player.

Two featurettes--one just of Hans Zimmer letting us know how hard he worked to create the greatest score of all time--are about all there is. The six "Gotham News" segments were interesting, though hardly required viewing. Otherwise, all we got were the IMAX-shot scenes isolated in their OAR (you know, because we all have IMAX screens at home to really appreciate this), three trailers and production stills. What, were they afraid filmographies would overwhelm us?

Actually, I *can* recall the next most disappointing DVD release I've bought--the 2-disc "Casino Royale." I suppose I'll eventually bite and pay to upgrade to the 3-disc of that, and unfortunately, I'll do the same for "The Dark Knight" and Warner Bros. knows it.
Agree 100% The bonus material on the 2-disc set is so disappointing. I really want to see a long extensive documentary on the making of the movie from pre-production to post-production and they failed to include that here. At least Batman Begins had a somewhat decent 25 minute+ documentary.

I put the DVD in my HDTV (52 inch Sony Bravia) and was SO MAD at all the shimmering and artifacts all over my screen. And the extras were worthless. Lame.

This could probably be answered if I just read through the thread, but I was wondering something...

I wanted to get the most closely related DVD in regards to content to the blu-ray, I got the normal 2 disc SE, no gimmics, no batpod, etc.

I know Target has that Unmasked show on a bonus disc, but I have already seen it.

So did I do just that? Did I get the dvd version that closely resembles the blu-ray, minus the Target version?

what are you asking exactly? if you don't like the exclusives and don't have Blu, then the 2-disc is the only version you can get and no there are more/different extras on the Blu. the 2-discs are all the same and liek you said Target has the extra disc.

That is the 2 disc SE is as close as I can get to the blu-ray, minus the Target edition (since I have seen what was on the bonus dvd on tv already)...

no other SD version (sans Target) has added content. Blu-ray has more features.

I watch my copy again last night, and it's fine. Std DVD, blown up with a projector to 110" and I didn't see any flaws. Not looking for them either, nor am I blind. I see all kinds of crap on other films, but The Dark Knight is clean and a pleasure to view and is entertaining.
