I just found this one. It's open source and runs on windows/mac/linux. It fetches info from over 30 sources.

I just tried out DVD Count, so here's my 2 cents on it.

I only have about 350 titles, none of which are rare, foreign or obscure titles. It didn't pull in about 40 of them (using my csv file from DVD Spot). I thought that percentage was extremely high for what I would consider a mainstream collection. It would have been a nice feature for it to list the titles of the ones it didn't pull in instead of giving the generic title not found message. Not sure that I'll continue to use Count as I wasn't that impressed with it overall.

What I miss most about DVDSpot is being able to search for a DVD, and literally finding a list of every single edition of that DVD that has been released, from the most common to the most rare limited edition. I know DVDCompare is similar, but nowhere near as thorough or complete as the DVDSpot database was.

Now, I have become a more hesitant DVD buyer because it's harder to find out for certain if the edition I'm buying is the absolute best one or the one I want most.

I tried uploading the DVDSpot File to D-V-D-Count and out of around 500 DVDs...it added NONE. It said none of them were in their database...did I do something wrong? I didn't expect some of the exclusives to be in there, but it didn't even import the most basic of titles.

EDIT #1:I have my collection in an Excel file and there it shall stay until the day DVDSpot or something of equal or greater value comes along.

EDIT #2: So I didn't realize exactly what Google Documents is until I saw someone (I think it was Trevor) post about it a few pages back. I looked into it and have decided that I am going to abandon DVD Aficionado in favour of hosting my Collection (DVD, Blu-ray, CD) on Excel/Google. So thanks Trevor (or if it wasn't Trevor then whomever it was).

I like what I see from the screenshots, but...

I tried for an hour to install this thing on Mac OS X. Yikes! You have to download a third party ports program, string together a bunch of command line entries, and run an install script. I could not get it to work. I followed the instructions on the GC Star page, as well as their forums and still could not make it work. Very frustrating. Would it kill just to have an install package like every other program?! I would like to try it out but I guess either my system or myself is too deficient.

I remember you from dvdspot. By the time it shut down, I was so proud that I had probably 10 contributions (1 was rejected ) but I recall there were people like you who made thousands, or tens of thousands. I even linked to your list as a friend (or "buddy" I don't remember) because I often went there to look up Asian movies I planned to buy. What happened just plain sucks, but I do want to thank you for keeping dvdspot going for the time it was running.

I appreciate the kind words. Hopefully some of the other editors from DVDSpot who are also members here will also read your post (and my original post) and see how appreciated they were, b/c there were others who did a lot more than me, especially in the last 6-8 months.

Welcome to the linux side of Mac

Here's something that I've built with a couple buddies of mine. I posted about it a while back and now we're ready to open it up to more people.

It lets you organize and show off your collection of DVDs, books, CDs, and video games all in one place. It's free, easy, entirely web based (nothing to install), and you can import your old DVD Spot collection with little more than a click. We also built in functionality to make buying and selling items from your collection WAY easier than it ever has been before. More features are in the works and we're very open feedback and suggestions. We just want to build a great, useful, and beautiful site that everyone can use.

At first glance I like the "coverflow" L&F of that. On second glance I see a lot of Floyd and Waters solo work in your collection so I like your style.

The glyde site looks great and I submitted my request. If you don't mind, can you tell us a little more about the site, ie what more do you plan to do with it, and how you plan to support it (unfortunately we can't ignore the practical aspects of things). After what happened with dvdspot, no offense, but I have to admit that I'm a little leery of keeping info on a site that I have no control over.

Yes, knowing the long-term plans is important before anyone is going to be willing to put in a big personal investment/commitment. Glyde offers a lot for virtually free, including packing materials. How all this and the basic hosting costs will need to be paid somehow, so I'd also be interested in the basic business model.

Aren't there any Asian versions of DVDSpot? I'd expect some people in Japan and Korea to be cataloging their DVDs.

There might be, but they're probably not very usable for people in America and Europe.

Chasing the Frog appears to have a far more practical printable list than DVDAf, but I'm not sure I feel up to the task of manually adding 2,000 films to my account.

Why not? I'd rather use the sites to get info on Japanese DVDs than enter all that myself on another cataloging site. I'm assuming that people who are watching hundreds of Asian DVDs have some familiarity with the relevant languages.

Yeah, certainly, these are totally legit concerns. So, the business model is commerce based. You don't have to sell something from your collection, but if you do, you'll see just how incredibly easy it is. Same thing with buying. A lot of people have a lot of things on their shelves that they'd rather just let sit and collect dust than try to sell through the current online channels. We want to make it simple for everyone.

Everything else we offer is free. And as we grow, we'll add more features and capabilities. Plus we're young and very open to suggestions and feedback. I should clarify though that we do have to pass on the cost of the packaging materials, but we feel that's better than having the seller drive out to the store and buying it themselves.

Just out of curiosity, how are your operating costs (hosting, bandwidth, etc) getting funded?
