when will we see Yentl on DVD?

I am only a casual fan of Barbra Streisand, but this is the one movie in her filmography I would love to own on DVD (much like I am very casual on Bette Midler, but own The Rose). This has been promised on DVD for years, but yet nothing. This winter marks 25 years since it's original release, any chance for a release later this year?

For some reason that made me think of Zelig (one of the only Woody movies I liked). That I want to see on DVD.

Zelig has been out on DVD for over six years.

I'd love to own Yentl too; a 25th anniversary SE would be awesome.

I still have the laserdisc from MGM/UA but it is full screen. The pisser is that the theatrical trailer is included and it's letterboxed! I have a feeling 20th Century Fox might put this out now that they control MGM's video library unless its production date excludes it. Maybe a music rights issue is to blame as well...

I remember reading Streisand had recorded a commentary track for Yentl about a year or so ago. I had expected it to be released when all her other films came out (Nuts, Main Event, Up the Sandbox, What's Up Doc, etc). I too am a huge fan of the film...although I still feel cheated that the film didn't end with a three-some (oy-vey! Talk about breaking traditions!) --Peter

Back in 2003, Barbra appeared on the Oprah show, and was asked this very question by an audience member. She said that she recorded an audio commentary in 2002, for a supossed 20th anniversary DVD. It never came. Barbra said she didn't have a clue as to why it is not being released. She approved the print they used, she approved the soundtrack - everything. She was just as confused as the audience member, and she didn't seem to happy about it either - clearly she has been asked this question a LOT.

I personally have emailed MGM countless times, and i have never gotten a response. 2008 is the 25th anniversary, so here's to praying for the Blu-ray! "Yentl" had been shown on Showtime HD a number of times about three years ago, but hasn't been shown since. Point being, it looked amazing in HD, proving the HD processing has been done, so...WTF are they waiting for??? I could understand if this was an obscure title, but it was a huge money maker back in 1983, also a crictal smash, and the soundtrack itself went many times platinum. Plus, it is BARBRA STREISAND in one of her most beloved films - if not the MOST beloved of her filmography.

ps. i have it on DVD too. I DVR'd it off of Showtime and transferred it onto two DVD's to ensure the best picture quality the digital cable could provide. BUT, of course it is not in 5.1 or 16x9. And even though it is far better than a VHS transfer, it is not the same quality picture that a DVD or (obviously) a Blu-ray can provide. Come on MGM! Clean up your act!!

I've never seen the whole movie, but my mom loves it. every year, she puts the DVD on her birthday and Christmas list.

All I could provide her with was a DVD-R copy from cable. And because of it's run time, it's in LP mode. I could split it up onto two discs like any1992 did, but I decided to sacrifice quality for the convenience of not having to get up and switch discs.

Can the waiting FINALLY be over?

DVDEmpire has a 25th Anniversary Edition of Yentl up for pre-order, with a 2/3/09 release date:

I almost broke down and ordered the R2 release the other day. SO glad I didn't!

Re: when will we see Yentl on DVD?

like wow - AMAZON had this item it system yesterday for 8.99

HOWEVER - its now been DELISTED - no entry !!

All the details / links to YENTL DVD have suddenly disappeared. Then again - for a 2 disc set - I can't imagine the price will be anywhere near the price above.

I know you posted this a couple of hours ago, so maybe they changed the page, but Digital Bits currently has it listed as coming out on February 3rd. I ordered this from Amazon a while back, and the order is still listed on their site. I'm hoping it'll go through for the $8.99 price.

strange - but I looked on Digital Bits yesterday and got to Amazon via a link. Either I'm blind - but I can't seem to find any reference on DB anymore.

As for the 8.99 - after reading the DVD package details and seeing the RRP I'm doubting that you'd get it for that now.

Re: when will we see Yentl on DVD?

I just got an e-mail from Amazon that my order has been cancelled... with a link to order it again for $20.99. I still want this, definitely, but I think I'll wait until I can find it cheaper.

Looks like it is; mine is "shipping soon" from Amazon. I went ahead and ordered it there after all, for $19.99, since I had a gift card to use. I haven't seen this film in years, can't wait to watch it again!

Re: when will we see Yentl on DVD?

Does anyone know what happen with this release? I noticed that mcarver put it on the list of OOP titles for this week and there is no retailer or e-tailer carrying it.
