Are the Director Collections worth it?
Well basically I really wanna buy my first criterion... and I chose Do the Right Thing but as I was shopping, I found a Spike Lee Joint Collection. Are they worth it? It has 5 movies on it, including Do the Right Thing and its cheaper. Other movies are, (Clockers/ Jungle Fever/ Mo` Better Blues/ Crooklyn.)
Should I get my first criterion and be real happy with it, or get 5 movies but not a criterion, director collection.

I need to order this by tomorrow what'd you think I should get
Spike Lee Collection : comes with 5 movies including Do The Right Thing (the movie I want to really see)
Or just 1 movie: Do the Right Thing Criterion
I'm going the other way now and leaning towards the Spike Lee Collection because I can watch 4 other movies for the same price and I know I can buy more a criterion in the future

It really comes down to preference of extras or value. If you like bonus features, then the Criterion edition of Right Thing has some fantastic supplements, chief among them a great audio commentary and an hour-long making-of documentary.
On the other hand, if you're a "more bang for the buck" kind of guy, and only plan on watching the extras once or twice, then the 5-pack might be the way to go. While I would place Crooklyn, Jungle Fever and Mo' Better Blues as "second tier" Lee movies (which is to say they're certainly not bad, but they're not particularly great either), Clockers is one of his greatest films, and the second-best thing he's done so far (Malcolm X being #1).
According to this thread, all of the titles in the collection have been remastered/given the anamorphic treatment (and are only available in the box set), so the picture quality might be better than Criterion's. Oh, and here's an older thread about the collection that might give you more info.
If you want my opinion if like value AND supplements: get the box set now, and wait for a sale/good used price on the Criterion set. After you get that, consider your earlier version of Right Thing as a backup copy.
