My top five animated films, hmmm... As much as I like and respect most Disney and Pixar films, I can't think of any that would be in my top list (except maybe for Pinocchio). I think I even like the underappreciated Dreamworks animated films more than the computer animation films. I prefer hand-drawn I suppose. It's not that I have anything against computer animation, it's just that they all have that same look (although I'm looking forward to Vincent Gallo's computer-animated Metropia). I'll throw in "not counting Miyazaki/Ghibli" as well in there because most of the Ghibli masterpieces tops everything. And who doesn't like Akira or Ghost In the Shell? It's the same as not liking air or food! ;) So...the most special animated films that I have discovered over the years which fortunately have English-subtitled dvds are: 1. Mind Game (Japan) 2. Kirikou and the Sorceress (France) 3. Monkey King: Uproar In Heaven (China) 4. The Secret of Kells (Ireland) 5. Les Maîtres du Temps aka Time Masters (France) |
Re: Post pics of your DVD collection and HT, Part 12
Yeah I wasn't sure any Disney would be in your top five but I wanted to hear what more obscure animated titles you've come across and really enjoyed. So your list is exactly what I was looking for. From your list I've only seen Mind Game and Kirikou (both on your recommendation actually) but that Secret of Kells looked really cool. You mentioned it felt like the work of Genndy Tartakovsky which really got me interested. I'm sure I'll pick that up soon. I've only seen pics of Monkey King but it looked to have a really interesting art style. Time Masters I haven't seen either but I loved Gandahar so I'll be getting that one soon. I'll post pics of my collection soon. I gotta clean the room up a bit first though.

Are there any obscure animation titles that you know of and recommend? |

Anything by Ub Iwerks. His two discs of Cartoons That Time Forgot are some of my most played dvds. His work is so original and the gags still hold up extremely well. Anything by the Brothers Quay. Their films are amazing. Robot Carnival - A series of animated shorts from Japan. The shorts range in quality but it's a very good film overall. Plague Dogs - The UK disc is the only one with the uncut version. Excellent animated film but very depressing. The Thief and the Cobbler - I would get the Recobbled Cut as that is the closest to Richard Williams original vision. The animation in this film is the best of any animated film imo. Angel's Egg - Very strange and surreal anime. Felidae - Dark German animated film about a cat dealing with murders in his neighborhood. Very good movie. Amazing Mr. Bickford - Ultra surreal mix of Bruce Bickford clay animation and Frank Zappa music. |

I'm going to research the others you recommended! |

Re: Post pics of your DVD collection and HT, Part 12
The Thief and the Cobbler Recobbled Version was created from several sources so the quality varies from scene to scene. I'd say about 75% is very good dvd quality presentation, 20% is slightly blurry/out of focus scenes from a workprint, and 5% or less is storyboards with color. A fully restored version of this would by my Blu Ray holy grail.

So overall, it all flows together nicely (the overall quality of the video and the cuts merged together)? |
Re: Post pics of your DVD collection and HT, Part 12
I'm pretty sure I got mine in early 2008. It's assembled very well and flows just like a regular movie.

My copy is actually a bootleg. It only has the English audio but the voice acting is actually pretty decent.

How do you find the time to watch all three thousand something titles? I have just over two thousand and it seems as if I'm buying quicker than I can watch them. |

Re: Post pics of your DVD collection and HT, Part 12
Its amazing to see the setups that some people have their collections. I have a pretty big collection of movies, but have not taken any pics. One thing i do get from this thread though is that some people have a hell of a lot of money to spend on this luxury and also a lot of time to back it up. For many years i had a list i kept that always had the movies that i still needed to buy, about 18 months ago i finally caught up on the list. These days i only buy movies that i really enjoy. I realized at the time that occassionally i bought the odd movie that i was not really in love with, and that i might only watch once. It really put things into perspective for me. Why buy something that i don't really like or need. I certainly don't have the time to re-watch all my movies, so i have stopped collecting as feverishly as i once did. If you have the time and the money to spend on this recreation then more power to you, but i guess i just felt that my money was spent better in other activities that i find more fulfilling. Still some nice collections and nice set ups.
