I watched two discs of WrestleMania 24 yesterday, and I'm glad to say that it's as good as I remembered. Is it the show that I would have booked? No. Is it a "great" WrestleMania? No. But it's a damn entertaining show. Here's a quick review:

Finlay vs. JBL
I'm not too crazy about this match. I think these two guys have a talent for mixing brawling with technical wrestling, and they didn't really capitalize on either. To me, this match resembled every so-so weapons match you see in TNA, where they just throw stuff in the ring and swing the weapons, but there's not much story. I know this was the culmination of the McMahon child storyline, so it's even more of a disappointment to see it come down it one so-so opening 8 1/2 minute match. It's not a bad match, it just should have been better. An odd choice for an opener.

**1/2 (out of 5)

Money in the Bank Ladder Match
In my opinion, ladder matches have peaked. There have been so many amazing spots in such a short amount of time, it's hard to imagine what they can do next. But any time you have CM Punk, John Morrison, Shelton Benjamin, and Chris Jericho in the ladder match, you know it will be at least pretty good. All the MITBs have been successes, so I would put this somewhere after the first two and before the third (which I was not too crazy about). Some great spots, everyone shined, Matt Hardy returns, and the finish was nice.

***1/2 (out of 5)

Batista vs. Umaga
I don't know why I had high expectations for this one. I think I figured because Batista had a nice series with Undertake and Umaga was a pretty quick "big man" who had good chemistry with John Cena and Jeff Hardy, that these two would deliver a fast-paced power brawl. There's some good stuff in here, but this is just such a throwaway match it's not even funny. I wanted this to be like Lashley/Umaga at WM 23, but without the welcomed interference of Vince McMahon, Shane McMahon, Armando Estrada, and Donald Trump, there was only so much they could do book this. I thought this would like one of those Goldberg/Steiner matches, but it was alright for what it was. Still...a disappointment.

**1/4 (out of 5)

ECW World Heavyweight Title: Chavo Guerrero vs. Kane
I know it was only eight seconds long, but did anyone order WM to see a storyless match between Chavo Guerrero and Kane? This match did exactly what it was supposed to: it put a "world" title on Kane (ten years after his last, was an entertaining segment, didn't waste time on a match no one asked for, and left other time for the rest of the show. An entertaining segment, not a real match.

***

Ric Flair vs. Shawn Michaels
Before they even announced this match, we knew it was heavily rumored. I went up to one of my friends and described exactly how I wanted the match to end, with Ric Flair summoning Michaels to finish him. It's been a while since a match ended EXACTLY as I envisioned. This one was a classic from a start to finish. It had a riveting storyline with months behind it, it had a nice buildup, and the match itself was pretty fantastic, too. Flair pulled his old tricks, and some new ones, too. Michaels killed himself to give Flair his best, and all the while the storyline remained intact without becoming a distraction. A match that it as at once fast-paced, entertaining, and powerful, the last few minutes of this match are just the best you'll ever see. The crowd is so into it, and the match holds up beautifully. The match is reminiscent of HBK/Hogan in that the air of the match is so rich, even if on paper it's not technically a great match. But this one is so intense, it's hard to find any flaws. Ric Flair should be proud that this masterpiece was his final match, and Shawn Michaels should be even prouder that he was the other guy. My favorite match of the year, and it's probably going to stay that way. I don't see anything topping this in my book for some time.

***** (out of 5)

Playboy Bunnymania Lumberjack match
I have a theory that after HBK/Flair, everyone who was left on the card in the locker room let out a collective "f*ck." This was a so-so tag match. The divas deserve better, but there's really only so much Maria and Ashley can do. The interaction between Santino, Jerry Lawler, and Snoop Dogg made it kind of entertaining.

**

WWE Championship: Randy Orton vs. Triple H vs. John Cena
Am I the only one who saw it coming? The match was pretty much build up as John Cena vs. Triple...with Randy Orton's title on the line? All the fuss was made about Cena's return and revenge on Orton, HHH's return from missing WM, that it seemed almost inevitable to have a bummer ending. Cena or HHH winning would have been self-defeating and stale, and this establishes Orton as a top heel. This was obviously not as great as the 3-way title match at WM XX (HHH/HBK/Benoit), but it was not as breezy as the 3-way title match at WM 22 (Angle/Mysterio/Orton). This was somewhere in between. It had some nice intensity, but because the story was kind of light, there was a breezyness to the whole match. This had some great spots, and some greta interactions. This was a real triple-threat match, and not a series of 1-on-1 matches with the other guy out of the ring. And if I may say, I like it simply because it's refreshing to see both Triple H AND Cena not in the main event. Good action, good spots, and a really awesome finish.

***3/4

The Big Show vs. Floyd Mayweather
Let me just say: I disliked this feud from the second it started. As soon as Big Show's music hit at No Way Out a few seconds after the end of Edge/Mysterio, I was perplexed. The Show/Mayweather segment was awkward and sloppy (though it did have a nice "shoot" feel). I hated the buildup to this match. People had waited a year for Big Show to come back, only for him to turn heel within seconds. But get this, he turns heel against a guy who's bragging about how much money he has. The color lines were gray here, with Show seeming like a cowardly heel one minute and a powerful face the next. The same goes for Mayweather. Who booked this? Vince Russo? I didn't care for the buildup, I thought it was a waste of Show's talent, and I didn't think much of the match. It was just...so-so. The last couple of minutes had some good stuff, and I think Show ended up looking even better for losing, but this whole thing was unneccessary. I'd say I was disappointed, but I kinda knew it would suck.

**1/4

World Heavyweight Championship: Edge vs. The Undertaker
It is so refreshing to not only see a SmackDown! main event at WM again, but a main event that doesn't have Triple H OR John Cena. Don't get me wrong, I don't dislike either, I just got tired of them going on last. This one technically had the most buildup, with Edge cashing in on his second MITB briefcase against Undertaker, causing UT the loss at Survivor Series, taking his pin at Armageddon for the title win, and the knowledge that technically he was undefeated at WM, too (unless you count the MITB match featuring that same briefcase, which incidentally, he lost). This had a nice steady build with some good spots along the way, masterful storytelling, and UT sold his injuries like a madman (I'm convinced he was really hurt), and the last few minutes were great. Edge maintained looking like a cowardly heel while still backing it up (he finds clever ways out of old school, the last ride, and he kicks out of the tombstone). To me, Edge is the new Triple H. This was a much richer experience than Batista/UT last year, with a more rewarding feel afterwards. I'm surprised that they had such an older performer winning the main event of a WM ( a spot usually reserved for "new" guys--Cena,Batista, Lesnar, Austin, etc.) but it was still good. Even though the match felt anticlimactic to see after Flair/HBK, they did a better job than HHH and Jericho did after being shown up by Rock and Hogan at WM 18.

Overall, a really entertaing show. Not as good as WM 21 or 23, but somewhere close.

Does anyone know where I can get a Judgment Day 2001 DVD? Besides eBay. I've got an Original WWF Royal Rumble 2001 DVD, Region 2 for sale too!

I picked up 3 of the BestBuy Exclusive Wrestlemania 24 DVD's yesterday, if anyone still needs one, let me know.

Great work on that. I am a sucker for the special edition tins from FYE, so I paid more for mine. I had some store credit though so that took a bit of the edge off of it. It cost me exactly $22.01.

Quick Backlash 2008 DVD note, it seems that it has been enhanced to 16:9 like WrestleMania XXIV.

Thoughts on the HOF later.

Very nice review, although i would have rated the main event higher (take out the lame ref bump spot and its at least a 4 1/4 star match.) Also, the Flair Michaels match i would take down a half a point or so. Yes the match is great and all, but there are certain points where it seemed like they were going in slow motion, and a spot or 2 came off as sloppy. Prob a 4.5 star match

great to know! i guess they will do that from now on. I was surprised they didn't for Royal Rumble and No Way Out.

This is going to sound strange and maybe I missed something, but I found a whole bunch of copies of WM 24 with the BB exclusive senitype...at Circuit City.

CaseyB 05-28-08 01:12 AM

I watched the Hall of Fame a couple times now, since I enjoyed it that much. They changed the order of the inductions, as The Rock origininally was the first to induct his family members. As a result of that the JBL comment about how The Rock forgot about the term "go home" was edited off since it wouldn't have made any sense to those watching the DVD. Also, in addition to editing out the Chris Benoit reference during the Flair speech, they also edited HHH asking Flair to wrap it up after the production guys were throwing a fit. I never had any respect for Maria, but that look she had on her face during the Mae Young speech struck me the wrong way. All in all it's a wonderful set...and for what it's worth I'd highly recommend picking up the set for those who are on the fence.

FamVid has it for a couple bucks more, and 99 cents shipping I believe.

If it's released in the states, then that's awesome, but I already have SS '01, '02, '03, and '05-'07. If they release the individual sets, I'll get the first one, because I really want SS '90 and '91 on DVD.

It looks like Victory Road 2007 is now available in the TNA webstore, I guess it's no longer just at FYE.
