any tip on the fold required to get the cover art to fit in the slim cases? i'm not going to cut it...seems like a straight edge of some kind would make it easier?

I actually have alot of mine converted to thin pack....I would suggest for those "wavering" convert the rentals and dvds worth less then $5 and see how you feel...just keep the nice ones and you will save lots of space.

I also have joined in on the mutilation, independently of those already identified.
I don't do it to all cases, just ones I know I will never want to sell or part with. I bought'em because I love the film, not as investments. It's one thing to slim down some Kevin Smith movies or Woody Allen movies to fit.. let's wait and see if I ever take a rough hand to my Criterions!

I just sort of haphazardly folded. That way, if we ever do convert back or sell them, they'll be more complete.

started converting tonight...did about 40 of them and then my folding fingers got tired

found it worked pretty slickly to use a ruler as a straight edge to fold up the sides and set a crease and then press it flat - after a few of them i got a rhythm down pretty good. and I have to say the space savings is pretty dramatic with just the first row i did. it's going to make a huge difference, and i'll be transferring all my $5-$10 discs to these from now on.

Thanks for the ruler advice. Should help out a lot

I started converting too, and I can notice the difference with just about 20 titles converted.

I recently started converting my DVDs to slimpaks. I've gone through a little over 300 so far and they look great. I've got another 500 cases on order (400 single-disc, 100 double-disc) too.

Anyone have any suggestions on where to find coverart online? I want to replace the snapper cases too, but they won't fit into the slimpak cases.

You shoud try r1db.com, they are pretty good and replacethecase.com is another good one, both have amazing artist working on there sites, but both of those cost $$$ to download covers. cdcovers.cc is free but the quality is lacking to say the least

Thanks. I guess I should revise my question. Any (Free) suggestions? Obviously if I have to print something out that would cost money in paper and ink, but aside from that, I'm mainly looking for free covers.

Any of these sites offer covers for free, but you have to be a contributor of some sort for that benefit. Whether that be designing covers yourself to share or uploading hi-res artwork for others to use.

AFAIK, there are no substantial free sites out there. At 3-4MB per cover bandwidth has to be covered by someone. Credits are fairly cheap on these sites. Like JJE mentioned cdcovers.cc is free, but you get what you pay for.

I would love to see some peoples before and after pics of the amount of space saved with TP's. I don't have a camera or I would show my 1000+ collection I have stored in a 4x5 space, most 75% are in Thinpaks, almost 200 are in Binders for now and about 100 or so are still in standard size cases

This is what I do ...

I used to be really fanatical about the cases too but there comes a point when you realize that its just a plastic box and I'll expect to be running everything off a hard disc before long.

I look back at my VHS collection and laugh about how anal I was with those. Where are they now? The garbage.

excellent point.

ps: sure, your drawer idea is the ultimate in space saving of course, however I'm afraid if I went that route, with them being out of sight, they'd also be out of mind. A lot of times I need to scan the wall of discs until something catches my eye.

Just placed an order for some 7mm single cases and 7mm double cases. The price for 100 seemed to be better at shop4tech.com at $28 and free shipping. Plus you can use LS10 coupon at checkout for 10% off.

I'd love some more information on those drawer sleeves Palooka.

It looks like they are large enough to hold all the disc sleeves and even the slipcovers maybe?

I definitely believe in the "out of sight, out of mind" thing, and know that personally, I need to display at least a large part of my collection. But I have 500+ in binders right now, and need to make more room. But those drawers and sleeves look nice, maybe I can use them instead of my binders.

Could you post the pricing and other details and your thoughts on them?

Started the conversion to thinpaks today. I'm getting the covers from r1db.com - they have some nice stuff. I'm happy with the way things look too. I'm not going to convert those titles which have special boxes or where the inserts are too thick to insert into the thinpak case.

they hold about 60-64 DVDs per drawer and have 6 drawers for a total of about 360+ DVDs which is less than 50 cents per DVD as opposed to less than 25 cents... But, I'm sure it took me much less time to put these two drawer sets together than it would take to transfer over 700 discs to slim cases and having to cut or fold the artwork... I don't know about you, but my time is worth at least something... if you're doing one of these every 5 minutes, that amounts to 6 bucks an hour.

plus, I keep DVDs and CDs in them as well. You could also get these in a wider model for only 20 bucks more and hold nearly 200 more discs. My main problem would be getting rid of all my slipcases and special edition packaging... which is 1/3 to one half of my collection.
i like those. may have to pick one up at ikea.

Are these the same set of drawers?

Kind of pricey but it would be nice to not have to dust my shelves all the time.

For the people converting to slim cases, but stressing about cutting up the cover-art to fit. Why not just leave them cover-art free ??? Leave them intact in their original cases for future use.....Then with the new layout, you could place a card every so many cases (like 10 or 25 or so) that has a protruding tab that you could write/print the titles on so you can locate the general area of the desired movie you're looking for. The narrow edge where the title would be read is so thin anyway, chances are you're going to pull a bunch out before you get to the correct one.

I like the sleeves that PALOOKA posted. This is the only thing I could find that looks close to that:

http://www.mmdesign.com/products/dvd2-sleeve.htm

Does anybody know of something like this that's a little cheaper (hopefully)?

This was the link Palooka gave in another thread to the sleeves he uses.

Anybody care to post any more pics of their handiwork. I'm still waiting for my slims to arrive. I think I'll get rid of all my snappers first.

I have well over 1000 dvds and when we moved x-country, I knew I had to get rid of cases. So I got a nice Lorentz cube: http://www.lorentzdesign.com/CD_DVD_...rage_Cube.html, a whole bunch of cd sleeves, and then resealable plastic sleeves that held artwork, liner notes, and the disc: https://www.american-digital.com/pro...uct.asp?p=1381 The Lorentz cube actually makes a nice endtable next to our sofa.

It's a similar set up to the Disc Sox storage solution pictured above (very nice gear there Palooka!). While it may not be as pleasing to the eye, my set up is much more economical (around $50 for 1000 cd sleeves and plastic outer sleeves and $275 for the cube which I think, holds about 750 discs; they make a 4-drawer unit which will probably hold around 1000). The DiscSox are around $1 each.

The plastic outer sleves fit into the drawers of the cube sideways, and two across. I folded the dvd artwork so that the title on the spine would be on top and could be read while flipping through the drawer. However, WB's snappers are a problem. I'll try to post some pics at some point.

Thanks for this link, I think this is what I'm looking for. Can you tell me the measurements of the DVD sleeves: height and width?
