SPiRAL 03-16-08 02:58 PM

I gots to have that.

Matthew Ackerly 03-16-08 02:59 PM

OK...... So where the hell can I get one?

fumanstan 03-16-08 03:03 PM

That's kind of neat. Seems like more flash then substance though.

Sessa17 03-16-08 03:50 PM

I find it funny that he is embarrases for Titanic being hin his collection, while it is sitting right next to the Broderick Godzilla crapfest, a DVD no man shown own, not even if you were in it.

shacmasta 03-16-08 04:17 PM

That's f'n cool.

domino harvey 03-16-08 04:21 PM

He and I have different definitions of the word "crazy"

mikelowry 03-16-08 05:18 PM

Gotta have that too!

edman180 03-16-08 05:21 PM

Awesome shelf, wonder how much it costs

Overpar 03-16-08 07:04 PM

Now I know where I can stash the porn!

And it's the old extra-crappy old version of Titanic as well. Also, why are those movies front and center while the Indiana Jones, Harry Potter and Star Wars movies remain hidden in the sub-compartment?

calhoun07 03-17-08 12:53 AM

Great idea until that back compartment gets stuck one day and he can't watch the good movies he's hiding back there. Then we will see how "CRAZY!" it is.

johnbook 03-17-08 01:10 AM

The guy has watched 1 too many Jack Black movies, sounds alot like him, by the way there is crap in that collection and Titanic was definately not it, and the shelf i'll pass.

Fok 03-17-08 01:38 AM

Nice, must be quite expensive though

Yeah, that kinda takes the "wow" out of the whole presentation.

Apone 03-17-08 06:36 AM

The shelf goes up, shelf goes down. The shelf goes up, shelf goes down.

The very first thought in my mind when I saw the hidden shelves rise!

Along with "Titanic" and "Godzilla." ;)

rexinnih 03-17-08 07:47 AM

Wow. Just wow.

matome 03-17-08 08:07 AM

Pretty cool, to be sure.

MScottM 03-17-08 08:38 AM

Did anyone else think that the motor was working awfully hard to raise that shelf? It seemed like it was close to the max load that the motor could push, and it looked like he had one more compartment to fill with DVDs.

It looks cool, but I would want one with just a little more power before I would buy.

Yeah, until the secret escalating shelf gets stuck shut, & you have to ask the people who installed it to come over to fix it, where they find your immense amount of hidden-pervy-porn short circuited the elevating system.

"Hey Bob, I found the problem. "Ass Masters Vol 24" and "Golden Shower Grannies Vol 12" were stuck in the servo".

shyguy1083 03-17-08 08:20 PM

wouldn't it just be easier to have two shelves sitting side-by-side instead of having it stick out twice as thick? dunno, seems annoying too to have to wait for the second compartment to lift up as slowly (it wasn't THAT slow, but eh) as it did. would be easier to just open a door and grab a box.

danwiz 03-17-08 09:13 PM

I'll pass too - I'd rather have 2 shelves side by side or one on top of the other. Actually I think my home built shelf is MUCH nicer, you can find pics of it here:

Damn, I have to say that is a very nice shelf (and collection!). I assume the left panel must stick out awkwardly though.

danwiz 03-17-08 10:49 PM

To TheDuke: Actually - if you look at the right hand picture you see that the left panel "closes" and if you take a look at the "base" you see that there is nothing awkward about the way it sticks out. Understand?

I've seen pictures of your shelf before (VERY nice by the way) and I'm sure it was asked in that thread but can't remember.
Is there any reason why you don't have two closing shelves? I think my collection would fit perfectly with two "doors", plus I think it would look nicer closed up.

DonnachaOne 03-18-08 04:06 AM

Oh my... gosh?

Rockmjd23 03-18-08 05:09 AM

I'd buy one...but then I'd have something in common with the jackass in the video. :(

islandclaws 03-18-08 10:45 AM

Looks neat, but I'm sure I'd get pretty tired of raising that thing over and over anytime I wanted to watch a film that was hidden. Still, good for him if he's so excited.

I see it now. I didn't actually look at the second picture before :brickwl:

Or one from the back section slips and gets wedged between shelves. Up...snap...fuck!

Looks cool, but not practical.

I've been wanting to make something similar to this, but I wasn't sure that the piano hinge would be strong enough to support the weight of the swinging shelf. Have you had any problems with it?

I just showed pictures of his shelf to a guy I work with who makes cabinets in his spare time. He seemed pretty excited to try his hand (with his own improvements) and says he will only charge the cost of materials for his first attempt. Of course his will include both folding shelves.

danwiz 03-19-08 12:10 AM

I've had absolutely no problems with anything getting loose and no splitting of the wood with the use of the piano hinges. Course the hinge has something like 39 screws per side, so it's unlikely that there would be any problems. The only reason I have not built both sides of it yet is because the layout of the room is much more user friendly with only the left side complete. Of course when I get everything filled then I'll feel more compelled to build the right hand closing shelf.

Deputy Dave - please show me some pictures of the version the guy at work builds for you. Never know - I might want to try it a 2nd time! I'm just an amateur woodworker though. So, please remember my name and e-mail me some pictures when the project is complete, I'd REALLY appreciate it. Thank you in advance.

Cool, I will. The only thing he mentioned he would do differently was the way you joined the shelves to the side. I don't know anything about woodworking (and am completely impressed with your shelf) so I didn't get completely what he was talking about.

I did understand why you staggered the braces/spacers on the shelves after he explained it. It was one thing that always stood out but I guess it is necessary.

danwiz 03-19-08 01:57 AM

Thanks a bunch DeputyDave.

Did you come up with the design yourself? Because if he decides to sell them you should get a taste.
