I can understand the trailer-only approach for Twilight Zone: The Movie, but Poltergeist was ridiculous.
My pick has to be Warner's 2-disc set of Droopy cartoons. No real extras, only the CinemaScope cartoons are restored and remastered (the rest are mediocre older transfers except for Dixieland Droopy). Droopy's Good Deed is finally uncut, but it has terrible DVNR smearing. I wish they'd just go ahead and put out 4-disc sets of the restored MGM cartoons (Happy Harmonies, Tom & Jerry, Droopy, Tex Avery, etc). I was annoyed that the Droopy set has an MSRP of $27 (got it for $22) since it really wasn't worth the price. |
Little Children was given a very shitty DVD as well.
|
Not necessarily the worst, but the extras on POTCIII were really lousy.
|
It would have been the HD DVD box set of Jack Ryan (which I screened), but given that Paramount pulled that, I have to go with Bram Stoker's Dracula on Blu-ray.
There's a whole thread in the Hi-Def section on why. :) |

The non-DC cover of "Zodiac" had the same problem. Giant floating heads of the cast over the Golden Gate Bridge. |
Bug is a great film, dvd seems to be good too, has a commentary...(that I haven't checked out)
|
There were a number of big releases lately that lacked the extras I thought they would have.
Harry Potter, as mentioned above, seemed thin in the extras. Spidey 3 was decent but that Target bonus disc was worthless. The Simpsons Movie should of been a 2 DVD release. They talked about so many ideas they cut or altered I am sure they had more deleted scenes or rough storyboards. As much as I love Hot Fuzz I have to say the way this movie has been released on DVD makes it my most hated DVD debacle of the year. I own 2 copies of the movie, 1 Wal-Mart bonus DVD and I believe there is a wrapped version of the 3 DVD set sitting under the tree behind me. I love the movie but no fan should be treated so poorly in less than 1 year. |
Simpsons...Just should of had so much more
Futurama...that comic reading was a huge disappointment, I would have loved to have seen the actual cast up on stage reading and the audience enjoying it rather then just trying to read the comic off the screen And finally Eastern Promises, I just bought it today and I haven't popped it in yet, but there are only two extras listed on the back...one about the setting of London and another on the importance of tattoos in Russian Crime Families. |

After the great A History Of Violence DVD this is sooo dissapointing. I think Focus Features is to blame. They have been making shit DVD's for about 5 years. Some of the best films of the past 5 years have been released by Focus Features and most of them have been absolutely terrible. I guess they dont believe in the audio commentary over there. The only good one I can think of is Eternal Sunshine of the spotless mind (2-disk Collector's edition) but they even screwed us on that by releasing a 1 disk version only 4 months previously. |
Zodiac-only b/c they're double dipping, could've done it once
& Futurama-for the packaging |
Extras used to be super-important to me but, i don't really have the time to watch all the extras AND the movie so, I choose the movie over the extras. I will however make all the time in the world to watch every single second of the Blade Runner collections!
That being said, I thought Bug & Wind chill have to be two of the worst films I have seen all year. |
At worlds end - lack of extras
Under Siege bluray umm only the trailer EWS- no commentary?? 300- had what? 15 mins of extras? Order of the phoenix blu-ray- horrible selection of extras Departed- decent but i expected more especially a COMMENTARY. there will definitely be a new release. Blade Runner--- just kidding lol |
300 was packaged as a 2-disc release, but everything could have been put into 1 DVD. The Making of documentary was maybe 12 minutes tops. You would think for a movie like this they would have assembled hours of pre-production, production and post production footage.
The Departed was disappointing because of no Scoresee commentary and the fact there wasn't even a documentary about the movie. They could have easily created an hour long documentary on the origins of the movie, adapting it for the American audiences, casting and prroduction. They could have even interviewed some of the people from Infernal Affairs like the directors. |
The video quality of HP was disappointing (mostly the first 30 minutes) but the movie was great. Zodiac was a horrendous transfer.

There are MANY films that are bare-bone releases. But to my view, Perfume: Story of a Murderer is one of the absolutely best looking SD releases of the year. There should be a LONG list of DVDs to be picking on before this ever should be mentioned. |
people complaing about 300, need to get the HD-DVD version, has a awesome Video commentary with being able to watch the bluescreen version of the flick.
