Your Worst DVD's of 2007
What are your worst dvd's of 2007?
Mine are: (off the top of my head) -Twilight Zone -Poltergeist -Top Gun (HD-DVD) -Spider-man Trilogy (Blu-Ray) -Live Free or Die Hard (Blu-ray) |
You definitely need to explain Spiderman and LFDH.

-No unrated version on LFODH. This means that you have to own multiple copies of each movie to get the full plate of special features. i thought that all that space on the blu ray would have been plenty. With these releases I felt like I was getting screwed. |
Though I haven't popped it in yet, probably The Simpsons Movie just because of its lack of extras.
|
^ Really? I heard the commentary was great...

Poltergeist hands down!

Zodiac is probably the most disappointing DVD of 2007, if only because it's probably going to be an early candidate for one of the best DVDs of 2008 once the Director's Cut comes out next month.
Other than that, maybe Grindhouse simply because it would've been really nice if they put both movies in one package and included the fake trailers (which some people actually thought was the best part of seeing Grindhouse). |
Zodiac
Live Free Or Die Hard (Blu-Ray) At Worlds End (Blu-Ray) |
Bug sucked! Although the actors did their best, this one could not be saved. Plus, the box says "Special Edition", but it's the only edition that was released! I hate when they do that. The only good thing was Ashley Judd necked!

Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (R1)
Pirates 3 |
Poltergeist: easy choice. Piss poor extras for a 25th Anniversary Edition.
The Simpsons: great flick but you'd have to be an ass to not know it's getting double and triple dipped. (Yes, I still bought it.) Casino Royale: pretty weak 2-disc set for an amazing film (I know there's a new one coming, that makes this worse. It should have been definitive off the bat.) Twilight Zone: I know why, but couldn't we have gotten something extra? |

Twilight Zone and Poltergeist, but only because they could have been so much more.
I have to go with Harry Potter: Order of the Phoenix given it's lack of extras and sketchy transfer. I will also mention The Simpsons Movie, Rocky Balboa, and Casino Royale since it's clear they were just cash grabs and better versions will be coming soon. The only one I picked up is The Simpsons since it got me $10 off Season 10 at Costco. |
Worst is a little subjective. For me, lack of extras is a big disappointment, but for others it might not be as important (i.e. I agree 100% with The Monkees on Spider-Man Trilogy BD and Die Hard BD)
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Dr. Katz Complete Collection that is released is the only way to get seasons 3+ AND it doesn't contain any additional special features that weren't in the first 2 season releases. Of course, I'm happy to get the complete series, but why not let me buy the other seasons separately, and keep going with the special features. Mind boggling. |

Erik The Viking, by far. They clipped over 20 minutes out of it and totally ruined the feel of the movie. Completely unviewable.

The only release that I refuse to buy is the Live Free or Die Hard blu-ray. I want both unrated and rated versions on it.
|
Twilight Zone and Poltergeist hands down for 2 very lazy DVD releases.
Honorable mentions: Spiderman 3 only because there wasn't an extensive "making of" documentary like on Part 2. Instead we got a bunch of short mini-featurettes. Pirates 3 because of no audio commentary and no extensive making of documentary like it's predecessors. Casino Royale because of no Martin Campbell or Daniel Craig commentary. There should have been an extensive making of documentary as well. |
For me it was Futurama: Bender's Big Score. I love the series but thought the story was really weak, especially after such a long lay off. I was hoping to laugh to justify the $17.99 I paid for it. The packaging was the worst I'd ever seen... it had a slit in the cardboard to hold the dvd. Like it won't get scratched taking it in & out. What the heck were they thinking? Fortunately I offed it for $15.99 on Marketplace the next day. Good riddance!

I actually felt the story was the strongest aspect, there was just too much filler in it. |

I can understand the trailer-only approach for Twilight Zone: The Movie, but Poltergeist was ridiculous.
My pick has to be Warner's 2-disc set of Droopy cartoons. No real extras, only the CinemaScope cartoons are restored and remastered (the rest are mediocre older transfers except for Dixieland Droopy). Droopy's Good Deed is finally uncut, but it has terrible DVNR smearing. I wish they'd just go ahead and put out 4-disc sets of the restored MGM cartoons (Happy Harmonies, Tom & Jerry, Droopy, Tex Avery, etc). I was annoyed that the Droopy set has an MSRP of $27 (got it for $22) since it really wasn't worth the price. |
Little Children was given a very shitty DVD as well.
|
Not necessarily the worst, but the extras on POTCIII were really lousy.
|
It would have been the HD DVD box set of Jack Ryan (which I screened), but given that Paramount pulled that, I have to go with Bram Stoker's Dracula on Blu-ray.
There's a whole thread in the Hi-Def section on why. :) |

The non-DC cover of "Zodiac" had the same problem. Giant floating heads of the cast over the Golden Gate Bridge. |
Bug is a great film, dvd seems to be good too, has a commentary...(that I haven't checked out)
|
There were a number of big releases lately that lacked the extras I thought they would have.
Harry Potter, as mentioned above, seemed thin in the extras. Spidey 3 was decent but that Target bonus disc was worthless. The Simpsons Movie should of been a 2 DVD release. They talked about so many ideas they cut or altered I am sure they had more deleted scenes or rough storyboards. As much as I love Hot Fuzz I have to say the way this movie has been released on DVD makes it my most hated DVD debacle of the year. I own 2 copies of the movie, 1 Wal-Mart bonus DVD and I believe there is a wrapped version of the 3 DVD set sitting under the tree behind me. I love the movie but no fan should be treated so poorly in less than 1 year. |
Simpsons...Just should of had so much more
Futurama...that comic reading was a huge disappointment, I would have loved to have seen the actual cast up on stage reading and the audience enjoying it rather then just trying to read the comic off the screen And finally Eastern Promises, I just bought it today and I haven't popped it in yet, but there are only two extras listed on the back...one about the setting of London and another on the importance of tattoos in Russian Crime Families. |
