Best TV series set: The Man From U.N.C.L.E. complete series. Had it a week and still going through the special features.

Best music dvd: The Song Remains The Same SE. The new DTS 5.1 audio is incredible. Who says you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.

- The Jazz Singer (1927 - 3-disc SE)

Excellent restoration of both the picture and sound (surprisingly great for 1927!), but also tons of supplements that put it into historical perspective. Besides the supplements and the restoration, the inclusion of three dozen shorts (Vitaphone, cartoons, and others) and the paper extras (the roadshow program, Jolson telegram reproduction, production photos, etc) make this the finest and most important DVD of 2007.

Not only that but i bought a region-free DVD player just so i could get this film with extras. Sadly I found the 2nd disk with extras was only in the German Language and was not subtitled in English. The soundtrack was included and it does have th nicest packaging I have ever seen though so i guess it was worth it. I pray Criterion gives this an amazing 2-disk treatment sometime in the near future.

What a great year! Here's a rundown of some of my favorite releases:

Blade Runner [HD-DVD/Blu-ray] - For those old schoolers, you know how long we have been waiting for a Blade Runner special edition set. This set was surpassed even the wildest expectations fans had for it. Five cuts including the workprint make it one of the best.

Nosferatu - Both Kino and Masters of Cinema went all out for Murnau's iconic film -I actually own both. The movie looks gorgeous at 85 years young. Great film with equally impressive DVD releases.

Kubrick Collection [HD-DVD/Blu-ray] - The movies that legitimized High Definition. Great films, beautiful transfers and bountiful of extras. It's hard to single a film out as the superior release but 2001: A Space Odyssey gets the nod for the pristine transfer and "greatness" of the film itself. I say "greatness" because I'm pretty mixed on it.

The Films of Alejandro Jodorowsky - Not only does Anchor Bay release a box set of films by a director that little have heard of but they go all out with beautiful transfers and commentaries with the man himself.

Ratatouille [Blu-ray] - Sony is lucky to have Disney on their side. Ratatouille is the best new release of the year. The movie is Pixar's best, the transfer is one of the best on the format and there are loads of extra features. The must have Blu-ray release of the year.

Diary of a Lost Girl - This choice may be influenced by the fact that Louise Brooks is one of the most beautiful women to ever appear on film. Another wonderful film put out by the greatest Region 2 company in Europe -Masters of Cinema. Great film, great transfer, and a nice 40 page book too.

Okay, I went through about 6 titles without mentioning Criterion. I admit I'm a Criterion fanboy. If not for them I would not be the film snob I am today (and I mean that in the nicest of ways)

First up is Breathless or as I prefer to call it A Bout De Souffle. A movie praised for its technical innovations but little else. I find the characters and story quite compelling and one of my favorite Godard films. The DVD boasts the best transfer available in the world and some noteworthy extras.

Days of Heaven - while some may consider this release a disappointment I think the new transfer supervised by Malick looks stunning. The package is a little light on the extras, it does include an often interesting commentary with part of the crew on the film.

Three Films by Hiroshi Teshigahara - I was mightily impressed with all three films. I can't even pick one over the other. This one gets my pick simply based on content. Pitfall, Woman of the Dunes, and The Face of Another - three great films.

Finally, we come to the crown jewel of the Criterion Collection: Rainer Werner Fassbinder's Berlin Alexanderplatz. Clocking in at 940 minutes spread across 7 discs the set is astounding. It comes in beautiful packaging too.
