When are you ever going to stop collecting dvd's?

I don't think HD discs have any bearing on my collecting of DVDs.
It will be years, if ever, before everything is released in HD only, and all old DVDs are upgraded to HD.
DVD quality is fine with me anyway. If the features are the same, I'll choose a $4.50 SD disc (CH average) over a $25 HD disc. Once the cost difference gets smaller, I'll choose HD more often.

I have 517 DVDs, I buy new DVDs every Tuesday and hence it’ll never stop!
I’ve been collecting DVDs since around 2001 but I haven’t “seriously” started collecting until I joined DVD talk in May of 06’. I love collecting this damn shiny discs and I don’t see HD or Blu-Ray discs replacing standard disc completely like SD DVDs did with VHS for a very long time, if ever.

It's not just dvd's!!! It's also videogames, cds, and tv shows that are not on dvd. Everything competing for time.
As soon as I get an HD-Player I probably get addicted to Hd-dvds.
I respect the people who able to balance everything out, and enjoy thier hobbies.
I don't wanna go crazy like that 100 dvd's in one month marathon someone was doing here.
I guess if I don't buy anything for 3 years I could catch up.

Frankly, I am not worried about HDDVD or Blueray right now. I have over a 1000 titles and would upgrade a very few when I take the hi-def splash. SO the answer is I have no intentions of stopping.

I figured w/ all that horror you would have snapped by now.

And to address the last post a bit, I agree. There are very few movies/titles that I will upgrade my SD discs to HD for. I'll slowly buy more in HD to start with, but have no plans to upgrade any titles at the moment, except Jaws someday.

OP, i hear ya bro! i'm winding down my DVD purchases, since space has become an issue, as well as other hobbies competing for my $$$, ha ha. if a title has a collectible, i'll focus on the best one and settle on the one. i'm not spending any more money on videos i barely watch more than once, and that become obsolete as other formats loom on the horizon.

I don't blind buy as much as I used to (Netflix has saved me a bundle) and I only buy DVDs I would want to keep in my collection over time. So collecting isn't a hassle to me, aside from forcing myself to buy double-triple dips of movies I already own, since my OCD needs the best version out there.

Anyway, here's what I'd recommend for you. First stop buying every new release and big title that comes down the pipe. Only buy the ones you know you absolutely love and will want to watch again and again. Second, start up a Netflix account and use that to audition new movies or old ones that you haven't seen in a long time and are on the fence about buying. Even if you go with the 8-out-at-a-time plan, this will likely save you money considering the amount you profess to buying. Finally, cut your collection down big time. If you haven't even seen 800 of these films, then they can't possibly hold much value to you. So do some major pruning. Look them all up on Half.com to get an idea of what they sell for used. If you can make $10 or more then list them and start selling. The rest, that you can't get much for take down to Hastings or GameStop or some other place that buys used DVD's in your area and unload them in bulk. You could even accept trade credit and use that toward future game & movie purchases that you absolutely must have.

Find a nice medium-sized box, and toss a bunch of DVDs in there that you think you might be able to live without. Then just let it sit in the closet or the basement for six months or so.
If by the end of that time you haven't felt the urge to open that box, then maybe you can live without them?

I won't. I'm a collector of things. DVD is just one of many things I like. I often wonder what I'll be like in 15-20 years. I've got over 2200 DVDs right now, and I just got HD-DVD, so I can't imagine how many I'll have in that long a time span. It's something I enjoy, so why stop? I love film and DVD is the best medium to enjoy it on.
