Why would it be cut?

Maybe now we can see the workprint version someday. Right.

I've heard so much about this documentary, so it's a must see just to see what everyone is excited about. I know there's a definite storied past with this movie, so I'm definitely looking forward to getting some of the background on this masterpiece.

I love Apocalypse Now and documentaries are my 2nd favorite genre...this will be a purchase for me.

They should include the bonus materials from the Circuit City exclusive disc on this one; I'm one of those guys who actually values trailers.

Two commentaries (one from Hickenlooper and another with the Coppolas) would have made made this release something truly amazing.

For some reason that link doesn't work, but it's well worth going to www.hollywood-elsewhere.com and scrolling down to find the article. Director George Hickenlooper has posted some detailed and candid comments after the article.

Apologies if this has been covered, but I heard word that the documentary made be altered for this release compared to the previous version.

Is this true and can anyone clarify?

It has been covered. There has been speculation that a comment by FFC about Martin Sheen ("He doesn't have a heart attack until I say he does!") might be cut. There's no real information on whether or not it will be.

I just read the review over at DVDBeaver. To quote Gary:

"The picture appears in its original 1.33:1 aspect ratio. Generally, the quality is poor since the footage was shot with 16mm cameras. Some scenes were shot or mastered on video, so parts of the documentary is dark and muddy. The raw footage that Francis Ford Coppola shot for his movie was un-restored (scratches, sprocket jumps, etc.), though scenes from the finished film look very good. The source could be analog video, which would explain ghosting and mild interlacing."

...if you check out Gary's review, he also shows a few screen captures that look like crap. Therefore, it seems that one shouldn't set their expectations too high for this release. In spite of the lacking video quality, I'm still buying it.

Why yes, I always expect eye-popping visuals from a 15 year old documentary that is mostly made up of old, faded, scratched-up home movies and video.

look for it in the "other" or "special interest" section. today was a treat at best buy - it took me forever to find this dvd, rescue dawn (shelved in the action section), and nirvana unplugged (buried amongst the music cds).

My Best Buy didn't have a single copy of Heart of Darkness in. Oh, they had a bajillion copies of the most obscure shitty double-dips that have been out for ages, but here's one of the most acclaimed documentaries, never before available on dvd (with the long out of print VHS ebay prices going for almost $200), and they don't get a single fucking coppy. What the fucking shit is that load of cock? At least Boarders was close by, and they had a copy - yes, only one, but they had about 50 copies of the new Hanna Montana...

True, but it appears as if Paramount made no effort at all to clean the transfer up.

Thinking about it. Did we finally decide if it was cut or not?

I just watched it and it looks and plays just fine.

I had to order my copy from HMV.ca, since neither Best Buy or Future Shop carried it.

Remember that much of this was filmed in 16mm. Even so, I had no problem with it since it was a documentary. 90% of the film is clear and clean.

For those of you who love Apocalypse Now!, this is a MUST buy. This is THE companion documentary to watch with the film.

Grab it while it's still on the market.

What's the best B&M price for this? With all the chaos of the cheap DVD's from After-Thanksgiving, I forgot that this even came out.
