Special editions-upgrade or not?

I was wondering about dvd releases. I understand that is money issues to release a movie 2-3 times until you get a dvd that you can buy for your collection. I myself is tired of waiting for a edition that i can buy. I now have have 2 diffrent copies of few movies. I have collect movies since 1998. I know 300 in 10 years is not much, but in Iceland a dvd is not cheap. All this re-releases have slow me down. I am just speaking for myself now. I am ready to pay little bit more for release that is realy intresting, Such as steelbook edition with clear pic quality, DTS sound and a lot of extra. I have noticed that some of releases is not worth it. For examble Highlander first release is famous for the worst transfer that came on the market, i bought that and also immortal edition and I see not much improved transfer. I used to buy 3-4 dvds in a month. Now it is down to 1 maybe 2 in a month. For a perfect upgrade is the James Bond ultimate editions pack. For a perfect transfer you can look at Star Wars movies and the Lord of the rings trilogy.

Once the war between HD-DVD and Blu Ray is over, unless they make players for both..who knows... then we'll see which one will come be the next standard.

I don't think that most "Special Editions" are all that special.

If it's a movie I know I'll watch over again, I'll buy newer versions to see if it's improved or not (sometimes not) or the older version had something cool in the extras that they left out in the new version.

Something like "Help" they're making the Beatle fans shell out the 100 bucks because they're not putting the extras out in the regular version.

What drives me nuts are video stores that had carried videotapes that have yet to be on DVD and completely took them off the shelves. There's still a ton of movies yet to be released on DVD, or if there is, it might not be a worldwide release and relegated to one country.

And sometimes those TV shows in the box sets have problems getting rights to background music (Beavis and Butthead, WKRP).

I am glad DVDs came out, only because this caused a lot of people to go through vaults, and the payoff are when they show restored 35mm prints prior to DVD releases. Oct 4 is going to be awesome in Hollywood.

But the question is whether or not we'll be using DVDs in 20 years or we'll have moved on to something else, and future collectors will wind up being frustrated for the same reasons.

I upgrade as much as possible. My only criteria are that the movie is something special that I'd care to know more about. For instance, I gladly bought the Brazil 3-disc set or Dawn of the Dead, but could do without any 2-disc Constantines or Batman Begins. I own those films, but they're not good enough to get extras for. However, if I see a Batman Begins 2-disc set for cheap (like $3 to $4) I'd get it and keep it, unless I could sell it for more.
