The late Swedish master filmmaker Ingmar Bergman rose to international stardom in the 1950s. Here, together in one box set, are four of his most cherished, unforgettable masterpieces.

since I don't actually own those Bergman titles - I might bite.

Randy Miller III 09-17-07 10:35 AM

I assume the Bergmans won't be available separately?

a 5.1 soundmix of an original mono mix - interesting.

bluetoast 09-17-07 11:23 AM

Quick Question: Is the Tilted C always in the top left corner of the box? Because sometimes it seems like it would disrupt the box art.

Has been since like last august with the six moral tales release

dman988 09-17-07 11:38 AM

Wow, that really really blows.

So much for Pierret le Fou, Salo, or a Seventh Seal SE. :(

Skoobooz 09-17-07 11:55 AM

Or that Chasing Amy 10th Anniversary edition...still December is typically a quiet month for Criterion.

obscurelabel 09-17-07 12:25 PM

So does this mean no original audio option on "Two Lane Blacktop?"

:(

gryffinmaster 09-17-07 12:32 PM

After looking it up on the Criterion site, it looks like the Bergman box is just a repackage of the already available spine #'s 11, 237, 321, and 139.

To the extent that the new edition of 'Chasing Amy' was announced at all, it was said to be coming out in 2008; it's not a literal anniversary, it was approximate.

PopcornTreeCt 09-17-07 01:58 PM

1 new title???? HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT!

Usually in December, Criterion slows down things.

The MSRP of the Bergman box set is $99.95, which would make the set about $65 at DVD Planet. That's a very good price for four Criterions, especially if you don't have any of them yet.

Jasko 09-17-07 03:28 PM

i think i'll pick up the Ingmar Bergman set.

Zen Peckinpah 09-17-07 03:33 PM

Two-Lane Blacktop is the epitome of obscure, ultra-fantastic 70's gold. Warren Oates (one of the most underrated actors ever) owns in this one, and it's a totally ideal release for Criterion. Count me in.

Kerborus 09-17-07 03:34 PM

Anyone know about the packaging on the bergman set? 4 new covers? Gatefold? Keepers?

Chucky 09-17-07 04:03 PM

Probably just a slipcase over the current DVDs, a la the Kurosawa Samurai box.

AGameWithStones 09-17-07 04:37 PM

I'm all in for Two Lane Black Top. It sounds like absolute gold. I already have all the Bergmans, so the set gets my very own personal raspberry. PBBBTH.

A little bummed that we didn't get some of the things we were promised...The Last Emperor 20th Anniversary, for example. In Criterion's favour, they never exactly promised that for sure by the end of the year.

Next year, we have plenty to look forward to.

marty888 09-17-07 05:14 PM

Since I don't have the Bergman titles yet, that box set is a no-brainer!

Agreed. Seventh Seal is such an early title, it was begging for a new edition- this would have been the perfect opportunity.

I was just about to mention this title - THE LAST EMPEROR - anyone heard any news regarding what is happening with this release ? (I recall that there were a few titles mentioned ...

nothing heard since around August 07 ??

alfonsosoriano 09-17-07 06:39 PM

I may grab the Bergman set, haven't picked any of his Criterion DVDs up yet.

asianxcore 09-17-07 06:42 PM

I'll most likely be picking up the Bergman set.

Arpeggi 09-17-07 07:13 PM

Where the fuck is Pierrot Le Fou?

The only one that I thought would be out in December would be Salo, since they always rerelease one film in December. But it looks like they went with the Bergman set, which I think was put together way to fast since I heard that they were working on a rerelease of Seventh Seal. At least were getting Two-Lane, which looks to be a great release. I bet January will be a big month for Criterion since in the past have about 4 to 5 releases that come out that month.

Arpeggi 09-17-07 08:03 PM

Yeah I know, I saw it at the Nuart in LA. But I thought it was slated for an 07 release! Dammit!

Chucky 09-17-07 08:40 PM

Maybe the POINT of the Bergman set is to clear out some stock of "Seventh Seal" in anticipation of a re-release in a year or so. See also, the Akira Kurosawa Four Samurai Classics set.

What I really don't understand is, how the heck do so many of you not own Seventh Seal yet? Why the wait?!?!

Word is that Criterion and Bertolucci are prepping a new four hour director's cut, which will debut with the new DVD.

This was one of my first Criterions and one of my early introductions to foreign films. It's easily one of my favorite Bergmans.

However, if Criterion does re-release this I may have to pass in favor of the Blu-ray release.

tofferman 09-17-07 09:36 PM

Where's The Last Emperor? Another thread mentioned it was to be a Criterion release in Fall 2007.

Also, while I don't buy as many Criterions as I use to because the more recent titles released are more obscure to me, December is a let down. With the exception of The Virgin Spring, I already have the other three Bergman titles already released.

Not a solid announcement, but this will probably be the artwork if it helps hold you over:

Think we'll be getting The Darjeeling Limited Next year?
That is Fox searchlight and the past 3 anderson films to get the Criterion treatment were Touchstone/BVHE so I'm a little worried about it....
I really dont care to much as long as we get great special features but i doubt Fox will give us the quality artwork and Booklets we get from CC

mikelowry 09-18-07 01:36 AM

That Bergman boxed set is inviting! Steep price though.
