Being a meteorology major, I can nitpick this damn movie to death (especially the ending scene, and some of the factual errors in Helen Hunt's flashback and little other technical inconsistencies).

However, it's entertaining otherwise and it's quite a bit better than other "disaster" movies such as Dante's Peak, Day After Tomorrow (which is extremely insulting to science) and Atomic Twister. Those movies are insults to science. I think I just might pick this up since I hate the snapper cases.

I'm in for the HD DVD. It'd be nice if they caught that spelling error, but I'm not holding my breathe.

I see it for $4.99 or $5.99 all the time during sales and would never consider a purchase. Snappers suck!! Plus it was pretty obvious this would be an eventual two-disc SE. That's a pretty bad spelling error on the cover -- almost makes it look like a rumor/cover forgery that was botched by some jokester who can't spell.

Count me in for this release. Brings back junior high summer blockbuster memories.

No guilty pleasure here. I am proud to say I really enjoyed this movie and will certainly look into double dipping on this title.

I read in some trivia thing that this was the "first" DVD, the one from 1997. Guess it's cool that a special edition is coming.

I love this movie - and I'm proud to say that.

I literarlly wore the tape out to the point where it snapped one day rewinding. Last year I went to buy it to show it to some college friends (bored in the dorm) and couldn't find it anywhere except as a rental at blockbuster for $4.95 - probably as much as it would cost to buy used. But I'm glad I waited - I'll be in line to pick this up release day!

Great news!

I have the first DVD and I kept meaning to buy the second release (with DTS), but never got around to doing it. I am hoping that I have somekind of HD player by the time this is released so I don't have to eventually triple dip.

I completely forgot they did a second release with DTS... which is the one I happen to own. Now I think the only way I'd upgrade on this is once I finally get a BR player.

I too continue to enjoy this flick and will often watch it when on cable. I will also be double-dipping.

Has the release date been pushed back? The original report at DVDActive allegedly confirmed January 8. Now Best Buy, Circuit City, and Amazon show May 6.

Well considering this release is in my garage with the rest of my retired vhs tapes, I think it's time for an upgrade. However, I'd Only pick it up if it gets HD format.

Whenever it comes out-- apparently in May now-- it will be getting DVD, HD DVD, and Blu-ray.

Definitely going to upgrade from an old worn-out VHS to the Blu-Ray.

With all due respect (and I will be buying this edition, too, when it comes out) why is everyone acting like this is such an exciting release? There's already a nice special edition for this release on the market. This is just one of those add-a-couple-of-new-featurettes triple-dips that usually earn mostly scorn from the DVD collecting community.

I wonder if they'll fix the spelling on the front cover?

Also, anyone know what the extras are?

It probably has gotten a new transfer as well. Warner used to do 1080i (rather than 1080p) transfers, back before around 2001. These were fine for DVD, but have aliasing issues when transferred to HD discs. After poor reception to such releases, they stated they would not be releasing any more of them, other than a couple that were already in the pipeline (over a year ago).

Given that the transfer for this dates back to 1997, this title must have had one of those 1080i masters and has been redone, and even the DVD edition should benefit.

According to the screenshot of the front cover at DVDEmpire, they already have.

DVDActive now has the special features:
  • commentary with director Jan De Bont and visual effects supervisor Stefen Fangmeier
  • "Chasing the Storm: Twister Revisited" featurette
  • History Channel documentary "Nature Tech: Tornadoes"
  • "Anatomy of a Twister" featurette
  • "HBO First Look: Making of Twister" featurette
  • Van Halen "Humans Being" music video
  • trailers
(Bold indicates new.)

Eh, good enough for me. At least nothing was dropped.

Confirmed for 5/6 (DVDActive shows 5/5, which I presume to be a misprint).
