Seems like you and me are in the minority here. I just dont see the need to spend more money to buy something that you already have in a different package. Grant it, there might be some extras in the big box that arent on the individual releases. If all the episodes are the same, then 6 out of seven discs will be the same. Just doesnt make sense to me. Does anyone know for sure that there is going to be some substantial extra content in this box, that hasn't been made available before.

argh923 08-12-07 03:42 PM

See, that's why you just do what I plan to do, and sell the sets you currently have. You'll likely get money back, instead of having to pay more. Just waiting on Amazon to list this before I do it, as I'll likely get the highest return selling the digipaks there.

Obviously, if they don't include all of the extras, that wouldn't make sense.

EDIT: And Amazon has listed the preorder for $230.99.

DVD Polizei 08-12-07 04:21 PM

If they would make this set available in HD DVD and Blu-ray, it would have been more palatable a price. Many sets I currently own I'm just holding off until the HD versions come out.

Actually...my original sets are pretty useless. When I had a roommate, she did everything short of using them for plates, so the majority of the disks don't even play. They're just sitting on my shelf, and all the boxes for them are beat up, too. So, I can't watch them anyway. I knew I was always going to have to replace them, but they were always so expensive to have to repurchase. Even when they dropped, I thought they might be planning something like this, so I held off. So, no...I'm not dropping $200+ for a box...I'm dropping $200+ to replace my current useless collection :)

mzupeman2 08-12-07 07:06 PM

I had the thin pack releases of seasons 1-3, and a short while ago picked up seasons 4-9 when Best Buy had a sale for ALL Fox series sets at 19.99 a piece. I'm quite happy with what I have and I'm sure a different release for the film will come once the second film gets a release. I won't drop a lot of money on an X-Files box.

Josh-da-man 08-12-07 11:16 PM

$330 does seem a bit high.

The complete Buffy set, with seven seasons, was $200. The Angel set is $140. So you're looking at little less than $30 a season for those.

I picked up season 1-7 for a really good price, and I'm happy with enough with those to pass on this.

Amazon has it for $230. No reason to pay $100 extra.

Buffy was $140, and Angel is currently $90.

True but this also has atleast 4 bonus DVDs, two additional seasons, and a movie added to the mix...

CertifiedTHX 08-13-07 03:11 AM

On the downside, the look of the new set doesn't do much for me. Granted, that tiny picture featured at TVShowsOnDVD probably doesn't do it justice. But I've always loved the artwork on the digipaks, and I would prefer to see them on my shelf rather than this.

buckee1 08-13-07 07:04 AM

What a great price! If I hadn't already purchased every season the first tiime around, I would get these in a flash.

Really? I paid $80-$95 per season a couple of years ago. I thought this was a steal. I had heard they re-released them in slim line cases for cheap recently. Were those cheaper than this set?

The slim re-releases have an MSRP of around $45-$50, and can regularly be found for under $30 apiece. It's a great deal, even though fans have grumbled about the lack of several bonus discs. For those who don't need all the extras and want to save shelf space, they're quite a bargain.

As for me, I own Seasons 1-8 of the original boxed sets, but I bought them used for roughly $40 each. I'll probably stick with what I have.

buckee1 08-13-07 07:20 AM

Wow. Guess it paid to wait. Personally, I love the show so much I wanted every nugget of info available so, I am glad I got the sets I did but, getting them at your price point would have made the wife happier:D

Yeah, you can't worry too much about price drops. (I got them for 10$ each at BB, but had to wait a long time for that deal)

Sparrow 08-13-07 08:40 AM

I love these complete series sets because it allows for me to get caught up on shows that have substantial buzz that I missed during their broadcast.

I already own all 9 season sets of X-Files, but I'm sure there will be new owners and fans of the show because of the availability of this set.

Too pricey for me to purchase as a gift ;) for anyone, but I'll pass on the word.

Same here, it looks great, but I can't justify buying it.

I found this on www.thedigitalbits.com :

"Fox has also revealed The X-Files: The Complete Collector's Edition, which is a 61-disc box set due on 11/6 (SRP $329.98). The set will include all 198 episodes of the series along with The X-Files: Fight the Future feature film, plus a Season One comic book, art cards, a poster for the theatrical film and an additional bonus disc of extras. It appears that each of the episode discs will include all of the bonus material that was on the original DVD releases (deleted scenes, audio commentaries and more), including the extras disc for each season (that featured TV spots, deleted scenes, DVD-ROM interactive features and often a documentary featurette on the season). The movie disc contains all the bonus features on that release as well (including the DTS audio track and director's commentary). Finally, the exclusive bonus disc gathers all of the Threads of Mythology featurettes from the more recent Mythology DVD collections, including Abduction, Colonization, Black Oil and Super Soldiers. All of it comes packaged in a custom slipcase. It's a lot of money to be sure, but if you're an X-Files fan, this thing includes everything you'd ever want. We're hoping that Fox will eventually release this series on Blu-ray as well."

Bluelitespecial 08-14-07 10:25 PM

well this looks like it will be my very first complete series on dvd purchase, SOLD. :)

Why is the bonus disc "exclusive" if you can get those features on the mythology sets? It looks like nothing unique to this release except a comic book, art cards, and a poster.

Do the episodes contain the commentaries that were unique to the mythology sets?

I'm assuming the additional bonus disc of extras is the exclusive one that they refer to later on in the description. So, the mythology featurettes are not exclusives, but possibly the rest of the extras on the additional bonus disc are.

I'm going to have to disagree with you on this one. When describing the bonus disc, all it mentions is putting the mythology featurettes together and nothing more:

DVDMagic 08-15-07 07:54 AM

I'm soooooo close to been sold right now.

I figure if I can offload the current releases I have, which are the original releases and get something from them, coupled with the first weeks release price which is usually cheaper, and who knows, hopefully will coincide with DD's sale, then it's possible I might not be out of pocket that much when all is said and done.

I was pleased to read that the releases will include all bonus features and since I didn't get any of the Mythology series, I'm assuming that the bonus content on their will hopefuully something that isn't already on the original releases.

Yeah it looks like the extras discs from the original digipak releases (dropped from the slim case reissues) will indeed be restored, as long as the disc count of 61 discs is accurate. Seasons 1-4 and 9 were 7 discs; season 5-8 were 6 discs. That's 59 discs, and FTF and the disc of featurettes make 61.

wahlers 08-15-07 08:27 AM

I doubt that they're going to put the commentaries from the Mythology sets on the episodes with the regular discs, as that would require them to repress new discs and alter menus, etc.

Oh well, so, essentially it looks like for people who own the original versions of all 9 seasons and have all 4 mythology sets, there are no new DVD-based extras in the Complete Collection.

My wallet just smiled.

critterdvd 08-15-07 12:49 PM

I only have season 1 purchased so far since I've been slow getting into the series... I'm glad I waited so long! This is definately a no-brainer purchase for me...

Matthew Ackerly 08-15-07 12:56 PM

As much as I would love to have this, i cannot justify the price after having just bought all the slim sets for 20 each. They satisfy my x-files urge enough.

TylerDurden_73 08-15-07 12:56 PM

I'm getting this set. I've been waiting years for something like this for this show. I purchased the mythology sets, but this set is a no-brainer for fans and newbs alike to get.

surfingelectrod 08-15-07 01:00 PM

Definitely getting this. The only sets I have now are the fat ones for Seasons 1 and 4. I can get rid of them fairly easily.

DJariya 08-15-07 01:09 PM

JUst saw the official press release on tvshowsondvd.com. Looks like all the audio commentaries and bonus materials/documentaries from the digi-packs are being included on this monstrosity of a set.

Sold!!

http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/newsitem.cfm?NewsID=7850

wahlers 08-15-07 04:20 PM

For reference, in case somebody finds a detailed list of commentaries included, the following commentaries were the new ones that were done from the 4 "Mythology" sets:

Commentary by director David Nutter on "Little Green Men"
Commentary by Chris Carter on "Duane Barry"
Commentary by Frank Spotnitz on "End Game"
Commentary by Bob Goodwin on "The Blessing Way"

Commentary by director R.W. Goodwin on "Talitha Cumi"
Commentary by director Rob Bowman on "Memento Mori"
Commentary by director Kim Manners on "Max"

Commentary by Chris Carter on "The Red and the Black"
Commentary by Frank Spotnitz on "One Son"
Commentary by Kim Manners on "Closure"
Commentary by Kim Manners and Robert Patrick on "Within"

Commentary by Frank Spotnitz on "Deadalive"
Commentary by director Rod Hardy on "Vienen"

I'll truly be interested to see if they include them, seeing as how the original season sets did not have commentaries on any of the same episodes as the "Mythology" sets except for "Memento Mori" where it had a commentary by Writer/Producer Frank Spotnitz.

Nice. I'm officially going to buy the shit out of this set.

shyguy1083 08-15-07 06:19 PM

The X-Files: Fight The Future is going to be the exact same disc that was released individually, yes? I'm assuming it will be the anamorphic re-release and not the original widescreen release, but the press release only lists it as 2.35:1 Widescreen... how would I go about finding this out? I don't know if I should keep the movie I have already or just go ahead and sell it in preparation... although I'll probably only get like $2 back, so it might be better to just keep it and wait and see...

Lee Harvey Oswald 08-15-07 09:01 PM

Somewhere in this thread I thought someone mentioned Blu Ray - any chance this will be re-released again in Blu Ray? I'd hate to buy it and then a better version comes out in a year or two.

And, how do the original digipacks sell for? If I were to unload 1-6 what would I get for it?

Yeah I feel the same way.

superdeluxe 08-15-07 10:21 PM

I already own the classic packaging style sets 1-9.

Its a tough non-buy, but more power to those that are buying! :)

DJariya 08-15-07 11:38 PM

I use the own the digi-packs for seasons 1-7, 9, but sold them for some extra cash when I went on vacation a few years ago. I'll be more than happy now to buy this entire set.

surfingelectrod 08-15-07 11:56 PM

I can't wait to get this. I tried to buy all of the fat sets a few months ago, but they were just too expensive. This way, I pay around 4 bucks a disc.

bookcase3 08-16-07 08:53 AM

I got the season sets for $9.99 at BB a little while back. That's complete enough for me. These complete sets are perplexing: the packaging is neat, but for those who already own the series, is it really enough to drop another couple hundred dollars? But I'm speaking as someone whose wallet actually does have a bottom.
