I'll always wonder how this film would have turned out if it had been made according to Gore Vidal's screenplay instead of Bob Guccione's crap.

No way do I want to own it.

DVD Polizei 07-08-07 11:57 PM

But it has 3 extra discs of flatulent blabber.

tofferman 07-09-07 12:12 AM

I saw this on cable TV in L.A. late night (the cable channel was called "On TV" iirc) back in the early 80's and don't remember much about it. Though it has Malcolm McDowell, as of now, it looks like a rental at best unless I'm convinced otherwise...

DVDsAreMyLIFE 07-09-07 08:09 AM

I guess I am one of the few who rather enjoyed the film. It was definitely not a great film but it was entertaining.

Giggles 07-09-07 08:32 AM

I don't like Caligula much, but anyway it's an event, a phenomenon of cinema, so that alone may be the reason to have it. Although I can't imagine buying Gone with the Wind for example :)

I don't know, if it had Scarlett recieving a "money shot" to the face, or Rhett getting fisted...
I'd buy it ;)

S it's 3 DVDs and 1 CD. The score didn't need to be on there (isn't it mostly classical pieces?), but what's on there to warrant three discs? The film with commentaries is one. They talk about some pre-release version - perhaps by itself on disc two? And the remaining extras on disc three?

that perked my interest as well, supposedly there was a longer version shown at Cannes, but I think that's just a myth.

It's too bad, but I don't think this new version talks about the controversy and history of the theatrical release of the film, or even how the film became a 'cult' film:

- New York City ticket prices were as expensive as today's prices ($10)
- Boston outright banned it's distribution to any theatre in the city.
- DC's engagement was quite possibly the longest continously running porn film; 5 years !!

It'd also be interesting to hear what all the mudslinging was between Brass and Guccione and how Brass was pretty much was infruriated about the hardcore sex scenes being added to 'his' film.

Had I not had the original version, I probably would pick this up but honestly I don't have any interest in the extras.

islandclaws 07-09-07 11:48 AM

Glad I held off on the previous release. It's something I want, but with all the titles out there it just never got into my hands. At this point it's almost worthless to buy any catalog titles since a newer release is almost a lock for anything.

I know it has been many years but isn't Caligula the greek who was the crazy one out of all the legends?

12-41 AD - yup, I'd say that was some years ago.... ;)

too bad more money wasn't available to film some of the supposed grandiose gladiator spectacles - a great excuse to show even more gratuitous blood/gore.

MrE 07-09-07 02:54 PM

Director(s) cut with new CGI and remastered SFX?

Yes and Wal-Mart will have an exclusive bonus DVD with a sing-along for the orgy scene.

rotfl Unfortunately it hadn't. Otherwise I'd be the first in line to buy it!

nateman 07-10-07 06:23 AM

Peter O'Toole= One of the all-time greatest Actors in history.

I've never seen Caligula before & I know that both Mr. O'Toole & Mr. McDowell regretted being in this movie but I'm still going to buy it because, 'Me love myself some trainwreckin' movie!'.

I love the review that Mr. Ebert gave it. Makes me want to see it even more. :)

Leon Liew 07-12-07 02:49 AM

I'll stick with the 20th Anniversary Complete,Unedited,Unrated Edition, paying and double dipping just for the 4 disc set with supposedly extras are not my forte.

Gotta be happy with what ya got.To some it might be trashy but hey after all its just a movie its mindless entertainment no need to feel uptight !

jmj713 07-12-07 08:56 AM

Well this is supposed to be restored from original newly found elements.

having read that both the Dutch and French DVD editions used superior film elements that then the R1 edition I'm all for this SE

I guess I'm the only one who's at all excited over the extras, Vidal's script, pictures - the pictorials from the original Penthouse mags are memorable and feature alternate angles/scenes sometimes not scene in the final theatrical cut. McDowell's commentary should be enlightening since he's publicily trashed the film - give an actor an opportunity to air his or her dirty laundry and I bet you're going to hear some revealing 'juicy' ;) background stories.

Is he doing commentaries at all? I heard not he only trashed the film, he abdicated it pretending this film never happened in his career. Or am I wrong?

Buttmunker 07-12-07 11:45 AM

there's nothing like watching Helen Mirren having an orgasm.

I was hoping this 4-disc set would include the unseen by me Sequel. :(

well that's what the TLA website states, unless this is just speculative or out right wrong, it's still fascinating.

nearly everyone involved with the movie was ticked off with Guccione: Vidal, Brass, McDowell...

Buttmunker 07-12-07 11:53 AM

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080491/

I meant this.

dvd-4-life 07-12-07 12:25 PM

Was Helen Miren nude and did sex scenes in this movie?

Buttmunker 07-12-07 01:23 PM

No, she wasn't nude, but she did sex scenes. With her, you couldn't see her genitals, but you saw the raw sex in her face as she rode an invisible dildo. Very hot.
