Ever Been Ashamed of a Friends Collection?

DVD Talk Platinum Edition
I posted a very long information about the difference between the mail in offer Friends "Black Wooden Box with Plexi Glass" and the re-released "Red Boxset" for all seasons of friends..
Hey.. you cant blame me.. reading the title as Friends (with no apostrophe)
Until I read this very first post...
I never thought there is discrimination in the DVD collection world

The guy had mostly VHS; in fact, of about probably 100 movies, he had maybe 10 dvd's. So looking for a movie was really tough to begin with.
Secondly, they were mostly what I consider pretty campy. Most of what I saw was average at best. We ended up watching What's Eating Gilbert Grape, and I got to change his dvd settings to 16x9. VERY satisfying, since it was showing huge black bars and looked way stretched. He just bought a new hd-dvd, and so I just had to step in; was hard to do it without sounding snobbish though.
Next time I go, I'm making some notes or taking pictures or something. Was really looking forward to making a new friend with which to compare notes.
Anyway, anyone here ever see someone's movies and just want to say, "Let's look at mine instead..."?

I had a friend, who had Glitter, Crossroads, and A walk to remember as part of her collection.
We are no longer friends. I didnt think this had to do with her taste in dvds...but now that I think about it... heh.

I really wish I could change the thread title because I think a lot of people aren't reading beyond that. He was a friend of a friend, kind of like acquaintance, I was told he had a large collection, and I was interested in seeing what he had but he had nothing that interested me.

People have different tastes in movies. Period. It is a couple days later and I still think it is quite petty to feel embarrassed or ashamed of a friends collection. And as people have proven, you can have Captain Ron next to the Godfather. Second, if you are too uninformed to know not to blindly watch Norbit when this particular friend recommends it, you are an idiot. Even moreso than the guy that owns Showgirls. How's that for embarrassing?
Have I seen questionable titles in friends collections? Sure. Do I care? No. Do I still take recommendations? Sure, because unless EVERY SINGLE MOVIE in their collection is garbage than there is still a chance they might have or recommend something good that I haven't seen.
I can't believe anyone could own that cinematic turd ID4 but I don't look down on anyone for owning it. It was a pretty popular movie at the time. That is what this thread is boiling down to. Who has superior cinematic tastes and frowning on people who like things opposed what they think everyone should like. i.e. Film Snobs.
So unless 100% of their collection is trash then it is quite stupid/petty to feel "embarrassed" by their collection.
Lastly, you do realize that on many occasions it is cheaper to buy a disc than rent it right? This leads to many blind buys and a cheap way to amass a collection of crap. It has no bearing on whether someone will watch that crap again, but for what it's worth it is there on the shelf.

People have different tastes, the OP has some titles in his collection that I would never have just like I have some that Im sure he would hate too. Do I judge you for having The adventures of Pete and Pete in your collection? No, its ur collection, you should collect what makes you happy. This thread all comes down to the saying 'whatever floats your boat".

I just care whats in my collection. I don't have the most fancy titles in my big collection & I probally have some questionable ones by some peoples standards.
The only thing is when I got to my friends house (whos my Co-Worker) his collection is so small compared to mine and I wonder how he isn't bored to death, of course he has a wife & child so he doesn't spend 9 hours a day infront of the TV as I do.
The only thing I would never be caught dead with in my collection (Which no one sees anyway cause I am a clean freak & people usually don't come over) is any season of family guy which he has. To me It's a horrible god awful show but he loves it as opposed to my favorite animation shows, The Simpsons & yes King of the hill.
I collect alot of TV ON DVD titles some of which people probally thing is garbage & some who really good classic shows.
So no I'm not Ashamed of someone elses collection because its not mine & people can like whatever the fuck they want.

I suppose 'ashamed' was the wrong word. I just went to this guys house tonight and had been told he had a fair amount of movies, and was excited to meet another person that liked film. I found when I arrived that I had little to no interest in what he owned. I don't dislike this person or think less of him, but I find it VERY hard to believe no one here takes pride in their own collection and taste and never considers another persons and compares. Why the hell does everyone have links to their collections in their sigs? And why wasn't any of this said in the "rate the member above you thread?" I guess that's not judging, that's rating. Sorry to create an awful thread, and I'll know not to try to start a conversation here again since apparently I'm terrible at it.

thomkai, judging from the response to your post, you're pretty excellent at starting a thread. As far as I'm concerned you did a beautiful job. I make sure to keep checking this thread to see what else has been posted! Whether you intended this response or not, you got 4 pages of goodness without even trying.

Just wish I could change the title from ashamed to something else since everyone still thinks I am ashamed of this persons movies. Ashamed was the wrong word.
THE POINT of this thread was the last sentence in the OP, "Anyone here ever see someone's movies and just want to say, 'Let's look at mine instead...'?"
I was only making this thread because I went to this persons house and was expecting to see some stuff in his collection we could discuss.
He's more of an acquaintance. I suppose a better way to say it might be, "Have you ever seen someones movies for the first time, and were excited to see them, only to be disappointed?"
I'm not ashamed or even embarrased, I was disappointed. It was a bad choice of wording for the thread title and everyone is fixating on it. I still like the guy and plan on hanging out with him more.
Actually he recommended Heathers which I've never seen but am sorta interested in. I've heard a few people say it was decent, and he really seemed to like it, so why not?
I didn't mean for the thread to be this, it was just something that happened to me (being disappointed in not finding a new movie friend) and I wanted to make a thread about it. I didn't make my intent clear I guess.
Yeah, a lot of my movies are simple buys because they are cheap. I'm sure he doesn't love every single movie on his shelf. I just know that within my collection of random stuff which I don't even know why I have, I also have stuff I purposefully bought because I like it, and there's some stuff that, despite the fact I can have my own opinion, is also regarded as decent by critics and other movie watchers. He did have a lot of Friday the 13th movies, which while I don't like them (or rather haven't really seen them), I know a lot of horror fans do. This is one instance where he has a personal preference that aligns with what a majority of people think. I just didn't see a lot of that, which I know most would say is just herd mentality, but it's not: there are reasons some films are considered better than others.
I understand he can like whatever he likes, and I don't have anything against it, I just was looking forward to meeting a movie buff, which I may not be as much as some, but I just couldn't find anything of interest on his shelf. I will probably rent or borrow his heathers movie, and maybe ask about the Friday the 13ths since I've heard they were good horror movies. But aside from that, it was hard to come up with something to say about the movies to him.
I guess judging me is much different than judging someone not on the internet. I really regret making this thread, it's gone in a direction I had no idea it would take, and now I feel like the people I respect on my favorite forum hate me just because it was easy.

thomkai: Heather's is a great film...or rather, it is to me.
Now I too must hate you. Not for this thread and the ashamed/disappointed line of thought, but for the regret you feel for creating the thread. I must now ignore you.

My opinion: My boss. She is tickled to death by running off to Circuit City every Tuesday to save $5 off a new release. The last three she picked up that I know of were Stomp the Yard (Full screen) on 5/15, Norbit (Full screen) on 6/5 and Ghost Rider (Full screen) on 6/12. She's also mentioned other so-called films in her collection that I just can't stand. I love her to death and do what I can to help her succeed at work, but I disrespect her taste in film and art, period. So, I just don't bring it up. Actually, I'm attempting to change her viewpoint on OAR, but seriously .. some people just can't be helped. Oh well. But hey, that's what they enjoy and I wouldn't change that aspect of it one bit.
Not that my modest collection is anything to brag about (in size or taste), but I don't know anyone else in real time that shares the same interests. There are a few friends/co-workers that I can converse and share films with, but it's limited to specific genres. This is why I hook into this forum and others. Otherwise, I could care less if someone faulted me for what I enjoy.

I have taken some crap for my own a few times. Mostly a couple of buddies of mine like to give me holy hell for owning Gilmore Girls boxsets, but I really love the character humor.
I have had to defend my liking of this show to friends of mine so many times that I have my argument memorized. Now I actually don't have them anymore, because I sold them off in anticipation of buying an evenual Complete Series Boxset. When they see that they will probably reall be unkind.
I also want to throw in my support for Heathers, I love this movie!!!! One of the Blackest of Black Comedies.

thomkai, you can e-mail a mod and have them change the thread title to what ever you want.
Also, don't be so damn sensitive. People are attacking what you wrote in the title, I don't think anyone's going to "hate" you for the post. Most people don't give a shit about other posters, much less "like" or "hate" them and just use boards to shout out their opinions on stuff they care about.

For what it's worth, I knew exactly what you were talking about before I even read your first post. We all make judgements based on other people's tastes. Is it a good thing? No, probably not, but we do it anyway, whether we choose to admit it.
I'm really happy with my collection. I put a lot of time and thought into it. But whenever people come over to look at my collection, I always hear, "I've never even heard of half of these movies." And they don't mean it as a compliment.
Bottom line: people don't care about my fancy DVD collection. And that's OK.
Because in the end, all that matters is that my taste is better than theirs.

Yeah, I've got some friends whose collections consist of every spoof and raunchy comedy out there - certainly a 180 from my tastes. I don't think embarassed is the right word for my reactions though... maybe just satisfaction in knowing I can just leave and not have to see them on the shelf everyday.
Honestly sometimes I get a bit embarassed about having as many DVD's as I do...(and I've only got 350+) None of my friends have near as much... one of my coworkers has more, but that's the only person I know.
Anyone else try and downplay their collections to their friends? I don't know, movies aren't exactly the "cool thing" to have a lot of it seems... music has less of the geek factor.

Well, I own a ton of crap, but it is my crap - at some point in my life there was some cobination of good deal and desire to see that lead to purchase. I will admit I need to probably sell about 1000 titles or so, but it just is not happening right now - too busy. I never judge another person's taste in movies. I will however ask them why they have FS copies of movies. I also will ask them why 4:3 material is stretched on an HDTV. I figure no matter what crap you are going to watch, it should be OAR.
