Nope. I'm not out to judge another person's taste in movies, especially my friends.
I enjoy the fact that we like a lot of different movies/genres, as well as share some. In fact it is because of my friends varied tastes in movies that have opened my eyes to great movies I wouldn't watch normally.

Who made you the DVDTalk Arbiter Elegantiarum? By which criteria can you demonstrate your superior cinematic judgment?
Movies are entertainment, not medicine. For example, Ikiru is one of my favorite films, and I watch it because the lead character's struggle to perform one decent act in his life before he dies speaks to me. I own the DVD because I enjoy the movie, not to show off my "refinement."

I also never claimed to have superior cinematic judgment. I do have a desire to watch what I would consider to be decent movies, and I can't imagine anyone who would willingly sit through The Matrix and even purchase a copy sharing my tastes.
You're making as many or more assumptions about me based on my desire to pick who I get movie recommendations from as you claim I make about the movie-going public. Mayhap we should both tread more carefully?
I've never seen Ikiru. Based on your description (and what I've heard in the past), maybe I should check it out. Since you've not yet said specifically whether or not you own any of the Matrix films, I can safely do that.

I really wish I could change the thread title because I think a lot of people aren't reading beyond that. He was a friend of a friend, kind of like acquaintance, I was told he had a large collection, and I was interested in seeing what he had but he had nothing that interested me. He is of course entitled to like whatever he wants, but I just really wanted to go look at my movies. Of course I'm not this crazy jerk some here seem to think I am, so I just sort of let my other friend who was with me pick something out and was silent.
Seriously I feel like I've been attacked for no reason. Point of the thread was to ask if anyone ever feels that way: you see someones movies for the first time and wonder why they have what they have. The onion article is exactly it. Random weird stuff that I don't imagine ever saying, "I want to buy Josie and the Pussycats" (but to be fair I have a GIANT poster of them on my wall, which I got from a friend at a theater. I just like how big it is :P)
At least some people seem to get what I'm asking and the weird personal attacks are becoming less frequent.
If anything, flame for the Pussycats poster! :P

It must be one f'd up collection to be embarrassing through and through! I could see looking through and spotting a film or two and thinking or even saying to the person "Holy crap...you have Showgirls?"
Not to mention it sounds like your friend has a non-collection!
If anything, there are times where I'm a bit embarrassed by a few things in my collection that are guilty pleasure films (no not the pornos!).
EDIT: Someone was judging those who enjoy Nicolas Cage enough to intentionally collect his films. I have 4 films of his (that I can think of)...is that minimum enough, or is it like 5 or more?

The guy did have one of the coolest collections of Star Trek toys and paraphernalia I've ever seen IRL. I don't know a lot of trekies, but geez, he had some cool stuff. Walls lined with toys, ala 40 year old virgin.

I always find it interesting to look at other peoples collections but I never pass judgment too harsh. I have a huge variety of taste in films. I own Kickboxer, Leprechaun, Drop Dead Fred, American Graffiti, Friday the 13th...even the Bloodfist collection with the one and only Don THE DRAGON Wilson. But then I also own films like Lost In Translation, Casino, Goodfellas, Ghost World, Y Tu Mama Tambien, Beautiful Girls and One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest.
When my DVDs are jumbled about abit, it doesnt worry me if anyone was to see Captain Ron next to The Godfather.

But I got both of them cheap... does that count for anything?

Thanks TomOpus for the encouraging words (as well as the few others with kind words). Don't know why this got to me. Hopefully I can just shrug this off before work in an hour.
Oh... and I didn't wanna mention this but I own Star Wars and The Matrix. I bought Star Wars when the tin was released and I think it's a really cool package, and The Matrix I bought from CC for $20 on hd-dvd... although I still don't have a player for it. So I suppose for some my opinions are null and void anyway :P I don't really care for the last two matrix films, but $20 for the set was outrageous.
Did just receive Almost Famous Bootleg Cut today, which I am very proud to finally add to my collection.

All in good time! In fact I just ordered American Pie: Ultimate Edition - Unrated Version (1999) today at DD. I'll get Bad Boys sooner or later, actually Bad Boys II was a blind buy that I got a good deal on.

Oh my god! A blind buy of a Martin Lawrence film!?!? Anyone who has Martin Lawrence films in their collection are CLEARLY morons/idiots/humanoids!
Oh wait...I've got Blue Streak and just picked up National Security recently...not to mention I'll also pick both Bad Boys flicks at some point. Oh yeah, and while I don't own them, I was amused by the following: Big Momma's House, Black Knight, Nothing to Lose and of course his TV show. Nevermind......

I can kinda agree with the OP. I wouldn't say ashamed is the right word. If I go over a friends house I certainly look forward to seeing their collection. I hope to see some gem that I overlooked. I've seen a few peoples' collections that made me go "huh?" but they're still friends, just not friends I talk about movies with.

If someone was really my friend, of course, I'd let it go, but frankly I'd be MORE embarrassed to go to someone's house and see a collection with nothing but foreign, avant-garde art films because I'd have to say I have more of a problem with people who can't take a break and watch an Adam Sandler movie than someone who owns all the Friday the 13th films.

Seeing as to how I just got back buying a bunch of movies with titles such as Snakes on a Train, Revenge of the Rats, and King of the Lost World, no, I don't think I'll be passing judgement on anyone soon. But it does help when you want to give out recommendations. If they have shit like Big Momma's House or The Pacifier, then you can probably be pretty safe in pointing out Norbit to them.
