Basically what he said. I'm more than happy with DVD right now considering the price difference (especially sales where I can pick up stuff I want for ~$5 a disc).

However, I do own 2 HDTVs, but I get more than enough content from HD movie and HD channels and feel no need to go out and toss $300+ on a HDDVD or PS3/Blu Ray player.

I finally got an HDTV and wasn't entirely happy with its upconversion of my standard DVDs. So I was in the market for an upconverting dvd player when the HD-A2 hit $237 at Amazon. So I jumped on it and will gladly take the bonus format and the free HD-DVDs. I'll buy select titles in HD-DVD like Hot Fuzz, 300, Blade Runner, etc. that I do not have in my collection. I don't plan on double dipping unless it is significantly worth it or I have some GCs to burn but I'll primarily rent HD-DVDs through Blockbuster Online and play my existing collection of SD DVDs.
I'll wait and see on Blu-ray but the exclusive studio support would be the only reason for me to adopt sometime down the line.

PS3 = Blu-Ray. I now own 18 Blu-Ray discs. For any one that is considering either format, I would suggest picking up Planet Earth. It is phenomenal in full 1080p.

I will be getting my first HDTV this fall, but am planning to hold off on Blu-Ray/HD-DVD until players retail for less than $150 or so, which may take a couple of years.

While I doubt it, I kind of hope HD-DVD will win. I can't stand Sony and hate the thought of the masters of mediocrity ruling the next decade of home theater media.

My first BDR purchase is Planet Earth BBC. My player will be the new Sony BDP-S300 for $500. I am not a gamer so don't care to own a PS3. I will not purchase everyday movies on BRD but keep up Standard DVD and up convert. They are getting rather cheap these days. Only huge Sci-Fi or Planet Earth type series will be for my BR. I already have a 32inch Sony Bravia HDTV set up.

Of course the joke with this thread is that is in DVD Talk. The poll would be much different in HD Talk. It seems to me that most HD/BR adopters exclusively hang out there and not in this forum anymore.

Why is that a joke? This thread only makes sense here - in the HD Forum there would be no dissenters.

Neither place is perfect, in HD there would be too few dissenters and here there are too many people who haven't made the leap.

I prefer it here though, I guess, as at least this forum gets a lot more hits and posts (and unique members posting) than HD since HD-DVD and Blu Ray are still very niche products.

Maybe someone could post a thread in HD Talk with a link to here so those that only read that forum can come vote.

If there's people who do that then they must get really bored because the HD section of the forum is not exactly bustling with activity.
I visit the regular DVD section of the forum a LOT more than I do the HD section.

Proud owner of a HD-A1 for 13 months now. I've never had a problem with the machine and I'm also a proud owner of over 230 HD DVDs. I prefer HD DVD to win because obviously I already have an investment in it but I wouldn't rule out purchasing a Blu-ray player or combo player when prices go down.

I still have a standard player for region-free dvds and it would be great if one of the high-def players could be made region-free also. I also prefer the fact that HD DVD is region free and many of my discs are imports.

I felt this was the better forum for this poll, as it tends to be more title-focused and attracts a broader group of enthusiasts. The HD Forum seems more technology-focused, and I felt the results would have been skewed there.

Everyone says that... at first. Before you know it, you'll be rebuying all the movies in your collection and won't be able to stand watching "blur-vision" DVD anymore. :)

Is that a typo? I didn't even think there were 230 HD-DVD titles. I bought the Toshiba when Amazon dropped the price on Memorial day and I own a PS3. I have doubts as to either format "winning" (I see both staying) and also whether either takes off very well.

Note: There are dual format players, but its cheaper and better to buy them separately at this point.

Not me. A couple of my friends have HD or Blu Ray, and they do look fantastic. But I'm not that picky about PQ to upgrade most of my collection.

I'll upgrade my favorites, especially the ones that are heavy on eye candy, that get watched a couple times a year or more. But for the majority of titles that get watched once a year or less, I can deal with the lesser quality as they still look much better than they did on SDTV.

Not even just the content from HD channels, but a great upconverting DVD player does the trick nicely. I've gladly purchased a large screen HDTV to give myself a large widescreen experience at home... and the quality trade-off is fine by me.

I'm itchin' to jump, but my current HDTV doesn't have HDMI, I know there's still improvement in picture quality, but I just can't get that excited yet using only component. That and the HD DVD selection sucks as of right now...

Waiting for now, but only until the missus buys me a BR player...hopefully for Dad's day, maybe for my birthday, better be no later than Christmas. I keep dropping hints, and I *think* she gets 'em. By 2008 I am a Blu-ray owner, one way or another. ;)

I hang out in both forums. Even though I have a BD player, I still buy and am interested in reading about regular DVDs, especially ones which are unlikely to see a BD/HD-DVD release for a very long time if ever (obscure films, older TV shows, etc)

Well I currently have 14 HD DVDs (plus the Matrix trilogy coming in courtesy of CC) but no HD DVD player (I watch my discs at work). I'd love to vote "Adopter of HD DVD" but with no HD DVD player in my possesion, I'd fear it'd be a lie.

picked up a PS3 for under $450, thought it was a great deal since I never had a PS2 and there are tons of games i wanted to play on it plus Blu ray

then the big sale at amazon for the A2 at 237 and the matrix box set misprice got me into HDDVD not long after

Interesting that with over 200 votes currently in the poll that the ratio of HDDVD to Blu-Ray is almost the opposite of current disc sales.

We have a PS3 for Blu-Ray. Casino Royale was the title that tipped the balance for me. We didn't have a game console, so the PS3 was a relatively low cost, low risk way for us to get into Blu-Ray. I looked at it as $300 for a next-gen game console and $300 for a Blu-Ray player. Each price point individually would be very good. I came close to getting an HDDVD player last year and even early this year, but when I looked at the studios for each format and saw what movies they produced I determined that Blu-Ray was better for us. Disney being on the Blu-Ray side is a big thing for families with kids.

With smart shopping, price matching, and some sales, I've been able to get new Blu-Ray discs for about what I was paying for new DVDs back in 2001 when we first got a player. Although 3 of the 8 titles I currently have are double-dips, I don't plan to double-dip many titles. Mostly I'll be buying new releases. I think it is prudent to have some hesistancy in buying too many because of the format war.

I voted HD-DVD but I'd go BD when a reasonably priced dual format player comes out.

been buying both, my friend bought the LG combo (been watching my purchases on his home theatre system)... I plan on waiting for the fourth quarter Samsung combo player.

I don't even have an HDTV yet, mostly because switching to HD will mean replacing nearly everything else: DVD player, DVR, cable service.

And also because I've been waiting for acceptable 42" LCDs to come down in price, which they now have.

But it's all going to happen this summer. And the choice of player will boil down to which format is best represented on Netflix, since after all those other expenses I'm not going to also pay premium prices to buy hi-def discs. As long as the player does a good job of upconverting my standard DVDs also.
