other then Dexter every one on the show is a badly written cliche'
a police captain who dislikes one of her officers for no reason and ignores all her leads despite how good they are.
constantly putting her down in front of all the other officers.
she doesnt do anything that is a smart move, how is she even the captain.
the officer is a typical as a vice cop fake hooker who wants to became a plainsclothes cop.
she eventually gets that from the cliche' DA or whatever he is, because her dad was a great cop.
of course now her captain hates her even more and has to tell the vice cop she is promoted in front of the DA type guy.
also the Da type guy is only interested in good press and his reputation.
the other cop is stereotypical parody like, bad action movie or tv show cop.
always keeping his eye on dexter and doesnt like dexter for no apparent reason.
the cursing is over done.
too much use of it that it also seems like a parody of bad cop action movies.
even the girlfriend is weak.
a guy comes and claims her ex husband owes him money for drugs he took so since the husband isnt there anymore he says give me your car.
so she just gives him the car.
Dexter was standing right there, he's cop isnt he.
he cant just flash his badge to scare him off.
i just dont get it.
the show is ok, just is poorly written.
also is the pq as bad on showtime as it is on te dvd.
looks soft and a bit blurry.

I kinda agree with the last post, it did sort of get a little too convenient towards the end.
But I disagree with the poster thinking that the writing is bad and there are too many cliche characters. It is no worse than any other show in that regard. It is no Six Feet Under or Oz, but I think the writing is pretty good.
But it is the acting of Michale C. Hall that makes it though. He's terrific.

I watched the first episode of this show off Best Buy's free Showtime DVD sampler.
I really liked it and I hope to pick it up sometime soon.

Blind bought it and am on Disc 3 now. It's a pretty cool quirky show. The OP who mentioned some of the series flaws is right on many points tho. I hate the cop whose always yelling and never smiles. And Dexter's sister is a piece of work too. She seems way too unintelligent to be in this, But in all, I'm enjoying it.

The series is great though.

Started watching the second episode last night, and the PQ is terrible, there are scenes where peoples faces are blocky and sort of shaking. Is anyone else's like this? Ill grab some screen shots later.

I agree with Trevor though, Michael C. Hall is bloody terrific. I don’t think Dexter would be nearly as good if it wasn’t for Hall. It’s nice to see an actor give a damn about his performance. It definitely shows that he puts a lot of work into his acting & doesn’t go to the ‘over-acting’ area, which some actors tend to do; I hope more people take notice of him.
I only have to watch the final episode & overall it’s a really good series & I’m looking forward for the second season DVD, I don’t have Showtime.

What's weird is that they could've easily spread the show out 3 episodes per disc and not have these compression problems, but I guess they wanted to cram those "extra" shows (which is just lame marketing) on the 4th disc.

Nevermind about the Q+A, I saw it last night, was really good.
But I suggest we email Showtime's DVD department because of the lack of that special feature which was mentioned on the case. Either they forgot to put it in, in which case a replacement is possible, or it wasn't supposed to be printed on the case.

I just watched the first DVD and I'm absolutely hooked on this show! A few things bother me though:
* He refers to his mom and dad as his "foster parents", yet they actually adopted him at a young age.
* How does the Ice Truck Killer break into Dexter's apartment without "breaking" anything? How the hell did he get in?
* Related to the previous item - if the Ice Truck Killer turns out to be Dexter, I'll stop watching. I don't like shows where they can just explain away all previous events as "imagined".

To answer your questions, keep continuing watching & you’ll have the answers explained.
The ending got pretty convenient but Michael C. Hall’s performance was absolutely incredible & it’s a real shame that he got snubbed from the Emmys. He’s my pick for the 06-07’, ‘Best Actor in a TV Drama’.

As for the adopted vs foster thing, I think many times foster parents become adopted parents, and I think people use the terms interchangebly sometimes.

Unfortunately, the emails are sent out rather quickly, so anyone subscribing to this thread already has the whole season explained to them.
Glad I watched it already, or this wouldn't be a smiley
