I work nights starting at 11pm but I always get up a couple of hours before to drink my coffee & watch a DVD for a couple of hours & I almost missed work because I go so into it. Dexter is a very addictive show.

a police captain who dislikes one of her officers for no reason and ignores all her leads despite how good they are.
constantly putting her down in front of all the other officers.
she doesnt do anything that is a smart move, how is she even the captain.

the officer is a typical as a vice cop fake hooker who wants to became a plainsclothes cop.

she eventually gets that from the cliche' DA or whatever he is, because her dad was a great cop.

of course now her captain hates her even more and has to tell the vice cop she is promoted in front of the DA type guy.

also the Da type guy is only interested in good press and his reputation.

the other cop is stereotypical parody like, bad action movie or tv show cop.
always keeping his eye on dexter and doesnt like dexter for no apparent reason.

the cursing is over done.
too much use of it that it also seems like a parody of bad cop action movies.

even the girlfriend is weak.
a guy comes and claims her ex husband owes him money for drugs he took so since the husband isnt there anymore he says give me your car.
so she just gives him the car.

Dexter was standing right there, he's cop isnt he.
he cant just flash his badge to scare him off.

i just dont get it.

the show is ok, just is poorly written.

also is the pq as bad on showtime as it is on te dvd.
looks soft and a bit blurry.
I agree with everything you said but... it DOES get better I am up to eposiode 10 and am hooked!!

I kinda agree with the last post, it did sort of get a little too convenient towards the end.

But I disagree with the poster thinking that the writing is bad and there are too many cliche characters. It is no worse than any other show in that regard. It is no Six Feet Under or Oz, but I think the writing is pretty good.

But it is the acting of Michale C. Hall that makes it though. He's terrific.

Watched the first episode, and really enjoyed it. So looks like I'll be eager to watch the rest!

I watched the first episode of this show off Best Buy's free Showtime DVD sampler.

I really liked it and I hope to pick it up sometime soon.

Blind bought it and am on Disc 3 now. It's a pretty cool quirky show. The OP who mentioned some of the series flaws is right on many points tho. I hate the cop whose always yelling and never smiles. And Dexter's sister is a piece of work too. She seems way too unintelligent to be in this, But in all, I'm enjoying it.

My review will be up soon, but one of the extras listed on the box was missing, and the majority of the extras are just promotion for Showtime (with the exception of the two quality commentaries and a short featurette on blood spatter.)

The series is great though.
I rented this at BB and I am glad to know I am not the only one who noticed one of the special features was missing.

Started watching the second episode last night, and the PQ is terrible, there are scenes where peoples faces are blocky and sort of shaking. Is anyone else's like this? Ill grab some screen shots later.

I've received emails about this, but my copy didn't display these problems (I went frame by frame to line-up screen shots, and couldn't replicate the compression issues.) I viewed it on a 42" screen, and my copy was gorgeous.

I think one thing that makes this better is the fact that I can watch them all now and not have to wait week to week, if I had to do that I think my interest in the series would have wained... because when it originally aired I watched the first episode and really disliked the "Ice Truck Killer" angle and quit watching, I rented these through BB online and watching them all together keep the intensity and makes me appreciate the series more.

Yeah, I don’t think I could watch Dexter once a week, I think this show is more, ‘eat up the episodes on DVD’ type thing. As much as this is a good show, it’s not as strong as Six Feet Under in the way of ‘stand-alone’ episodes.

I agree with Trevor though, Michael C. Hall is bloody terrific. I don’t think Dexter would be nearly as good if it wasn’t for Hall. It’s nice to see an actor give a damn about his performance. It definitely shows that he puts a lot of work into his acting & doesn’t go to the ‘over-acting’ area, which some actors tend to do; I hope more people take notice of him.

I only have to watch the final episode & overall it’s a really good series & I’m looking forward for the second season DVD, I don’t have Showtime.

Anybody know if Itunes is gonna carry the show this year (that way I don't have to wait for the DVD)? Thx.

I think he means season 2. As in, watching the show on Itunes each week.

To people who got this at Target, how is the Q+A on the extra disc?

It depends on the disc - the first two discs do look horrible with major compression problems - which is obvious, since they crammed 4 one-hour long episodes onto each disc. You can have 4 episodes of a show like 24, for example, on one disc since each episode is only 42 minutes, which makes each disc under 3 hours. Dexter's first two disc are just a few minutes shy of 4 hours each. The third disc looks better, as it only has 3 episodes, as does the 4th disc since it only has one episode, and "extras" that take up very little space.

What's weird is that they could've easily spread the show out 3 episodes per disc and not have these compression problems, but I guess they wanted to cram those "extra" shows (which is just lame marketing) on the 4th disc.

Nevermind about the Q+A, I saw it last night, was really good.

But I suggest we email Showtime's DVD department because of the lack of that special feature which was mentioned on the case. Either they forgot to put it in, in which case a replacement is possible, or it wasn't supposed to be printed on the case.

I just watched the first DVD and I'm absolutely hooked on this show! A few things bother me though:

* He refers to his mom and dad as his "foster parents", yet they actually adopted him at a young age.

* How does the Ice Truck Killer break into Dexter's apartment without "breaking" anything? How the hell did he get in?

* Related to the previous item - if the Ice Truck Killer turns out to be Dexter, I'll stop watching. I don't like shows where they can just explain away all previous events as "imagined".

You’re asking questions that will be explained throughout the next 3 discs.

To answer your questions, keep continuing watching & you’ll have the answers explained.

The ending got pretty convenient but Michael C. Hall’s performance was absolutely incredible & it’s a real shame that he got snubbed from the Emmys. He’s my pick for the 06-07’, ‘Best Actor in a TV Drama’.

I won't give anything away, just keep watching.

As for the adopted vs foster thing, I think many times foster parents become adopted parents, and I think people use the terms interchangebly sometimes.

I hope Patrick doesn't subscribe to this thread. Spoilers aren't hidden in the email notifications, and you just gave away the whole story.

Oh, I didn’t know that. Thanks for telling me & I edited in order not to ruin it for him.

No problem, a lot of people don't know about the spoiler glitch.

Unfortunately, the emails are sent out rather quickly, so anyone subscribing to this thread already has the whole season explained to them.

Glad I watched it already, or this wouldn't be a smiley
