4:3 is full frame, it cannot be called letterbox. Letterbox is widescreen.

You're wrong on both points, sorry.

16:9 = 1.78:1 (do the math). There is nothing 16:9 about the original Showgirls DVD. It's a 2.35:1 movie image letterboxed inside a non-anamorphic 4:3 video frame. See here for a more detailed explanation:

interestingly - the PATHE R2 version is presented at a ratio of 2.1:1 (widescreen enhanced.... 16x9... anamorphic ....etc . ..etc !) - even though DVDCompare.net states it as 2.35:1

(the UK '18' DVD is sadly cut )

I have the original LaserDisc version - which states 2.35:1 - but its been a long time since I've viewed it for a comparison between the ratios. The UK R2 version still looks quite good at this ratio - though I don't know why its been 'cropped' - or if this is the directors intent.

Here's the WORST version : our Aussie R4 Roadshow version ... with Dolby 2.0 sound.

The movie was shot with Panavision anamorphic lenses. Anything less than 2.35:1 means that it's cropped.

The Japanese DVD blurs out all genital nudity, so I think that takes the cake for worst edition. It does have DTS, though.

While the original was non-animorphic, eveything about it was still superior to the VIP edition; the latter was cropped rather significantly top and bottom, skin tones were rendered too red, and image wasn't quite as sharp. Check out dvdbeaver.com to compare image samples.

It seems somehow appropriate that dvdbeaver would have screenshots from Showgirls...

And the best version of this flick might be the open matte version.

The movie was shot with anamorphic lenses. There's no open matte version.

I believe it was shot on Super 35. That's what imdb.com lists and I know I've heard complaints that there are a few more "Leave it to Beaver" moments in the full screen version.

My mistake. You're right about the Super35. I was confusing it with Basic Instinct.

I think most new fox/mgm dvds are now anamorphic, I have all the new slimcase 24 sets and they all just say widescreen on it, but they are all anamorphic.

I believe it is, as my Red Dawn CE only says Widescreen as well, but is anamorphic.

This is becoming EXTREMELY LAZY by FOX and MGM of late !!!

Who's their DVD 'artist' or creator ?? Can't they get their act together and at least put on the cover ANAMORPHIC or ENHANCED or 16x9 ???

I ended up buying a relatively recent MGM release of OC AND STIGGS - only to find that it was 2.35:1 4x3 transfer - thats sucks !!!

THANK YOU! This is exactly why I came in here. I still await the disastrously hilarious TV version of this film with the bras/bikinis that seem to hand-drawn by seven-year old children.

I wish I could find some images from this to post...perhaps I'll just grab one of the pics off google and draw the bras on myself.
