The Abyss - Director's Cut ----> 6/5/07

According to the amazon.com, Fox is releasing a Director's cut of the Abyss. Will it be anamorphic? The running time? Only time will tell.

My guess is this is a price drop or something....given that they already have a cover image posted which is obviously the old DVD release...and that it says the aspect is 1.33:1.

I may be reading too much into it, but it could be just a single-disc release of the Special Edition version, without any extras that were on the original. And, maybe, 16:9.

This is just a re-issue, one of the ones with a lenticular cover. It is probably in WS though, although I doubt they have changed anything.

no plans to release it in widescreen. I think they are waiting for cameron's aproval on it.
he is busy working on a movie at the moment.

We already had that extra 28 minutes added back in .... maybe Cameron found some more footage in a tomb somewhere.

its always been called the abyss: special edition. he is actually okay with the theatre cut of the movie. the only directors cut that he prefers is aliens.

I think the extended version vastly improves on the theatrical cut. Here's hoping that this release will be anamorphic, though I'm not keeping my hopes up.

i always thought he intended the cut to be longer but the studio was what restrained him and budget.

he went back on his own a few years later to "finish" the movie the way he intended.

I agree whotony; one thing that was different was the ocean wave scenes. I think it had to do with the technical ability became available later on.

Yep, after just getting burned with the "new" Freeway release and The Abyss' DVD track record, I will do the same.

That's not true at all. Cameron has said that the theatrical cut was the best they could do at the time (though the studio made him change the ending, or somesuch, and cut down a lot of other stuff), but that the director's cut is the only one which lives up to what he intended. He had to go back a few years later when CGI had caught up with what he wanted to do.

'Aliens' is another where the studio made him cut a lot of stuff out shortly before the theatrical release, and he did it on the promise that they would eventually release his version on home video, which they did several years after the fact.

Fox always astounds me in the shear number of re-releases they make of the same damn movies. Here was a great opportunity to put out a proper transfer of the Abyss on a single disc, then all of us could pair it with the second disc of the edition we already have (with the excellent documentory). They should have taken a page out of Criterion's book on how they re-released Brazil . Makes me want to...

Is it really that hard to make the 5th or 6th DVD re-release of The Abyss anamorphic? Are they holding off for an Ultimate Edition to do this? How come no other countries have this DVD as anamorphic? There are many American movies such as Armageddon, Dead Presidents, True Lies, Strange Days, Mortal Kombat, etc. that have anamorphic versions in other countries but not in the USA. Why is The Abyss non-anamorphic in every other country as well?

I am so sick and tired of these idiot companies trying to sneek these bogus rehashed old editions of the same movie. Give me a break. I'll stick to finding my DVDs used. Release day is just not fun anymore if I have to guess if the new DVD is actually NEW!! Wow, what a concept.

Somewhat OT, but the only way I would ever buy "Aliens" again is if it had the Burke cocoon scene. Regarding this film, I bought the Special Edition, watched it, and it was enough for me.

just using the incorrect text from previous releases.
