I go downstairs to my theater and lok on my shelves

I've been collecting movies since the Beta days of 1984. At first it was just a notebook with titles written down. About 10 years later I moved to a system where each title (along with information on rating, release date, etc.) was written down on an index card and filed alphabetically. Now, at close to 4,000 movies on VHS, LD, and DVD, I'm realizing this "index card" method belongs in the stone age.

So I've been going through the painstaking process of typing each title into an Excel spreadsheet. It takes at least an hour for each letter whenever I have some spare time. I'm up to "F" and it's becoming quite tedious. (And that's not even including about 2,000 music videos and other recordings I have cataloged that do not count as movies.) :hairpull:

I feel your pain,
I use Excel as i stated before and maybe for about the first 45mins your fine at typing everything in then after that it just gets tedious and you have to stop.
On top of my DVD's i used to really love wrestling (not at all anymore) & i have about 700 VHS tapes and it was very tedious typing them all in, it took me about 2 months to finish it.
the DVD one i finished in about 2 weeks but good lord was it tedious. i only have about 100 LP's & 90 cas. tapes so that wasn't hard to type in but lord!

MS Access Database. Took awhile, but it's awesome.

To those that use Access, why?

I can understand the benefits of being able to modify your own db, but it seems like it would be alot of work. What do you use to import data?

It just looks nicer than the others I've seen. And for such a dry pastime as cataloguing my DVDs, yeah, I would definitely like nice colours on my DVD collection pages.

I recently started using DVDSpot. Does anyone know if you can print reports OTHER than exporting it to a CVR file and opening it with Excel? DVDSpot would be perfect if I could print a report with pictures.

DVDProfiler has numerous options for doing this :D

I'll add a vote for DVD Spot. I like it because it's web based and I can manage/access it from my PDA which is handy for those times your in the store and you see an awesome deal on a film but can't remember if you have it already:)

Overall I like it. Though I really wish they had a way to separate HD-DVD and Blu-Ray from standard DVD's (other than by keyword). And there have been a couple of movies that I had trouble finding. But it suits my needs.

I finally changed to DVD Profiler, I think its much better than Collectorz

Strange question about DVDProfiler - is it usable without an internet connection? The PC I would have it on is not connected to the internet and I'd like to see whether or not it would even be worth looking into. I would be able to download "update files" using another PC from time to time (assuming thats possible).
The current method of an excel file works fine, but it'd be nice to have more detailed info.
EDIT: And does it allow personal notes (this would be used to mark the status, whether it be unwatched, watched, specific episode, etc..)

I made this online collection with Movie Collector. I need to fix the email section for the loan list but I'm not to concerned with that. The search works at least.

The only thing I'm going to change is showing a certain number of movies each page instead of all of them for each letter.

You need internet connection to dl the info and img. However I think you can still use it but it might have much info as you want it. I used to use Excel it was good but it wasnt good enough.

2.0 is out for those interested. I know its popular with a few of us on here.

One thing I noticed is some of the DVD covers that were smaller before are now zoomed in. Looks better on the shelf.

Still can't figure out how to sync to my ipod though.

I have mostly mirrored collections on DVDSpot and DVDAF. I prefer DVDSpot.

I used to DVD Profiler, recently made the switch a couple months ago to DVDSpot

I'll throw another recommendation out to DVDSpot
