Bumping the thread.

The film is now on HBO, and we're still waiting. Will Universal ever release this? I mean, I now own the long OOP edition of the film, but even that transfer lacks good looks. I would settle for just a bare-bones release at this rate. Just bring it out already!!!

I thought this would be the most appropriate thread for this, but apparently this film will be re-released, with the MANT film ala the laserdisc.

I hope this is true, I haven't seen this movie in years. I have it on VHS but I'm too lazy to pull the VCR out of the closet to watch it.

Awesome... I saw this in the theater when I was much younger. Been looking for this for a long time.

I wouldn't be surprised if this films ends up being released as part of their Vault Series.

Likewise, a Blu-Ray release would be nice, but beggars can't be choosers.

Of course you saw it when you were much younger, the movie came out like 17 years ago

Funny, I saw it less than five years ago in the theater during a William Castle revival fest.

That's Warners. Matinee is a Universal film.

Why did we have to wait all these years and then get only this barebones little release?

Actually, Universal has started their own MOD Vault of DVD-R's (see separate thread). They have about 20+ titles available exclusively on Amazon so far.

As mentioned, Universal could have simply bumped this to their new DVD-R catalog abomination... so it would be unfair of me to curse them for that policy decision and not praise them when they decide to release a properly formatted, fully pressed DVD of a catalog title with superior transfer and SE content. Thank you Universal.

I have to keep stressing that the transfers on these DVD-Rs are NOT INFERIOR to transfers they would use on a pressed DVD, it's just that old films that may be in need of restoration will not get one if they go the DVD-R route. Since Matinee is from 1993, I imagine whatever library transfer Universal has on hand looks fine, and whether they went DVD-R or pressed the image would be IDENTICAL, because they're just pulling it out of the vault and slapping it on a disc. I mean, you don't think that every single catalog title Universal throws out gets digitally remastered, right? And it's not like they're going to purposefully make the image look worse on a DVD-R, and DVD-Rs are capable of dual layer. It's just that many films on pressed discs would get at least a cursory touching up, and DVD-R films don't. Probably not worth getting up in arms over for the vast majority of DVD-R titles, and absolutely not worth holding against ALL DVD-R releases.

Perhaps, but considering price points, chance of inferior quality, lack of SE content... my vote is why take a chance if you don't have to? I will always take the non-DVR route.

I guess, but if the studio is considering a DVD-R release, then they're probably not putting on any bonus features. For me, the only sticking point is the price. If they were $9.99, I'd be happy to buy lots of them (assuming there are titles I want).

I'm pretty sure I've seen Matinee on the listings for one of the high-def movie channels (I meant to DVR it but never did), so there ought to be an HD master sitting around somewhere. Not that all DVDs culled from HD masters look spectacular or anything, but a hypothetical Matinee DVD-R shouldn't look like it's lifted from a Laserdisc-era transfer.

was it presented in hidef - any ideas if it was broadcast in 5.1 I don't think the DTS laserdisc or DVD had 5.1 sound? I just remember the soundmix cut loose at the very end.

Well, I'm tickled pink! A (hopefully) better transfer, "Mant" featurette; and the trailer (to the movie? or the movie-within-the-movie?).

It's not a Criterion (hey, don't laugh, they have "Armageddon" and "The Rock" in their collection, "Matinee"'s not a stretch!), but I'LL TAKE IT!!!

The fact that Universal is releasing this in May doesn't diminish the posibility of Criterion releasing it in the future.
