If they think there is a market for it, it will be (re)released. If not, they could care less if you want a special edition ;)

Every DVD is put out to make money. Double-dip or not.

well, of course. but you do hear of the ones that are put out by the actual creator because of the love and reverance for a film. or just super-fans that have the means to mass produce.

"Cannibal Holocaust" i believe was Sage Stallone and his admiration for this and this type of films. he released it through his company Grindhouse. i think that was merely fan inspired and i don't think produced to make wads of $$.

Superman Ultimate Collection is a fan's wet dream. and of course Warner wants to make alotttt of $$, but to give us such an extensive release with all films including "Superman Returns" and with such extensive, extensive extras. yes, they put out single versions, The Chris Reeve Collection and this to cater to all markets and pocketbooks, but it is an inspired release to really cater to the uber-fan mostly.

but even Sage Stalone wants to stay in the black. Not all dvds are going to make bank, but all need to make a profit. I agree that Warner has been best when giving your moneys worth...plus putting lesser titles in with hits like the maltese falcon and so on....

most of the dvds i own are tv on dvd sets but i also have quite a few movies and i have doubled dipped maybe 5 times. with all the original star wars films, pearl harbour and the green mile.
i usually keep the original dvd releases just because they might have an extra feature that the new release doesn't.
the library is actually a good idea so i might consider that. but i usually keep them because they wouldn't be worth that much in the first place. (unless they are out of print titles.)

If they don't sell on ebay, they go to my parents.

I read the review of the OLD "Grease" DVDs (and even borrowed on of the DVDs from a friend), so I decided to wait until they came out with "Remasted" version.

I am glad I waited, the last release was great!!!!! The DVD even came in it's own Black Jacket. Waiting was one of the geatest moves I ever made.

Double Dipping is bad, if we all waited for a version that is Remasted with care, maybe they would stop the insane practice of trying to rob our money.

What's a bit more a hassle for me is buying an early(ier) release non-region 1 dvd (or one that just isn't available in R1 at all) -- for some reason none of them come to mind at the moment (my collection is in transit at the moment). They're also a lot harder to unload most of the time - even via Ebay.

I would like to check out the improved CB remix but I already have the perfect collection boxset as well as with Trigun and I can't justify rebuying or selling what I have with so many other shows I haven't even seen yet. (same again with the Farscape starburst edition vs. my current box sets). Similarly, I have the numbered AB Army of Darkness release that I'm holding onto even though I also bought the R3 HK MGM release which is probably a superior all around version.

After I sold off most of my collection a few years back -- and then started collecting again, I said my main focus was to try and get the best version of each film -- pretty anal and dumb especially since I really don't watch that many extra features most of the time (plus being in the army, I haven't even had a chance to set up/break out my nice box sets and custom cases for a LONG time). That's made me hold off on a lot of new releases as I wait to see what other region versions will be like. At the same time, there have been some films coming out really late in the US that have been available for a long time in other regions (Asian/European films mainly) that I'm probably going to end up buying again -- like The Host (already did Vengeance Trilogy twice).

Ah well. most of them aren't worth worrying about, but the ones that I do like or seriously want to check out are always the ones that bite me.

Also being in the army and moving around -- I've boxed up most of the cases a while back and store my dvds in binders -- so when something does come up and I'd like to sell the original -- the case and cover, etc. is all in storage in another state or country -- brilliant!

one last edit: that said, I loved the way Criterion re-released Brazil and saved the hassle of reselling/rebuying all 3 discs when only one was really different.

I either give them away to friends that I know will appreciate them or I use my GameStop card to sell it to them and receive an additional 10% which I turn around and use on video game purchases
