Maybe no one wants to buy the new set in order to be able to do it?

RE: Freaks and Geeks. Syndication was different back in the 70s and 80s. When KRP was on TV, home video was in its infancy. Some people back when were able to lock up the rights. If WKRP is run on the original channel, they can show it as it was broadcast. If it's syndicated, they may have to make changes. Star Trek "City on the Edge of Forever", or the ad parody with Chris Farley and Adam Sandler using Van Halen music had to be substituted when they aired it on "E!"

I'm sure that what they got took a lot of behind the scenes work, and some bands won't budge for less than top dollar. Might be 30K, might be 100K. Beatles and Led Zeppelin have rarely authorized their songs to be used in TV or movies, but it took Sean Penn, Beastie Boys or Jack Black (or if they're a fan of the show) to get the green light.

There could've been some sort of tradeoff offered by Fox.

This will keep the bootleg market thriving.

Don't discount Zep. They have sold more albums than any other artist in recording history. At the time they disbanded they held the gross, attendance, and sell out time for every venue they had played. Inflation has wiped their gross records but most of the others still stand. These guys would play a week at Madison Square Garden, all shows sold out in a couple hours. In California they would play stadiums 2-3 nights in a city, all sold out. They may still hold the record for largest paying crowd to see single act. They also have/had a record for playing before a million people in one week(do the math). A Rolling Stone concert reviewer once wrote, "Led Zeppelin could play a week in every town and there would still be people who couldn't get tickets". At one point during the '77 tour their entire catalog was on the Billboard album charts. When they played Live Aid in '85 several of their albums re-entered the charts and stores nationwide ran out of their albums. Atlantic had to do a major pessing to replenish stock. Atlantic Records has sold more Zep albums than all other artists combined. Several of their albums were declared platinum on release day. In 1979 Atlantic was on the verge of bankruptcy. They asked Zep for the In Through The Out Door masters ahead of schedule in order to get it in stores before having to declare. On release day In Through sold enough copies to pay off all of Atlantic's debt and put them in the black.
They are notorious for being very agressive in business dealings and Cadillac probably had to give them stock in the company/% of sales and a new cadillac every year for life to use Rock 'n' Roll in their commercials.
Other artist may be as expensive to license at Zep but probably none are more expensive.

I just got a bootleg copy of WKRP ... all 90 episodes on 18 DVD's for $40.

They are 22 min. syndicated cuts ... BUT they have all the ORIGINAL music ... so they must be from the '80s syndicated version of the show before the real music was hacked out.

Video quality is acceptable and audio is very good (it was TV mono afterall).

All the famous songs are there ... Ted Nugent "Queen of the Forest" ... Pink Floyd "Dogs" ... Bog Seger "Old Time Rock and Roll" ... Foreigner "Hot Blooded" ... etc.

That's the way the show as meant to be seen and HEARD.

Don't buy the "official" DVD release!

Get the "real" thing.

I don't care about the music. I've been waiting years for the rest of this. This a day one buy for me.

Crap. I was hoping Time-Life would get this and restore the music. If this music is not restored, it's not WKRP. Hope Shout was paying attention to the fallout after the first release.

So, you're going to avoid the show just because it doesn't have it's original music? You're really going to miss out on what made the show what it was?

This is the only show that I care about where the music matters.

I'm pretty sure that when Shout! gets ahold of something, you have nothing to worry about. Look what they did with Freaks and Geeks. All original music restored. I'm sure it will be the same here. WKRP has a way bigger following than that show. It'll be done right. (I wonder if I'm trying to convince you or myself!)

But the music doesn't matter. At the most, they play 2 or 3 seconds of a song, then turn it off. Though the show was set in a radio station, the show was never about music.

Sorry to disagree with you but for this show, yes it does. Entire scenes from some of the 1st season episodes were cut out because they couldn't get the rights to the music.

If they want my money then I want the show uncut with all the original music intact. Since this is Shout Factory and they know what happened the first time around (few bought season one due to the music cuts) they wouldn't even bother doing this unless they anticipate getting all the original music. Is it going to bump up the price of the set? Yeah probably. Is it worth it? To me, hell yeah!

I agree with you on most shows, but here you're wrong. As Rob Reiner just said, some scenes were specific to the music.

I'm not wrong. I watched the show for the people and the funny situations, not the music. That's what the show is about. I couldn't tell you only a few instances where a song made the scene. In fact, at the moment, the only scene in the show that I can think of where a song really made the scene is where Les is getting ready for his date and Hot Blooded is playing.

Exactly. Add to that the way the series was produced (on video tape without the benefit of multi-track audio) and you have no way of removing ancillary music other than cut a scene or use the dreaded "voice over using a voice actor" method.

Shout had announced WW and The Dixie Dance Kings and when they had trouble clearing a song they scrapped the release rather than replace the song. So I have a lot of faith in them.

You are wrong. Scenes were cut, not just snippets of music replaced.
