The Departed - 2/13/07

Just saw the street date on DavisDVD. I'm hoping for some great special features on this one (esp. a Scorsese commentary).

chris_sc77 12-10-06 07:37 PM

Hopefully WB will give us a good 2-Disk Set like they did with the Aviator dvd.
They also better not make us pay extra for a 2-disk edition like they have been doing lately....And if it is extra it better be loaded with good features unlike dissapointing disks like V for Vendetta and Batman Begins...

Geofferson 12-10-06 08:13 PM

A must-buy for me.

mdc3000 12-10-06 08:18 PM

Really hoping this hits HD day and date... the best movie of '06 so far.

EdTheRipper 12-10-06 08:20 PM

I can't wait to see this.

dcprules 12-10-06 08:38 PM

Awesome movie. Can't wait to watch it again. Also hoping for an HD or Blu Ray release.

DVDpackrat 12-10-06 09:24 PM

This and Crank are the only movies I have on my list for 2007 so far.

Exactly!

tbwmp88 12-10-06 10:20 PM

I'll probably rent it, unless it's super cheap. Some movies I don't like the first time and do the second or vice versa, so i'll give it another watch.

marty888 12-10-06 10:40 PM

Definitely an immediate buy for me - I've been fighting off the impulse to go for a repeat while it's still in theaters.

Let's revisit this comment when Rocky Balboa comes to theaters. :)

I'm sorry, was that a joke?

JediMindTricks 12-11-06 10:18 AM

i'll definitely be getting this as well!

OldBoy 12-11-06 02:21 PM

i am very much looking forward to this. this one really stayed with me. i've seen bits and pieces while waiting for other movies and it seems i can't get enough. i have a feeling this will be another i am "obsessed" with.

ReduxGuy 12-11-06 03:00 PM

Since Scorsese's Oscar is more or less a given at this stage, they need to delay the DVD release date. Then they can put on the cover "THE MOVIE THAT FINALLY GOT MARTY HIS OSCAR."

Seriously, I hope this has some great features on it.

paulringodaman 12-11-06 03:46 PM

can't wait to get this!

dpz301 12-11-06 05:51 PM

The hell it will!

If you think it is, then you obviously haven't seen Babel.

Zodiac_Speaking 12-11-06 08:11 PM

Despite if this is the best of 06 or if it will get Scorsese an Oscar, I'm defiantely picking it up. Here's hoping this will buck WB trend of charging more for a 2discer, but who's saying it'll be two discer?

I'm thinking a commentary, making of, and a few more other things, not 2disc worthy.

Anyway, can't wait.

supfool! 12-11-06 10:06 PM

This is the one DVD I've been looking forward the most, hopo they get a good 2 discer set going for it. Buying this on release day. Loved this movie, good to see the touch is not lost.

The Departed (Widescreen)

The Departed (Deluxe Edition)

Simpson Purist 12-11-06 10:42 PM

Cool, hopefully there'll be a featurette comparing this to Infernal Affairs.

I'm just hoping that WB breaks their recent streak of no commentaries on new releases with The Departed.

robsul82 12-11-06 10:44 PM

That also says a release date of the 13th of February, interesting.

chris_sc77 12-11-06 11:03 PM

Those Greedy Bastards!!!
Oh well, if they do a good job on the disks I certainly wont complain seeing how amazon will lower that $34.99 price down to around $19.99.
Hopefully the deluxe edition will have Commentaries with Scorsese , Nicholson, Screenwriter, etc.
Also the Score cd should be included to make a 3-Disk set ala Mystic River...

yellowbedwetter 12-11-06 11:18 PM

$34.99 MSRP actually isn't that bad at all, especially if its a 2 discer with a ton of extra/good content. That will probably translate to $20 or so during the first week sales in-store.

Doughboy 12-11-06 11:21 PM

I haven't seen it, but I loved Infernal Affairs and it got great reviews. I'll pick it up on HD-DVD(pleeeeeeeeeeeeease don't make it a damn combo title!).

What'd be really cool:

- multiple commentaries with Scorsese, the writer, Michael Ballhaus, Thelma Schoonmaker, Mark Wahlberg, Howard Shore, and others
- extensive documentaries on the making of the film
- a discussion on Internal Affairs
- deleted scenes
- outtakes
- trailers

robsul82 12-12-06 02:26 AM

I'd like an audience running track, if only to enjoy the gasp given at the end of the movie. Saw it 3 times in theaters and every time it happened.

grim_tales 12-12-06 02:35 AM

Great movie, not sure how it stood up to Infernal Affairs though, maybe not quite as good?. I did like it (Departed) a lot, but found the pacing to be extremely slow. However, that doesn't mean it's not worth a re-visit.

i work at a movie theater, and i would always try to poke my head in towards the end to see that reaction.

i loved this movie (although IA was better) and as for the 1 vs 2 disc...i'm a packaging/special features whore, so i'll take the 2 discer.

Man, looks like people will be upset if Eastwood swoops in and takes this one.

chris_sc77 12-12-06 03:51 PM

Eastwood doesn't have a chance this year...Unfortunately I think Frears does...
However i would bet the house on Marty this time...

I could unfortunately see it happening again, as Letters from Iwo Jima is making almost EVERY Critics Awards List and Top 10s.

However, Marty has won Director from:

Boston Film Critics Awards
National Board of Review
New York Film Critics Circle
Washington, DC Film Critics Association

So, unless Clint starts pulling in some Critics Awards between now and January, Marty's only real threat would be either Stephen Frears or Paul Greengrass.

chris_sc77 12-12-06 05:22 PM

I think The Departed will have a nice advantage with the release of the dvd around the time of the oscars...
Also WB is putting Departed back into many theatres in an expansion that will start in mid January...

Cameron 12-13-06 01:43 PM

Clint has two good movies out this year, which will work against him. Just with people being split on which is better could keep them both out of contention. I'm pulling for Marty (as I have every time he has been nominated)

jmj713 12-13-06 02:07 PM

The Departed is pretty much a lock for Best Picture. Can't see any other film challenging it, unless one will come out later this year or January.

At this stage in the game, Flags of Our Fathers is screwed. It'll be lucky if it gets a Cinematography nomination.

Nah, I see a Best Director nomination as a certainty and a win in that category as a decent probability, but I don't see it being winning Best Picture. I liked the movie, but it's not the usual Oscar bait that the Academy goes for.

Are you kidding? The pacing and editing was excellent throughout the picture. When I was done, it didn't feel at all like I'd sat through a 152 minute movie ... more like 90 minutes. And the character development Scorsese added to his version made this a far more rounded out and better acted effort than Infernal Affairs.
