I'm gonna take a little from Column A and a little from Column B.

Thin out your collection, but don't get rid of the majority of it. You've got a lot of great films, and if they're films you love, won't you be rebuying them at some point in the future? Why not save yourself the trouble (and the money you'd lose) and keep most of your DVDs? If you have something that you're not too fond of, or you simply don't think you'd watch very often, then get rid of those. But it's simply unnecessary to toss out 90% of a great collection just because you're having a baby.

And even if you do decide to get rid of most of them, definitely keep anything that will entertained your kid once he or she is old enough. (I noticed you have the Lion King, My Neighbor Totoro, Finding Nemo, etc. A lot a good stuff for the young ones.)

I'm gonna agree with the majority here. I've got a 4 year old and a lot of dvds. I'd be kicking myself in the ass if I'd have sold any of my collection. Like others have said, just because there's not much time to watch movies now doesn't mean that there'll never be enough time again.

*sniff* Ooh, a delicious worm, dangling directly in front of me. Surely one little nibble wouldn't hurt...

I have a 6 month old and still have plenty of time for watching DVD's. Im sure it will slow up when she gets a little older. I do find that I watch more TV on DVD though, as you don't have to free up as much time at once.

This is a great time to teach him now. Sit him up in your arms and keep showing him that WIDESCREEN is better that FOOLSCREEN.

I have a kid on the way in January so I've only got about a month and a half. But I agree with everyone else here about not selling your collection. With a kid you stay home much more and those movies will come in handy!

Here's the thing I've been thinking about with my first venture into parenthood. I would like all you parents opinions. Granted I won't have to worry about this for awhile but what do you do with all your NON kid friendly films. I know I have a lot I don't want them watching for awhile.

ie..American Pies, Freddy/Jason films......pretty much 3/4 my collection.

Do you keep them locked up or do you still display them out and just put the fear in the kid?

Kids today are different than when we were kids. With internet porn, there's no reason for the to try to sneak a peek with something like American Pie.

Thanks everyone for your input, I really apprecited that. My boy is 10 months now and I just decided to stick with the collection. I know i'll regret it later, if I get rid of some of these films that I love so much, especially the discountinued Disney titles.

Although, I'm curious. Have any of you moved on from dvds and into HD DVD or Blu ray yet? I really want to, but I'm scared to even bring this up in front of the wife.

Thanks.

I'll throw in my 2 cents here too...

I have a 3 year old and an 8 month old. When my wife was pregnant with the 3 year old, I had visions of us sitting on the couch with the cooing baby watching tons of movies... BOY WAS I WRONG!!!!!!!! Most of the time, I was too tired to watch anything.

And yes, I buy WAY less than I used to. But I don't plan on getting rid of anything because I still have an interest in watching the movies I own. And like many have said, once the kids get older, it's great to watch movies with them. My daughter went through a "Munsters" phase about 9 or 10 months ago. It didn't last long, but it was great!

As for getting rid of your DVDs... if your not in a huge rush, half.com is decent because unlike ebay, your stuff remains listed until it is sold or until you remove it. And you can continue to change the selling price.

My simple answer: when they get really, really cheap. Really cheap. Really, really really cheap. And when the TVs get that way as well. Really, really cheap.

...and I thought everyone here loved films!

What did people do before they collected DVDs? Did they sell off their butterfly or coin collections because of a pregnant woman?

If you love your movie memories you should keep them because you will get very very little from selling them. If you sell them cheap that may be a memory you don't like.

Even I didn't currently have the handsomest three month old boy on the planet right now, I still wouldn't buy either format. I have no interest in participating in a format war, plus I have tons of regular DVDs I've never watched. If someone came out with a really cheap dual format player, I might grab one and start getting any new titles on the hidef formats.

Do you help bring in the income for your family? Here's an idea, stop being such a pussy and buy whatever you'd like.

Um, wrong. I am married... I am also not afraid of my wife. Sure, she likes the big screen tv, and the surround sound, but she'd also be just as content with a standard 27" tv and a regular dvd player. BUT, she knows that I get off on the high-tech stuff.. she knows that I also work hard for the money that I bring into our house, and she respects my hobbies and ultimately my judgment, especially because I supported her desire to get a new fancy washing machine when the old one still worked... I supported putting in a paver patio in the backyard which she really wanted... I supported redoing the bathroom tub when she deemed it "too disgusting" to lie down to take an actual bath in, when I only take showers and couldn't care less...

I don't drink, I don't smoke, I don't collect comic books, or baseball cards... I want a nice home theatre system and I collect DVD's... that's my thing. She knows it, she respects it, and I don't need to pussy-foot around if I want to upgrade my equipment.

Well then you would also understand that it has nothing to do with being 'afraid' of your wife. It has everything to do with somebody deciding, on their own, without talking about it first, making a big purchase. If you just stroll into the house one day with a five hundred dollar Blu-Ray player without having it ever come up before, you don't think there's going to be some form of interrogation there? Usually you need to discuss these things before you just do them. My wife never says 'no' to me either, she knows what I love and what I enjoy. But it's always wise to discuss your future purchase so you can decide together when the best time might be. You seem to understand compromise since you seem to both support each other with your 'loves', from your comment before it just seemed like it was 'ah do what you want don't be afraid of her'.

Dude, that's so cool of you!! Maybe you will support her decision to get a new vacuum cleaner some day or maybe a even new stove!

Do you need extra cash for formula and diapers or something? Just keep them in the closet and when you do have time, you will always have them available to watch.

That's right, jackass, take that one line out of context.

I pity all of you that are in such tenuous relationships with your wives.

I agree. But that really isn't the issue here....... there is a huge difference between some guy going out to buy a $130k car to act as an extension of his penis and to compensate for his widening bald spot, versus a guy who feels compelled to ditch a harmless hobby he enjoys because he thinks his wife might get ANGRY at him.
