I watched the first hour last night night on HD DVD. Don't like the new music. I personally liked the blue of the original too. It's just not holding my interest. I haven't seen this film since 1999 theatrically. Twice I think. Remember liking it a lot. Paramount should have included the original too.

I'm also very disappointed by the new cut - the theatrical release is a much better movie.
I hope there will be a special edition of the theatrical version with a Mel Gibson commentary someday (maybe together with Lucy Liu and Maria Bello so Gibson doesn't fall asleep like on the Braveheart commentary).

Seems like they really dropped the ball on this release by not having both cuts of the film available in one package. Looks like Netflix now.

Yeah would have been much more satisfying to have both cuts. I haven't purchased a DVD this disapointing in a long time. I finished it last night and it barely held my interest. The theatrical is much better. I should have Netflixed this one too.

Just finished it. It is not that it was awful, it is just that I think the theatrical release is a fantastic movie and very underrated. I think Gibson knew exactly what he was doing and I am glad he did as it ended up being a much, much better movie.
On a side note, I did not realize how much I enjoyed Kristofferson's character.

Finished the new one last night, and I was mildly disappointed...but only mildly. I think I'll be keeping it, but mostly as an oddity in my collection (you know, an alternate version of one of my favorite movies).

I hate to admit it, but the studio was right on just about every change they made to it.
Although that isn't saying I didn't like this version, it's great to see what might have been. The behind the scenes clips were really good. I don't mind double dipping on this one, I'm glad I kept the theatrical version as well. Hopefully someone makes a cool cover for ir and I can put them both in a custom case.

Re: Payback : Director's Cut rumored for 2007 release
I just blind bought the blu-ray used for 5 bucks, watched it, thought it was just awful (worse than the theatrical cut), and sold it already for 9 bucks.
I don't understand the director's vision for this Director's Cut. It was just bad. Something similar but done right was Liam Neeson's TAKEN.

Payback is one of my favorite movies ever...the DC cut is just unwatchable. It absolutely infuriates me that I probably will never get the better version on blu-ray...while the awful one is available.
