wow. i wasn't planning to double-dip, but that transfer looks significantly improved. i wonder if Chinatown will be getting a hi-def release anytime soon.

The images are a bit more crisp, some specs are not gone and the color palette is different. Don't know whether it is more accurate but it is different.
Old
New
The positive,
So far, I like what I see.
The neutral,
You learn virtually nothing new from the 'all new' special features that you didn't know from the earlier release.
The negative:
Was it so hard to put some music on the DVD menu? Was Jerry Goldsmith's heirs going to get some residual you didn't want them to have?
We had a much better title page on the prior release. That and a nice changing of a blind visual which was a pretty low tech but pretty sweet way of transitioning to the film. The blind element is also significant to the film.
Now we have silence and a static screen that makes me think I bought a public release title. Is it a big deal? Nope but this film deserves better.

Wow, lame. I just picked up both of these, and the already skimpy extra features are even skimpier than advertised. The featurette "Acting Chinatown", which is listed on the box, is not on the disc.

Any word on if Paramount plans on issuing this in HD? I really want this new DVD,based on screen caps I've seen, but if there's a forthcoming HD edition I'd just as soon wait.

So, it's just a matter of time.
